Hey Folks,

I've been in the market for a secondary phone to use as a work phone.

I currently use an iPhone 11 Pro as my primary phone, and an iPhone 6 as the work phone, but the 6 is starting to get quite laggy.

Originally I was looking at refurbished iPhone 8's and XR's, but I wasn't aware that Apple Aus don't sell refurb phones, and so I starting looking at some of the Coles/Boost/Reebelo stuff..

After reading some horror stories with bad batteries and dodgy aftermarket screens etc, I gave up.

A quick internet search says Telstra, JB Hifi, Amazon and a few others all had the iPhone SE advertised for $679, so at $569 it's not too bad.

These phones have popped up earlier in the year much cheaper, but locked to the Voda network, and obviously a much better deal once you pay for the unlocking, but if there is anyone chasing a new unlocked handset for a reasonably sensible price, this may be a good option.

Now all I need is some OzBargain counselling to help me push the 'Buy it Now' button.

    Hey OP, buy it now.

    • Haha.. You first !

Funnily enough I just came back from the Genius bar. Had an iPhone 8 that's had a screen issue. It's been repaired/replaced 5 times and today they offered me an iPhone SE as an upgrade for free!

        • I'd prefer the 8 simply because the home button goes 'bzzz'

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: You prefer the 8 over the SE because of the home button? I believe they’re identical. The 6S and SE1 were the last ones with a mechanical home button.

          • @[Deactivated]: I have been looking also, found this on EBAY but not sure about the seller. New member since 4th November 2021 and 25 feedback.

              @kewlaz: @kewlaz

I’d buy that right away, but I don’t have much confidence in the seller too.

I’ve seen quite a few people who have purchased “brand new” iPhones, only to be told by Apple that the handset was activated two or three years prior !

              This is driving me nuts

        • Wow!

Was your iPhone 8 still in warranty?

          • +7

@[Deactivated]: Technically yes. iPhone 8 was purchased in Feb 2019. Throughout the 2.5 years I've had repairs done every few months. Same issue with a bright spot on the screen. In April 2021, they replaced the whole phone, but the issue came back so they decided to upgrade me to an 'equivalent' current model. Each repair is covered by 90 day service warranty or 1 year limited warranty, so everytime I had a repair, I was covered for another few months.

            • +1

@tempestswitch: That's superb service. Great to hear the Apple premium has paid for itself.

              • @[Deactivated]: Seriously hey! I was going to offer them to pay the difference and upgrade to the SE 2020 but they beat me to it!
Haven't had better customer service than Apple.

                • @tempestswitch: I'd say anecdotally as well I had similar issues with an OG Apple Watch which kept going back for repairs (both in Australia and when I was living/working in Singapore; but purchased originally from Sydney) and after a few years they just refunded me the amount I paid so I could buy a newer one (which was a bit cheaper than what we paid for OG back then and we got to keep the band/accessories).

            • @tempestswitch: Couldn't even get a 2nd replacement with a heller fan that didn't last a year!!

            • @tempestswitch: Fairly sure if they replace your iPhones the 2 years is renewed.
I have a XS Max that divided not to work after a year. The tried to repair etc but couldn’t. So they took it back to see what was wrong.
Couldn’t figure it out so they sent me a new one.
Before I left the “genius” let me know the warranty will be 2 years starting from today and when I checked it was.

Both the iPhone 8, and iPhone XR are good alternatives to this.

All 3 phones are great for people who have sensitive eyes as their screens do not flicker.

    TLDR;
Get the iPhone XR for the larger display - particularly useful if you game on your phone, older chip than the SE (A12 vs A13) ~$469
Get the iPhone SE 2020 if you're fine with the smaller display and want the best performance. ~ $569
Get the iPhone 8 if you're on a tight budget and don't mind the smaller screen, A11 chip. ~ $269

    • +1

XR for $469?? New? Where pls!

      • Yea interested to know where too.

    • No way that’s new for $469 ?

      • The prices for the XR and 8 are for used devices.

I don't think you can buy those devices new anymore.

    • +1

The price quoted are for used phones.

I would not buy a used iPhone so many years old unless I can buy it for less than 1/2 price

iPhone XR 64GB brand new was sold a few months ago for $699

    • XR? Yes.
      8? No.
Got the SE from market place for $300. Mint condition.
For that price 8 seems like a bad deal in most ways.

In my experience, these phones' battery would not last you a single day, without have to recharge before you get back home.

    • +2

      My company phone is SE2020.
I took around 100 photos, and the battery dropped from 90% to 10%.

    • +1

I use this phone for work and can confirm, have to charge at least couple of times per day.

If I charge it at the end of the week and leave it idle over the weekend it will be at 0% by Monday, so need to charge over the weekend as well even though it's not in use

  • +2

I've had one of these before, poor battery life. Would recommend Pixel 4a as a secondary budget phone. I run with a iPhone 12 mini FYI. But if I didn't live the Apple ecosystem, I'd 100% be going for a Pixel 6 as my main and 4a as a budget option.

    • What’s the 12mini battery life like?

      • +1

Bad, go for 13mini, much better.

      • Depends what you use it for. My Dad seems to love his and thinks the battery lasts a couple of days but he literally does nothing except sms/Whatsapp and take 5-10 photos per day… but if you use it like a modern smartphone user would, it probably is a charge daily phoneand ocassionally needing a top up during the day.

      • Not terrible. But usually needs a charge by 3pm but it’s quite heavy usage. Not sure on iPhone 13. Just love the form factor and the ability to operate it on handedly.

      • not much better than the 13mini, pretty average.
i found the SE models better.
there is a cheap realme 5g that has ridiculous battery life compared to these.

      • Depends on your usage, but better than the 8.
My wife doesn't have to charge hers during the day, and it often still has a bit of charge left even after running the rain app all night.
If you are taking a billion photos then it might be different. The 13 is more efficient so is better, but the 12 battery life certainly isn't bad.

      • the SE 2020 has the same battery life as an IPhone 8 or older.
the 12 mini (which I have) is about half way between an SE 2020 (my son has it) and a full size iPhone 12.
I never run out, usually down to about halfway at the end of the day but a big day can see we getting nervous down to about 30% at the end of the evening. I would also observe that after twelve months the capacity has dropped below 90% which should not happen to an iphone so quickly.

the iphone 13 mini has pretty impressive battery life for its small size. About the same life as a bigger iphone 12.

    • 4a has a 3100mah battery doesnt it? dont listen to this guy.

      • 4a has a 3100mah battery doesnt it?

And? The iPhone 13 for comparison has a 3240mAh. The 12 mini has a 2227mAh.

        • I've had a few Android phones which have significantly larger batteries than their iPhone peers (in terms of price point/tier) and I don't think any of the Androids have ever been materially better in my day to day use.

Only exception was the Asus Zenfone Max which whilst a bit lethargic in everyday use, it did live up to it's promise of lasting many days without a charge as long as you didn't expect it to do much.

          • -1

@jace88: If you are going to compare battery life of android vs iphone you should compare phones at the same price point, and look at real data/tests rather than personal anecdotes.

For example if you compare s21 vs iphone 12, roughly the same pricepoint, the s21 lasts longer in battery tests.

            https://www.tomsguide.com/news/samsung-galaxy-s21-vs-iphone-…

Although I think the s21 is still way cheaper than the iPhone 12 in Australia so maybe a more fair comparison would be the s21+ vs iphone 12.

My point is, when you compare phones of equal price, the Android is often (but not always) going to have a longer battery life.

          • +1

@jace88: Apple's lead in efficiency started with iPhone 11 and 12.
Before that, it was either equal or worse compared to Android flagships due to smaller batteries.
Phones with Mediatek chips inside last way longer than Qualcomm or Exynos. Because both Apple and Mediatek are using TSMC.
The problem is most mainstream brands cant use Mediatek for their flagships because of Qualcomm 5G modems.

            • @Mi2: Yeah, the 13 battery life is insanely good, pretty much double the battery of the older 7/8 models.

        • Android has never been a battery champ - iOS is more optimised for the hardware, and has always had MUCH smaller battery capacity and fared much better than Android phones in longevity tests - different chip, different OS.

Obviously you can build a Android phone with 6,000 mAH that'll last for ever, but it'll weigh 1/2 kilo.

RAM is another one that isn't an apples to apples comparison - Android needs 8Gb minimum, iOS survived and outperformed with much less.

          Different systems!

          • +1

            @Droz: "Android needs 8Gb minimum" Well that's highly debatable……

            • @Forfiet: I guess my comparison point is the Pixel series.

Pixel 3 had 4 GB of RAM, and was pretty depressing to use - apps closing in the background constantly.

Pixel 4 upped it to 6GB, and that was much better - I had a OnePlus 5 with 6GB of RAM and managed to get 4 years out of it.

I've now got a Poco F3 with 8GB, and things are much smoother.

The Pixels are now sitting at 8GB and 12 GB - whilst you can clearly have a phone with less, you can't really use the phone to its maximum potential like that.

      • Probably runs average. Unless you’re forking out $1000+ on a flagship don’t expect a full day battery with heavy usage on budget phones..

  • I’ve got one of these issues by work, I don’t use it much but it does last all day and it’s reliable

  • +1

Still using my iPhone 7 and just got via warranty claim a new battery. The one I purchased new went under 80% just before the 2 years I bought it.

May I ask why you don’t just dial sim in the iPhone 11? I do this in my XR and it is ok. Saves me carrying 2 phones!

    • I’d love that, but I don’t think it has that feature

      • ip11 does, with esim and nano sim

        • Can you get an eSim on a Prepaid service ?

          • @[Deactivated]:

Can you get an eSim on a Prepaid

            You can with Vodafone

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yes, with Telstra too. Been using an eSim on prepaid for years in my IPhone11.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I did mine in-store at a Telstra Shop, but I believe it can be done via the My Telstra App now, but not sure personally as I haven't used the App myself.

                • @ozzieozzieozzie: It works pretty seamlessly using the app (I did this) - just make sure you have a good wifi connection and don't lose the QR code.

Alternatively just go in store and they'll help you through the process.

    • Was going to say the same thing. I love dual sim once you work out how to use it effectively. Apple’s software helps a lot here, automatically suggesting the most appropriate number to call or text from based on your previous interactions with that number.

  • iPhone se 3 will out soon. Just said

    • +5

The iPhone SE 3 is expected to make its debut in March-April 2022, with prior leaks indicating that it will keep the price tag of the iPhone SE 2

  • Is it still possible to buy the XR new? Can’t seem to find it anywhere now

    Is it Australian stock?

What an incredibly dumb thing to say

My work issues this phone to employees. It's very basic and that's why they issue it.
It does the job as a workphone. Makes calls, emails, photos, and SMS to tell your boss you wanna chuck a sickie.

    • Haha.. You’re crack up

  • +2

I got my Dad this phone to replace his iPhone 6 which had seen better days. He loves it - especially due to the fact that it still has the home button with fingerprint sensor. He's 88 and it meets all of his basic needs. Battery life is ordinary, but not an issue for light/medium users.

    • I’m actually considering grabbing this as a work thrasher, and then passing it on to my old man who is running one of my old iPhone 6’s in a few months

  • Remember when iPhone 12 mini was only $699 though? Makes this a harder sell

    • When was this?

      • telstra store 1-2months ago

    • That’s true

    • It would if iPhone 12 mini is ever going to be $700 again.

  • Would Officeworks price beat this? or is it overseas stock ?

  • +2

If you live in a city these things go pretty cheap second hand. Picked a 128GB in great condition with the original receipt for $350.

    • 👍

  • and why this post has 30 + so quick,….

    • Maybe because its not a bad deal, or maybe because they feel sorry for me

Dual sim should be the solution. Two phones pissed me off something fierce until I switched to a dual SIM set up.

  • Is this refurbed or brand new?

    • New

  • Amazing phone. Bought one for my son's bday a month back. It's essentially an iPhone 8 with an improved camera. I tested its portrait mode and even though it is software based, found it was flawless for pictures where people were in it. The bonus is the 3D Touch/Home button. Using a 12 Pro Max, I realized how much I missed it.

    Apple iOS devices. Android devices.
    * 24/7 permissionless location tracking for you and your kids, regardless of settings
    * Apple has no option for custom firmware to eliminate said 24/7 permissionless location tracking. Some android models do.

    • I hope you were at the freedom rally protesting the QR codes and mandatory vaccinations if that’s your problem with an iPhone…

      • Hope is nice to have. So is 24/7 surveillance without a peep being uttered.

    • can't you turn off location services?

the shit thing about ios is even their weather widget won't give you the weather unless location services is on. They can't even remember your last location and just use that.

      • Apple and Google always have your location regardless of location settings. Highly recommend Rob Braxman Tech on YouTube to learn more.

For a 12 yrs old … this be good enough or iph 12 mini?

    • it's certainly good enough. Buy whichever is cheaper. My 12-year-old had to make do with a 5-year-old iPhone 5s with a dodgy battery.

    • Definitely more than enough for a 12 year old

  • don't know about others.. but that huge forehead and fat chin… yuk.

    • Huh ???

  • Will this be covered by manufacturer's warranty?

    • I believe so

  • We used to have these at work and I hated selling them. The battery is an absolute joke and I tried where possible to switch sell to an XR or 11 if possible.
Some people just saw the price and nothing else.

    • Worse than the iPhone X ?

      That wasn’t good at all

  • is this the last iphone with a home button?
