  • Price in title please :)

    • I saw Free with Prime and got so excited lol

The third party cable I've used have worked fine for a fraction of the cost.

    Sorry, don't remember the brand.

    • I got the kiwi link and it worked once then died. Definitely 5m 3rd party cables are a lot more hit and miss.

If going 3rd party then should keep it 3m or less and use a booster since use copper rather than optical.

Also most 3rd party are usb A to C so link slightly more convenient for laptop users (unless using a USB c hub)

    • +3

      I've used 3 (4m, 5m, 5m) of the Fasgear cables and they've worked flawlessly.

I've also piggybacked them onto the Cable Creations active extender without a problem.

Currently I'm running the active extender into a USB hub then a 4m Fasgear cable from the USB hub to the headset for my sim racing cockpit and never had an issue.

  • +4

Wondered why a USB-C cable was so expensive but apparently its fibre optic instead of copper.

Sold by Tian AU which just launched so be careful it’s not a fake product.

    • +4

This one is from Amazon AU direct

      • Odd. Says Ships from and sold by Tian AU for me. Maybe something screwy on mobile.

        • Yeah I got this - from Amazon.

        • "Other sellers" lists Tian AU.

        • +2

$84.69 from Tian AU (wouldn't touch that listing), $86.00 from Amazon AU.

Airlink works perfectly fine and is free. If you NEED a cable, any good quality USB3 cable is MUCH cheaper and does exactly the same thing.
Before getting my quest and being able to test the airlink this is the cable I was looking at (with an adapter) for around $21. I don't have the link now for the USBC one I had in the cart.

    • +1

That's an extender, not a cable.

Also usually can have issues charging and playing with 3rd party.

Airlink is only free if have adequate WiFi and computer connected directly to router no? If could work with laptop and headset 15m from router may buy a new router.

Otherwise for me not practical which is a shame since agreed being wireless is preferable.

      • +2

What worked for me was resurrecting an old router I could then wire all the way to line of sight with the Oculus.

Setting up a separate SSID on the 5Ghz band meant only the Quest was connecting to it, and it had line of sight then cabled to always get full speed.

        • That's awesome. My router has to be near the kitchen and I play in 3 separate areas from 8 to 15m and a wall from the router :(

Least can move my laptop but realistically will mainly use link either for movies or racing games.

Do want to play Alyx tho.

If I could get airlink would move mostly to pcvr :(

      • It says in the title that it works with Quest, and in the customer reviews they confirm that it works perfectly with the Quest headset.

    • This is the one I got, very good: ROTECK Oculus Quest 2 Link Cable 16.4ft/5M, Oculus Quest 2 Link Cable With Relay Amplifier chip and USB A to Type C Adapter,Oculus Link Cable With Signal Booster, 90 Degree Angled High Speed Data Transfer & Fast Charging Cable For Oculus Quest VR Headset https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08RNC2N9V/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt…

      • can charge the quest? speed okay?
"To all the people claiming cheap cables do the same I suggest checking the actual data transfer rate of those cables especially in comparison to the speed of your SSDs in your PCs.For reference: 1 Gbps equals 125MB/s"

    • Airlink is a technical marvel, but for me personally even after optimising the Airlink set up as much as possible, I still found there's a noticible quality difference and consistency in being wired vs Airlink…

When I really feel like getting immersed (HL:A!), then I go wired for sure!

      • +1

HL:A works flawlessly for me over 802.11ac using either Virtual Desktop or Airlink.

        • Same, it does work, but like I said the compression artifacts in some scenes gets noticable (for me).

Bumping up the encode resolution and encode bitrate (350+) in ODT, Airlink can't keep up head tracking even in the Airlink home.

Honestly, just use Airlink (upgrade router if needed) as it is really good =)

    • I’ll give it a shot. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube through claiming that for the best experience a cable is required given the higher data rate. We’ll see :)

      • Agree - Airlink works, and probably good enough most of the time, but for me being wired still gives the best visual quality and performance.

  • +1

I have one of these, used it a couple of times.. it's good but a bit annoying going back to tethered, even though this is the lighted cable. However it also charges at the slowest speed too. So depending on the game it's 2hrs (heavy) of use. Tbh, that's plenty.

Just use airlink. If you want to complain about your router, a xiaomi one solely for this would be around the same cost.

Otherwise just fix your router lol

  • +1

Can the VR work without Meta/FB, as promised, yet?

    • +1

Mine works without FB, but I have a very old account with oculus from the way back oculus rift beta days. I don't know if you can still do it that way or not. I cannot pair it to the phone app (without FB), which basically just means I can't "cast" the headset to a tv, and did have issues with the time being wrong on the headset until I figured out how to fix it with ADB.

But I can still purchase games, and use virtual desktop (which was the main reason I bought it, to play Alyx).

      • sorry im noob on this. i understand (and have bought) game in oculus store.
but the games on steam, if i buy games from there (yes i have account for collecting free pc games), meaning i have to play it on pc and use airlink or cable to connect with my quest?

so why would people buy from steam? more games? or maybe cheaper?
can i buy and refund if my laptop is not capable ?
        Intel Core i5 9300H 8GB
        NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB

        • Any game you buy on steam will have to be run using Airlink (I'm assuming airlink/cable works with steam games, I use Virtual Desktop). People buy from steam in the case that the game isn't available for the quest. You're effectively "streaming" the game to your quest.

AFAIK any game you buy from steam you can refund as long as you play it less than 2 hours. So if you buy a game and your pc can't run it, you can refund it. I think you can refund games from oculus store as well if you play them less than 2 hours?

          • @SaddenAscentAspirin: Virtual desktop that you have, it is the one at oculus store? Or they are different?

Hmm if a game is not available for quest how come steam can sell it as quest compatible and will it work with the quest hardware, control, etc?

Yes on ocu store we can, but i never buy from steam

            • @CyberMurning: Oculus store VirtualDesktop is a different app which is frequently updated. The Steam version hasn't been updated in some time I believe. Since AirLink became a thing though VD doesn't really seem necessary.

            • @CyberMurning: I use the virtual desktop from oculus store. Some people think airlink works better, but I've always just used Virtual Desktop. I didn't know steam games said "quest compatible". Virtual Desktop (or Airlink) handle translating the quest controls to non-native quest games. Some work fine, others work not so fine. Alyx for example works great, but Arizona Sunshine (steam version) doesn't work that well for me.

              • @SaddenAscentAspirin: oh so we can install the VDesk from ocu store on pc, and then communicate with games run from steam? interesting.

i see maybe i get it know so steam sells VR games, doesnt matter what headset people have it will be compatible.
for ppl with quest , we can play those games via airlink, cable, or VDesk

                • @CyberMurning: Yes, steam just sells vr games that work with most headsets. Virtual desktop or (afaik…) airlink makes them work with quest. If you buy one your PC can't run, or doesn't work with quest, then you could just refund it. If you wanted to test it out for free, there are free vr games on steam you could try, rec room, vrchat, and demos of a lot of the games.

        • You might want to check on the Oculus system requirements if your graphics card is capable.

  • if the laptop gpu is not that good, will cable improves the overall experience comparing with airlink?

    • +1

AFAIK by default link and airlink use the same transcoding settings, so probably not.

  • Got my Quest 2 for Christmas - Air Link is excellent (Even with a cheap Telstra router) and trading a cordless experience for non-noticeable improvements probably wouldn't be worth the tradeoff for me. Especially not at this price.

    • -1

      non-noticeable improvement?

Im assuming you're not playing games? I have a ~$500 D-link Taipan modem router, i tried using air link on a dedicated 5ghz band not even 5m away. The transfer speed simply isnt fast enough to do anything meaningful. For it to be non-stuttery I have to significantly drop the resolution and refresh rate.

      • +2

Playing a variety of games, zero issues at all - HL:Alyx, GNOG, Budget Cuts etc all work fine. On a 3070. I'll only get stuttering if I forget to pause NiceHash, and my GPU is still mining, but that's it…

Are you in a congested wifi area with lots of other nearby networks? I'm not, so perhaps that helps

        • no, i wouldnt say its congested. I could hardly recieve neighbour's wifi signals. The only bottle neck i could think of is that my PC isnt hard-wired to the modem, Ive got some asus PCIE wifi adapter (that is still pretty high-end), Ive got it's wifi antennas mounted externally on the desk rather than at the back of the pc case.

      • +1

Sounds like you have an issue there. I’ve got a basic UniFi wap with a few devices on the 5ghz spectrum, no issues here running Alyx and other games. Maybe try a different wap (even a cheap one)

        • Gotta disagree, I have a UniFi set up as well, and Airlink does work and the games does run fine, but pushing up the encode bitrate and encode resolution width on ODT gets a much better picture quality and Airlink just can't keep up on those settings.

I find compression artifacts particularly noticable in any of the outdoor scenes in HL:A when on Airlink

      • I've got a 2nd hand NightHawk X6 with at leaset 10 devices connected through it on the 5GHz and I have no problems with games.

        • The only bottle neck i could think of is that my PC isnt hard-wired to the modem, Ive got some asus PCIE wifi adapter (that is still pretty high-end), Ive got it's wifi antennas mounted externally on the desk rather than at the back of the pc case.

          • @AssBargain: That might be one potential issue then - I'm cabled to my router so that's one less wifi hop to deal with.

If your PC and Quest 2 are both on 5GHz then that might cause congestion that's only present when using Air Link due to the two-way bandwidth in use. Running a temporary Cat6 cable would be an easy test to see if that might help!

          • @AssBargain: Possibly. I am hardwired to the modem but for a few days I was running wireless and I still didn't notice any difference then. Definitely hardwire if you can though. Alternatively, you could buy an adapter and set your PC as an access point.

      • Similar experience with Ubiquiti Pro wireless ACs. The airlink works fine, but visual clarity is not the same. Even trying to up the rate I can visually see difference in the games I play (simracing) vs the usb cable I use. I guess the tradeoff of freedom vs wired, depends on game. I like having both depending on scenario/game to use.

  • bought this exact cable for my quest 2 for a fraction of the price, works exactly the same, no issues playing half life alyx and boneworks.

    • This is a 3m cable - they are much cheaper. If you need 5m+ you’re going with fibre (like the one posted) and there aren’t any cheap fibre cables.

  • $86 for a 5M cable, is this Monster branded cable that Harvey Norman sell?

    • Nah, $86 is way too cheap for a Monster cable!

  • Noone should pay this much for a cable. I picked up a 4M one for around $15 last year and has been working great for PC VR with my quest 2

  • just trying to connect my OQ2 to my laptop.

first using cable. test says usb 3.0 but 1.7Ghz only …. probably the port is usb 3.0 gen 1. but looks okay.
cant install google earth because antivirus, probably windows defender and firewall thing…

next, air link… terrible all jerky and blurly, massive headache. Cant stand after 2 mins.

    crap laptop thats why….

  • will any cable work?

    • I have a $5 cable from Kmart has been fine for 12 months.

      • Link?

      • is Zuckerberg taking the piss out of us with his $86 cables?

  • Saw few cables at aliexpress, 5m for aud 25 with thousands good reviews, some from Australia. Can charge, usb 3.0 test, 2.8gb speed.
The photo listing are the same as this amazon $86 lol…. amazon is not the place for buying accessories like this.
