Hough - “High sensitivity” & Roche - “Acceptable sensitivity”

    • +1

Just in case there are a few people who haven't read up on the utility of rapid antigen tests (RATs):

When you read the sensitivity numbers - that is, the likelihood of the test faithfully returning a positive result if you do indeed have SARS-Cov-2 - you will see percentages somewhere above 80%, with the highest sensitivity ones >95%.

This high percentage applies to people who are both (i) symptomatic, and (ii) testing during the most acute phase of their illness (typically the first 5 days of symptoms).

When studies have looked at using RATs on asymptomatic subjects, the sensitivity numbers are closer to the ballpark of ~40-60%.

That is if you do have SARS-CoV-2 and are carrying it without any symptoms, there is about a flip-of-the-coin chance that you'll detect it using a RAT.

That makes a RAT have very little use for screening purposes - you know, the classic line of "I'm visiting the grandparents and want to be sure," this does not provide that reassurance.

As far as screening is concerned, RATs only start to make sense when you are testing large cohorts, say a high-risk workplace. If you can reduce the asymptomatic carriers in that type of setting by ~50%, you are significantly reducing potential exposure.

At an individual level, RATs are only useful for providing a fairly high indication of whether or not you have SARS-CoV-2 if you have developed symptoms. In which case, you need to be getting a formal RT-PCR test and isolating anyway.

Conclusion: RATs have no role to play at a consumer level. They may have an ancillary role to play in large populations when implemented by a government or corporate body.

      • that's a bit disappointing but surely ~40-60% is still better than nothing?

        • but surely ~40-60% is still better than nothing

          To achieve what goal?

          • @muwu: when visiting grandma or going to work. kerry chant suggested using them too so it's not like i'm an idiot.

              @Savas:

when visiting grandma or going to work

So now when you head out the door with your negative RAT, you'll be armed with the knowledge that you might not be an asymptomatic carrier, rather than having no idea. Can't see how that assists in making decisions about your social engagement 🤷🏼‍♂️ It might give you false confidence, as long as you keep ignorant of the RAT's low sensitivity for asymptomatic screening.

              Kerry Chant

The NSW government's only intention is to reduce demand on RT-PCR testing, which currently cannot meet the quantity of citizens presenting. At the cost of missing cases, which has little utility now that contact tracing at these numbers isnt possible, they free up swabs for those that really need them (more likely symptomatic, and therefore higher probability of transmission) and save on the expense of pathology services.

@muwu: Say the antigen test says you’re positive, then you don’t visit grandma. Isn’t that better than visiting grandma when you are positive?

RA tests are expected to be made free in NSW from Today

    • +1

That would be awesome for the country 🙌🏻👏

    • True. I just bought some myself so with the news that it's free i feel a bit silly. But there's no knowing how the distribution of the free tests will go or how we'll obtain them.

      • Don’t feel silly.
Who knows how long it will take for freebies.

      • Yeah indeed, potentially worth having a few now until the free distribution comes, no doubt they need to get the stock and then start distributing which may take some time 🙌🏻

  • Same price at chemist warehouse, which I trust more

    • +1

🙌🏻 Always good to have options if there was any shortages or need to bulk buy for any reason 🙌🏻

    • +1

Sorry, where are these tests available at Chemist Warehouse? Online it seems only one brand, not either of the ones listed here, and no bulk price close to what is listed here.

      • I managed to buy 2 packs at $50 each with free click and collect yesterday

    • Sold out at all my local chemist warehouse and supermarkets.

      • +1

I believe a lot of places are out of stock hence posting this just incase if became useful for anyone who needs them but can’t get them 🙌🏻

  • isn't it better to buy the tests from HealthyLife which are still cheaper and higher sensitivity?

    • -1

Their Hough 5 pack is the same price but Furthr members (Which is free to signup) get 5% off also so actually cheaper. Roche is a little more pricey but has the highest sensitivity

      • why do you say Roche has highest sensitivity? above you said the other brand was better.

      • See TGA website - Hough is 'high sensitivity', Roche is 'acceptable sensitivity'

        • Correct, Roche was in a higher sensitivity bracket but the TGA is always reviewing so now currently it is ‘acceptable sensitivity’ from the article above also 🙌🏻 So TGA is always the best source of truth 🙌🏻
