  • This shingled drive has been going in sale every week this month it seems.

Also 5400 RPM. Don't see much value personally combined with SMR

good for just a capacity drive, or read only like Chia

The main Amazon URL points to the ones sold by Harris Technology for $190 with free delivery (and practically no order limit).
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07H289S7C

The $189 is sold by Computer Alliance (with what seems like a 4 unit limit).
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07H289S7C/ref=ox_sc_ac…

But Computer Alliance are also selling it on their website for $179.10 with free delivery after the 10% off code "CA10". Limit of 4.

  • all of the sata ports in my motherboard (and the ones in my ones in my pci sata expansion card) are full since i have mostly 4tb hard drives so i want to start using 8tb+ now to save space in my case, what are my options if i want to add more drives for my media collection (currently around 30tb)
i also have a couple of external hard drives (10tb and 4tb)

Buy pcie to sata ports from amazon or AliExpress. Last time i used 2 pcie x1 to 8 sata (16 in total). All drives detected in the bios and bootable.

      • wow, you had that many power cables available with your power supply?

        • Just use molex to sata, can stack as many as you wish. btw, hdd tray build in power connector that use molex as well.

          • @Ruth Hill: all of my hdd trays are full, no clue where to put any future ones lol
might just remove my smallest capacity one (2tb) and replace it with this 8tb

    • Just get a HDD dock.

  • Should I buy this one for downloading Linux Distros? Currently using 1TB WD Green.

Long term storage of data that doesn't change much that's the only time to use SMR Seagate Barracuda Compute drives. So yes it'll be ideal for Linux ISOs. They are next to useless if data changes frequently and are definitely not suited for RAID or boot drives.

      • I'd say these are fine for raid and you can get good performance from them - I'm using half a dozen of this model, software raid 5 on an omv system, maxes out gigabit network speed reading and writing.

From what I've read, you might have problems if you mix them with non SMR drives - particularly if you rebuild the array.
