    • +7

      Nice flex

    • +2

you don't want 50 wifi switches?

  • +19

    +1 for transparency.

  • Hi - Smart Guys Certified:
    to Australian Electrical Standards?
    Insane?

  • What would I need to make my current switches smart? I've got a 5 gang for my lights, one of which has a dimmable knob

    • +7

Hey, I would recommend two Shelly 2.5s (each of which is capable of controlling two on/off switches).

For the dimmer, the Shelly dimmer is not compatible with rotary dimmer knobs, so this would need to be replaced with a momentary push button with a Shelly dimmer behind it.

This will give you smart control over all 5 switches.

      Cheers,
      Tim

      • Can you please do a deal on Shelly 2.5. thanks

        • +2

          Hey, sure!

Use discount code HAPPYNEWYEAR at checkout for 10% off on the Shelly 2.5.

          Cheers,
          Tim

  • Is this the current sensing version?

    • The Shelly plus 1PM has power monitoring

      • But not controllable like the UK version? Ie. Solar relay style?

        • The 1PM does have a controllable relay, and it can monitor the power usage on that channel. But note that it is not a dry contact relay so may not be suitable for things like garage doors or sliding gates.

          Cheers,
          Tim

  • So if my front door buzzer is 2 wire 12v activated, what exactly do i need apart from Shelley +1? Is there a guide on this anywhere

    • +2

Being 12v activated, that is really all you would need to make it smart, along with some additional wires to connect up to the SW input to allow you to be notified when the doorbell is pressed

  • +2

Do you provide any pre-flashed firmware on these devices, besides the Shelly firmware? (ESP/Tasmota)

    Cheers

    • +2

Unfortunately not as this would void any warranty, but I would argue that the stock firmware can do almost anything you would want it to do, MQTT support, http commands, fully local control, scripting features etc …

  • Apart from BT, is there any other benefit over the non-plus range?

  • The pictures shown of the power sockets are from Europe or Asia I gather..?

    • Pretty sure Shelly is based in Eastern Europe, so yes. Europe sockets.

    • Hey, those photos are just for illustrative purposes. They work well in Australia and have been certified for use here. Most wall switches here have a cavity behind them in which 3-4 Shelly modules can fit.

      Cheers,
      Tim

      • So they need to be installed by a licensed electrician?

        • +3

In Australia these must be installed by a licensed electrician by law.

          • @smartguysaustralia: Thanks (maybe add that to the description and your website)
"truly retrofit and can be installed in less than 10 minutes" make it sound like these can be installed DIY

I assume that these aren't useful for multi outlet power points as you can't control each outlet individually because the power point only has one input and does the breakout internally?

            • +3

@spaceflight: You can indeed DIY and install these in under 10 min.
Why the Australian govt requires a licence to screw in a couple of wires which requires understand basic circuitry or less is beyond me. But hey atleast electricians make a good buck out of it.

              • +8

@pompompom: Getting my popcorn before all the people with high horses come to this comment.

                • +1

@meowsers: I hate high horse people.

Soon enough you will need to have someone licensed to install your condom.
You know, its got serious repercussions if you diy it and can be very expensive if you get it wrong.

Maybe they should have licensed brain cell counters. If you have a certain amount you could even do some things on your own if you are comfortable with it?

                  • +1

@bobs burgers: Exactly, meanwhile the apprentice electrician who smokes pot every day and bonded my earth and main together in the ceiling requiring 3 hours of troubleshooting at the end of the job is deemed competent.

  • do you guys have shelly 1 in stock ?

  • Does this work with Tuya?

    • +2

Hey, this doesn't work with tuya unfortunately.

You would need to look at software like home assistant to get your Shelly devices talking to your Tuya devices.

  • Does each switch work for just one device?

    • In most cases, you use one Shelly relay to make a single wall switch smart.

The exception is the Shelly 2.5 (black device) which can control two individual wall switches on the same faceplate with just the one device.

  • Any idea what’s the best way to link this up to my DALI strip lights? It was installed as part of my recent build but I’d be open to changing the driver so it can be controlled eventually by home assistant

    • Are they an LED strip? If so, you could look at the Shelly RGBW - https://smartguys.com.au/shelly-rgbw-2.html. Works great with Home Assistant.

      • Yes it's apparently a more premium LED strip driver that doesn't get affected by voltage rise issues. Will give the RGBW a try

  • Can these accept momentary and switch (??) light switches?

    • +1

Shelly can be programmed to momentary or latched mechanisms.

  • Would these be okay to put behind a power socket? Or only light switches or other hardwired devices?

    • +1

If its a single power socket, then yes, the Shelly 1PM can be used behind it. However, most GPOs in Australia have a single wire going to them even for a double power point, so Shelly is not really suitable unless the primary purpose is for power monitoring.

They are much more useful for lights, garage doors, sliding gates etc.

  • Hi smartguys. What would you suggest for light switches? Also, does the light switch need to be flipped "on" permanently for Shelly to work? (I.e. will it still override if the switch is in the off position?)

    • +1

its permanently powered behind the switch and then feeds the switch.

Info on Shelly or consult your nearest convenient electrician.

    • +1

Either the Shelly Plus or Shelly Plus 1PM (if you need power monitoring). There is also the Shelly dimmer if you require dimming. The great thing with Shelly is that the position of the wall switch doesn't matter - you will always be able to control via the wall or via the app no matter what.

      • Thank you so much. I will purchase a few then for the home 🙂

  • +2

Hey smartguys. I am building a new house which will have Clipsal iconic switches.

I want to make the lights in the living and common areas dimmable but also go all the way to off.

Does the dimmer go all the way to off?
And how many dimmers modules can you add behind the wall switch?
Assuming I need to buy the momentum mech for each switch I would like to dim?

    • The dimmer can let you go all the way off. https://smartguys.com.au/shelly-dimmer-2.html

You can probably fit about three behind a switch, but any more than that might be a stretch as you will run out of space behind the switch - best to check with your electrician on that one.

Also you should check you have over 40w load on each switch and a neutral line present to avoid any potential flicker.

These mechs should do the trick if you have iconics: https://www.mjselectricalsupplies.com.au/clipsal-iconic-bell…

      • Do we want bell press or momentary ones for dimming?

The limit of 3 behind a switch is still the problem for me, still waiting on something that will fit 6 on one plate with dimming.

  • If these are not being used on mains (240V) then they are legally DIY (licensed electrician not legally required).

eg. they can be connected to 12/24V DC power supply from a gate opener or 12V DC adapter or battery, to operate a NO/Nc dry switch (non 240V).

Edit: Someone will be along soon to argue that a registered cabler needs to install them as they "could be connected to the internet" …another exercise in personal restraint over excessive red tape.

    • The internet is dangerous afterall, the registered cabler will install an internet protection device over the device itself.

  • Hi OP. I have a 3 gang kogan smart switch installed. This works well but my dimmable lights can't be dimmed from the smart switch (just on and off at the wall and through the app). Not sure if the Shelly's could work in tandem with this setup so I could control the dimming function? Any other advice would be appreciated!
    Cheers.

    • Unfortunately the type of mechanism required to dim at the wall is a momentary push button/bell press.

The kogan switches are likely touch buttons that are just on/off so likely wouldn't work with the Dimmer.

What kind of smart bulbs do you have? If Phillips Hue or IKEA, I would recommend just purchasing their wireless dimmer switches and placing them on the wall.

  • Many have asked about dimming already. I'd like to know too please. I know the spot lights at my place are dimmable, just the switch isn't. Thanks OP.
Good product range by the way, I'm sure I'll be buying more of these along the way.

    • If the downlights are dimmable, you have a neutral line at your switches and enough load on the circuit (>40w), then you should be good to go with the Shelly Dimmers :)

If you have traditional rocker switches, the dimmer will still work but you will only get on/off control at the wall with dimming done via the app. To get dimming at the wall, you would have to change your switch to a momentary push button.

      Cheers,
      Tim

  • If put behind a light switch, do we need to make sure the light switch has neutral?

  • I’ve got 4 gang from Bunnings That are compatible with tuya, google and Alexa.
It was for $54 to control 4 lights.
How this is better from a price perspective as to control 4 lights, I would need 2 of the 2.5s devices with the existing wall plates that will cost me $70?
Plus the Bunnings deta has a touch control on the wall plate.

    • Bunnings is cloud, unless you flash, and that's becoming harder and harder, as they changed the hardware.

      • Set up home assistant on raspberry pi, get tuya local lan integration and they work instantly. I use it on Apple HomeKit with home assistant

        • Agree that the 4 gang from Bunnings is cheaper, it is a great product that serves a purpose.

The Shelly range is more for those that want to keep their current switches (e.g. some might like the aesthetics of the clipsal iconic range) but still want to make them smart. The WiFi relays can also be used to control things like garage doors, because of the dry contacts of the Shelly 1/Shelly Plus 1.

          Regards,
          Tim

    • Besides deta, any other wall switches that are approved in AU? Not too many choices that I could see.

Also, how did you get $54, I see a 3 gang one for $63.

      • They were priced for $54 just a few months ago, all of the prices have gone up since China has stopped importing stuff from Australia, this has resulted in higher shipping costs of the containers as they are retuning empty to the origin.

      • We have a zigbee range: https://smartguys.com.au/zigbee/smart-switch-sockets.html

Other than that, you could look at LIFX from JBHIFI.

        • Hi. Is your Zigbee range SAA Approved? Could not find it on the site.

  • I've been looking at these but would be good to understand for those with existing smart lights (lifx) via home assistant: it seems possible to have these toggle the lights via HA (rather than switch the power off). Is this correct? If so, is it possible to also have these such that they can still literally turn the power off to the light? i.e. power off, power on (with toggle for HA lights).

Essentially I'd look to keep everything in sync so irrespective of how the lights were controlled (voice, switch, app) that it would work as expected.

    • +1

      Yeah these are brilliant.
My wife and I used to argue cause I would tell her to use an app to turn off the lights and not the switch but when she did the switch then I couldn’t use the app.

Shelly changed all that it doesn’t matter what the switch is doing now and can be controlled by either the app or switch in any position and no more arguing with the wife.

We have LIFX, Yeelights, arlec grid, wiz and other bulbs I’ve forgotten and teamed up with Shelly it’s so much easier to configure and setup with or without the switch or apps.

Also if you use home assistant you can integrate them into scenes/HomeKit/Alexa etc with ease.

      • Thanks for the reply this is exactly what I need. I use wireless switches above the light switches themselves but people still hit the button and it's ugly. To clarify though can you actually turn the voltage off to your lights? And do you have switches that are set position (on/off) vs push switches (toggle on/off)? I have the former and wondering if I switch via HA (so the power is say off) but the switch position is "on" whether the person would use the switch twice or once?
        Thanks!

        • In some situations you need to hit the physical switch on then off again to take back control but you only need to do it once and everything resets back to normal. I haven’t had any complaints from my wife about hitting the switch twice and she is pretty picky with this and hates the app control.

    • Check out our blog post on the Shelly i3 - it could give you some ideas on how to achieve this :)

      Regards,
      Tim

  • I just bought Aeotec Z-Wave Nano Switches for all the lights in my house as I want to setup smartthings. Are these better, what's the diffrence?

    • They will achieve the exact same thing. The only difference is that Shelly uses WiFi versus aeotec which uses Z-wave.

  • Hey @smartguys I recently got two Shellys from your website. But now when I want to get it connected to my switch, the electricians here in vic are quoting $350 for each one. Are the rates really that high? Do you or anyone here have any pointers to electricians who do this for a cheaper amount in Melbourne? Thanks in advance.

    • That does seem high. Not in Melbourne, so cant advise.
