Love a good Dutch oven 😊

    • I came from this comment.

        Ok. Why not. unzips

Oh does this come in a bag with a zip on it?

      • You better go clean up your mess then.

  • i bought at around $80 in March. It seems it hit as low as $66 in June and then $84 in Dec.

Anyway, these are pretty great. Good for use as dutch oven. Also, great for deep frying. I haven’t needed to use the lid as a pan too much (as i find it more convenient to use a dedicated cast iron pan with a longer handle and higher edges), though its been convenient to use lid as a holding plate for cooked ingredients (e.g seared meat) before combining with other ingredients in late stage cooking - end up using one pot and reduce washing.

Contrary to common tales, I’ve had no issues washing with detergent and cooking with tomatoes, wines. I deliberated whether to get this or enamelled ones. Being an ozbargainer, I took the cheaper option and have not regretted.

    • I must have missed those deals, damn! Are you sure they were Double Dutch ones?

      • yeah. same one - price history comes up on camel. those price points are probably more of an exception.

Anyway, i think it’s still probably a good buy at $95 given that it’ll last you a lifetime, and hopefully for many more generations.

I only regret not jumping into cast irons sooner - then again, it was a probably a lot pricier before amazon

        • Yes me too, better late than never :)
They are great but heavy as!

    • Lodge, themselves, even say mild detergent is fine.

Its all double Dutch to me .

  • getting close to the price of some of the enamelled dutch ovens, both are made of cast iron, both have same heat retention, the enabled can handle acid foods, the enamelled one will survive dishwasher in emergency and won’t rust if not fully dried, or not being used, the cast iron without enamel will rust if not used, and can’t even go near a dish washer …..

i bought some of the lodge items from amazon and ended up using my enabled ones more, own some creuset ($$$), some chasseur ($$) and some aldi and amazon no name ($).

    • with the enamelled cast irons, i’ve heard the cheaper ones are prone to enamel wearing off (though haven’t used them myself to know whether that is true).

for me, i figured i’d stick to these unless i was gonna go all out with le creusets / staubs. you can be very rigorous with the bare cast irons and not have to worry about ruining it.

regarding acidic foods, contrary to countless articles on the internet, i’ve not had bad experiences cooking with acids on bare cast irons (and is generally the consensus on https://www.reddit.com/r/castiron/). also, not sure how long one must go without use to get rust (i’ve not used for months at times) but even then, it can be quickly restored.

anyway, not trying to pick arguments, but thought to share different experiences =)

    • Horses for courses. I'm not throwing my Staub in a campfire any time soon and I'd be reluctant to deep fry in it.

  • Can anyone recommend a good cheap spun steel version?

No handle also has a use as it can be inverted for baking.
Ie. Preheat dutch oven. Place dough on upside down lid, score, then place the body on top.

Edit: was thinking of another model with handle on top

      • Wtf - why didn't I see this idea before.

The number of times I've burnt my hands or dropped the damn dough getting it into my red hot oval chasseur.

        Brilliant. Thank you fusion.

  • these are excellent. I would buy this, but I've already got the smaller one with the handle on top, as well as 2x lodge skillets and a griddle. Wife would kill me.

  • Didn't realise that kitchen was 0% cashback :(

  • I bought one of these a while back. take into consideration how much you need to cook. we can get about 4 portions of food out of ours give or take. If you do bigger batches then you will need something bigger.

I found the seasoning on mine to be very poor. Its flaking and showing signs of the cast iron in parts. Ive tried to sand it down and reseason but nothing seems to work. Tbh it doesnt affect the flavour but i find food sticks alot. Especially when simmering for long periods. The delivery from amazon was also very poor. It took 6 weeks to arrive and the item had been battered in transit. Amazon offered a refund but i would need to wait 6 weeks to return etc. I made the mistake not to return it.

Overall i would say its decent and it proved i would use one of these things nearly everyday. but i will certainly be buying something bigger and of better quality. I am thinking of a staub 28cm as a long term item. Moving forward i would use this to make bread. Still a decent buy for the price imo just dont expect the world.

Edit: the RRP is way off. i think i bought mine for 80-90 bucks which was down from around 150.

  • You can make your own for much cheaper

  • Bought one of these a while back and the one that arrived looked like it had been dragged behind a car - lots of scratches and really rough, unfinished areas on the edges of the lid and the main body. Returned it to Amazon and they happily sent me another one which still had the same problem, although not as bad. Is this just how these things are finished? I have a ton of other Lodge stuff (which I love!) and none of them have had this issue, only the Dutch oven.

  • These Dutch ovens are great for cooking bread in!
Excellent heat retention that helps bread get the hit of heat it needs to rise and get a nice crust.

    • It is time to revive the sourdough starter

  • Came across this brand while searching, Says Australian brand and there are some good reviews. why not this brand over lodge? almost at half price https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07BFLWNPM/.

I see some lodge ones are sold by the same Amazone store, looks like a subsidiary
