    I have the TS-453be. Great NAS….

  • Hi all, new to NAS, only one I have is an old Synology DS112 which seems to work well. Does this do emby/kodi okay? Was looking at getting a new NAS in the next 6 months, debating whether to bite the bullet early.

    • Bite early, great price for this, drop another 16 g ram in it too.

      Kodi works well with this.

      Bargain price too.

      • Thanks mate, ended up biting the bullet, pretty pumped to get it. Cheers!

    • You are new to NAS despite you having a 10-year-old NAS?

      • What's the age of nas equipment got to do with being new to nas?

        • -2

          There is correlation.

        • Lol I've got a netgear nv2+ 4 bay pretty sure it's a potato (1.6ghz single core 256mb ram literally phone is more powerful) I have to use the shield to run kodi off it. What do nas do these days? And is it hard to set up for a pleb?

      • Heya mate, I got the single bay DS112 for free from a mate, but only got it a few months back (and then had to leave my home place so didn't get to really check it out). As you say though, its a 10 year old NAS so I'm quite hoping I will feel the difference.

You are new to NAS despite you having a 10-year-old NAS?

It's possible to acquire things manufactured long ago rather than acquire them when they were released and hold onto them forever.

        • Right. I didn't think this concept was too hard to grasp lol. If i bought a 2015 model mountain bike in 2020, doesn't mean i have been riding bikes for 5 years.

  • How does this compare to the Synology DS920+ ?

I currently have ds918, ds712 and QNAP TVS671-i3(arguably best hardware out of the 3). Qnap is purely a CCTV box now because Synology provides a much better UI and software experience.
Issues I've had with QNAP but not synology:
      1. Cloud sync issues all the time
      2. Plex server has to be manually restarted from time to time
      3. Just couldn't get it to work with my APC UPS while Synology was a 1 minute straight forward setup
      4. Can't remember exactly what the issue it was, but about 3 years ago, I contacted their support to troubleshoot some NVR related issue. Long story short, the issue was never resolved.
The list goes on, I wouldn't touch another QNAP box ever again.
DS918+ now serves as my plex server, homebridge server, backup wireguard server, pi-hole server to name just a few.

I've owned QNAPs for probably around 15 years now and never had any of the problems you have listed.

From memory, I paid more for the QNAP than those 2 Synology combined, I tried really hard to justify my purchase, just didn’t work out. I did try to sell it for 30% or 40% off what I paid after 6 months but no one even asked, hence it’s my NVR now(8 free camera license).
Those issues listed above alone wouldn’t have swayed me back to Synology.
I’m sure some of them can be fixed if I’ve done more research and tinkering. But the whole reason to get one of these instead of Freenas is to have a hassle free experience, unfortunately that’s not what I got from QNAP.

      Get qnap, they are better.

for what happend to the T451 saga (YES, I have a DEAD unit with no warning until I googled it), I will not trust QNAP anymore.

    • +1

Not to mention the fact they're losing (have well and truly lost?) the battle to keep the operating system out of reach of bad actors.

Between ech0raix and Qlocker, thousands of users have lost access to their own files and/or have paid money to ransomware operators.

I wouldn't touch QNAP with the proverbial 40ft barge pole.
