Got my OLED one last week.. love it as an upgrade on my old one. It is totally worth it IF you mainly play handheld. the screen is a big step up and the battery life on an original (and aged) system is huge.

NOTE: the OLED body is wider by maybe 1.5mm - if you had accessories already you will probably need new cases / grips due to this and the modified location of vents and speakers.

    • -1

      1.5CM right?

      • +5

nope. It doesn't take much to not fit. Think about if you phone case was 1.5mm too small or big.

I could squeeze the OLED into my old Skull & co Grip case .. but it wasn't a pleasant fit and as I mentioned rear vents etc had moved and were blocked so not a smart use anyway.

      • Every cm counts

        • That's what she said

    • Where the Turkey that placed 4 X 2 orders last time ?
Some overseas folk need a old system still :)

    • If you already have an oled tv, would this still be worth it?

      • No not at all.

I have been replaying Hollow night there were some low frame rates in sections in portable mode - on my old switch in handheld.. I noticed this is not the case on the new OLED. I had the chance to test both on my OLED TV in docked mode (where the switch gets more power) and they are the same performance wise and naturally image wise, and of course battery means nothing when docked.

        • +2

Something Nintendo didn't want to market was the new memory thats on the OLED - The OLED screen itself has more video memory compared to the 8GB on board memory of the original switch and red box switch. The extra memory doesnt add performance when in docked mode, but handheld mode it does make a lot of difference - it also has a optimized battery pack that has made playing in handheld mode much more enjoyable both time and temperature (it doesnt get as hot as my old switch).

          • @Swapware: Hmm yeah reviews I read said no performance difference but it is there even in just scrolling the estore. I would say it gets hotter though and the fan is louder and almost always on it seems, though over game noise it’s it not perceivable really.

      • If you have a switch, do not upgrade just for a slightly better looking screen. LCD is still good… This only makes sense for new buyers of the console.

        • +4

I have upgraded and it is a much better screen both as an OLED and its size.
On paper it doesn’t seem like much but in person, it’s noticeable. Obviously you don’t upgrade if you’re trying to save money

          • -1

@pull the lever: Well i guess if you don't value money that much you can upgrade, just doesnt seem worth shelling out another 500 for the screen in hand held mode.

    • did they fix joycon drift??

      • +1

        Still the same design.

    • I have a Switch Lite, thinking about this so I can play on the TV. The Lite was supposed to be a temporary buy until the rumoured 4K model came out….

What's the battery life on this like? My use would likely be 50/50 portable/docked

      • The switch oled is said to be 4.5-9 hours, the switch lite is 3-7 hours for comparison.

  • +2

OLED upgrade is a joke imo. Wait for the Switch Pro and don't get fleeced by a mediocre update.

    • +11

Personally, I think the Steam Deck is what everyone should be waiting for xD

      • +4

Think you'll be waiting til 2024 for one anywhere near RRP lol

      • +3

Even announced for Aus? Last I read it's delayed well into 2022 for US…

        • +1

Nope. Index took like 2 years to turn up in Australia.

      • +1

Still holding my breath on this one. Valve has a checkered reputation as a hardware manufacturer. I don’t currently see them deliver a console-like experience with the Steam Deck. More likely that it’ll require some tinkering skills. Most importantly: will Proton (Wine) deliver? So far, there are very few Linux gamers. And the ones that exist are probably OK with some heavy handed configuration. That may not be true for the typical Steam Deck buyer. Time will tell…

Considering the price I sold my old one and some good ozbargain skills on ebay and giftcard buying, Cost me $30 for the upgrade a 24 hours of declining scam offers on Gumtree to sell the old one.

      • +1

Yeah if you can be bothered selling the old one (or giving it to a lucky family member) I don't think it's a bad upgade.

        • +3

Timing is everything I keep my gadgets in good condition and I keep boxes etc .. so was able to basically repack and sell it looking like new - helps for those wanting to gift it this time of year.

      • what were the scam offers like?

    • +1

A couple of people the OLED make sense for actually.

Have a Switch Lite which you use frequently portably and want to dock it occasionally
Have an original Switch you use portably often and want an upgraded screen
      Have a broken switch

People it doesn't make sense for?
Switch docked users who have no issues with the Switch. This is a big group of users, if you rarely use it in handheld mode, don't bother the internals aren't improved.

      • Although, apparently the OLED has converted a number of docked-only players to handheld

  • can I get this price in store anywhere, or only online shipped thru big w?

    • Nah coupon is ebay only

    • Yeah I was looking for the click and collect option, nothing

    • +1

Just price matched with local EB store. My friend told me JB will match it too. If you aren't eBay plus member the price will be $496.

      • JB price match policy says it doesn't include coupon deals so maybe luck of the drawer on who you get serving you?

        • The guy probably didn’t notice coupon was applied. He only checked bigw eBay store homepage to make sure it’s really :)

          • @NervousBurger: Tried my luck at my local JB and got fed some crap about not pricematching ebay

  • Is this a good deal? Cant tell if my mate is bullshitting but he said he got his Nintendo Switch OLED for $300 in store from JB Hi-Fi.

    • +13

He is BS ing as I'd buy em all at that price lol :)

      • +9

I asked him about it and he got all pissed off lmfao

        • +14

"Stop asking me for details about my made-up story"

          • +1

@FrugalSplack: Yeah, he said it was an instore promotion so that's why it's "not posted" and that he didn't keep the receipt. Like bro, if I knew I could get it for $300, I would be salty but seems like he's just bullshitting lol.

            • +2

@Z9Plasmahh: Probably bought the v2 thinking it was the OLED version.

    • Margin is very low on the consoles, I used to have access to distributor costs.

They are discounting the non oled version quite heavily though. JB is selling $400 for the console and you get 2 coupons, one for Mario Kart and a 3 months subscription for Nintendo Online.

  • Does bigw price match their own Ebay?

    • +1

No as Ebay normally take the hit on these 10% ones.
How do I know ? Its currently working in my store and I'm giving Ebay O contribution away from the normal monster fees .

  • Where's best for controllers right now?

    • +1

Official Nintendo controllers (either the Pro Controller or another pair of Joy Cons).

Other cheaper controllers will have compromises in some shape, way or form.

      • +1

Dispute: Got a cheap knockoff $30 Switch Pro controller off AliExpress, works really well. Been using it for a while now (more than 2 years) and it works perfectly fine.

        • +1

          Aren't most missing a combo of NFC/HD rumble/gyro?

          • +1

@sss333: That's the type of compromise I'm taking about and then some.

If they're not an issue, more power to you.

        • +1

But you can't turn on the switch with the controller

    • Amazon for $75 + Cashback rn, bought another

  • Jbhifi reps please match. My discounted teens/students/kids cards be burning holes in me pocket. Thank you.

    • Just save them for another JBHIFI deal

  • Neon is on sale as well here.

    • but white is better, everyone is going to know its the far superior OLED. the neon blends in with the inferior nintendo switches, lol.

      • +2

I prefer the neon one, the black dock looks a bit nicer imo.

        • looks like you have no choice anyways, lol.

all the white ones that everyone wants are gone, only the neon that no one wants are left.

  • Thanks OP, finally got one.

Ordered from TGG a few months ago and just kept getting delayed so I cancelled it, this will be a good upgrade for my OG one :)

  • Here is to hope that Nintendo will release the Switch Pro alongside BOTW 2 in 2022. As much as I like the appeal of an OLED screen, the Switch’ CPU and GPU are in dire need of being upgraded. Don’t need a resolution boost, just give me a consistent 720p (handheld) and 1080p (docked) resolution and a solid framerate.

    • They released OLED in 2021, pretty sure they wont release in a different model in 2022, they will do it in 2023.

    • This. I’m betting they will drop the Switch2 or Pro model with the BOTW2.

  • Just tried the coupon would not apply. "Looks like that's the wrong code. Please double-check and try again."
