I just got 240000 points from AMEX previous deal. looks i can't get this one in any sense

    • Hi, you may be thinking about a previous Amex Explorer Card offer? (the Amex MR points on that card transfer to selected airline programs at a 2:1 rate, so are the equivalent of 120,000 frequent flyer points).

        • +1

While it depends on your travel priorities, I'd suggest transferring across to either Cathay Pacific Asia Miles or Singapore Airlines Krisflyer. Both are excellent programs that offer well-priced redemptions.

        • +3

          Membership rewards transfer to Velocity

          https://www.americanexpress.com/en-au/rewards/membership-rew…

Edit: 240k MR converts to $1200 statement credit. You’ll live haha.

    • +9

That was 240 000 amex points not qantas, around the same with the 2:1 transfer rate, but don't let your incorrect info stop you from having a good old boomer whinge!

  • Damn I still have a velocity Amex, would of loved this!!

    • +19

      would have*

  • +1

Should add spending criteria in title

    • +1

Done. I've abbreviated a few terms to fit within the character limit.

  • +1

I think the previous offer had a $200 cashback?

    • Yes, the previous offer had $200 cashback but 110,000 bonus Qantas Points.

      • I never got the $200 - it is now 5 months; should the $200 not have been automatic?

        • +2

The advice from Amex is that bonus points and statement credit can take 8-10 weeks to post to eligible card accounts after the minimum spend has been completed. If you met the minimum spend close to the 3 month mark, then this is still within the timeframe. However, if it has been more than 8-10 weeks since you met the eligible spend and the bonus points have posted separately, it might be worth raising with them direct (phone number on the back of your card, else online chat can be convenient).

  • +16

    Just a word of advice:

Using the 450 credit is a challenge when finding optimal flights for bargain hunters. Particularly when Qantas has sales - those sales won't be found via Amex Travel.
The booking system is also challenging to use. The best flights I've found have been Melbourne to Syd/Gold Coast outside of peak periods.

    • +4

The site isn't awesome to use, I'll pay that. But I've never not been able to find flights on the Amex Travel site that are near the same price as the Qantas site (+/- rounding error, always within a dollar).

  • +3

I used AMEX travel to book my overseas flight and their price was the same as the arilines - just saying. Bonus was AMEX travel did not hit me with the surcharge.

    • +1

Seconding this, price has been the same for me every time I’ve booked with Amex and technically cheaper since it dodges the surcharge.

      • I've also found that they call quick to help if flights are cancelled, or even when borders changed ruels once when I was interstate. I was impressed with how proactive they were.

    • Didn't have the same experience. Price on google flights / official airlines website was cheaper compared to the one using AMEX travel.

  • The minimum income to apply for the Qantas Amex Ultimate Card is $65,000.

    • I've added that in to the main post, along with residency requirements.

  • Does this card have international transaction fee? American Express is not very clear what what cards charge a fee for overseas purchases.

    • All Australian AMEX have international transaction fees

    • AMEX will usually use an exchange rate that's 2.8% worse than the spot/interbank rate. So consider that their fee.

  • This is nice, and I just hit the minimum income requirements after going full-time 2 payslips ago.

However I would prefer the previous 240k MR offer as I collect krisflyer not QFF.

Any chance that will come back or should I just grab this?

  • +3

Amex travel has been a disaster lately. Their computers are always "running slow today" and I was on hold for just over an hour and a half.

Then was told to book something and cancel to extend the use by date. But this contradicts the T&C's which say a cancellation will forfeit a credit.

Also my credit for a flight that was cancelled by Virgin in August has disappeared and I need to call back "next week" to work out where it is (they say their system simply says I didn't use it). But they can't explain my flight booking number as the system has "issues". Was on hold for 2 hours and couldn't get through. Suggests many others in same boat.

Final kicker was the website was down last week and couldn't use my 2021 credit at all. Amex themselves advise to contact the ombudsman with screenshots.

    • Those are rookie numbers.

I was on hold for FOUR HOURS on a single call with Qantas when I was getting bounced between Qantas and Amex for a flight I booked with travel credit and had to reschedule.

Both parties denied being able to change the flight and directed me to the other. Took me 5 calls between the two before Qantas eventually cancelled it for another travel credit.

      • how did they send you the credit? I had a similar issue and they said the credit was just "on my account" and had to call to use it. Naturally wasn't on my account. Replied to mail and have never heard back and haven't bothered chasing after it.

        • It's in my Qantas account as a travel credit.

It was a strange situation because I booked it initially through Amex, but then the Qantas website somehow allowed me to change it and then it went into Qantas' control but they told me they couldn't do anything with it because it was initially booked by Amex.

I had to get Amex to put a note on the booking that they relinquished control back to Qantas.

          • @pauly85: I was in a very similar situation.

My context was, had flights to and from Adelaide. Ended up having to cancel on the day that I had actually fly (due to COVID), although I hadn't checked in yet. Flights were paid with the travel credit, which are going to expire next month as it's almost been a year since I signed up.

After waiting for an hour or 2 on hold with Amex travel, the agent gave me back the full amount of the tickets in travel credit. The expiry date for the refunded credit was now Nov 2022. But this wasn't the normal Amex travel credit, it was more of a credit voucher that I had to spend all in a single go. If I spent any less than the voucher amount, the remaining would be forfeited. And I can still use it even if I cancel my Amex card and don't have Amex anymore, which is very handy. This credit doesn't appear in my Amex account, and only exists as an email. I need to call Amex travel to actually use it. Overall this was a pretty good outcome for me, as I'll be rebooking my Adelaide trip later anyway.

YMMV, some other comments below have said they straight up lost their credit when they cancelled due to Covid.

            • @muzzheng:

credit voucher that I had to spend all in a single go. If I spent any less than the voucher amount, the remaining would be forfeited

This is the case for the $450 qantas travel credit as well.

  • +3

Just be warned the travel credit is complete crap. must be used through Amex Travel who are atrocious and if you need to cancel flight (e.g. covid) then you lose the credit, it is not refunded to you or reusable on a seperate flight (burnt with this in December).

    • Just cancelled my application after reading this comment…

    • I found this bit of info on their website…does this no longer apply? I would have thought you would have at least received a flight voucher as the credit is just a form of payment?

      https://www.americanexpress.com/au/customer-service/coronavi…

If the trip you booked is eligible for an Airline or Supplier refund, we will refund any form of payment including any Travel Credit and/or Membership Rewards points (excluding any airline/supplier cancellation fees). Travel Credits and Membership Rewards points are usually non-refundable forms of payment but given the exceptional circumstances, these are being refunded at this time.

      • Well my flight was cancelled october, been chasing since then and have received nothing and the credit expired in december. So 3 months now and they have not honoured that statement.

sounds like I am in a similar situation to tunzafun001 above. Amex travel are a nightmare to deal with. The experience with Amex Travel has tainted the card enough for me that it has gone from a card I planned to keep to one I will ditch as my next churn so I don't have to deal with Amex Travel again.

PS: this has prompted me to yet again wait on hold to speak to someone to try and sort it out. 20 mins and waiting.
edit: just passed 1 hour on hold with amex travel.

        • Got my credit back just fine but then again this was the travel credit from Amex Explorer.

    • +1

Not true at all, because i ended up booking a trip to melb using that credit (yes, it's a rip off) , but luckily for me the Vic boarders closed, So They ended up paying me out in cash and still have the lounge pass to this very day

      • You seem to be one of the lucky ones. over 3 months now I have nothing from them. Still onhold with them again (1 hour 30 mins and counting). has cost me over well over 10 hours of onhold and frustrating calls with them as they pass the blame to their system or tell me to call a different area.

        • +1

I had no trouble in contacting them, but agree for them handling the issue took over 4 weeks, Honestly didn't expect nothing back, But luckily Qantas policy lived up to their deal of free cancellation and a friendly reminder, So they paid me out in cash for the trouble.

Hope they do the same to you!!

          • +2

@ODoG: finally just got through. back on hold now as they try to sort something out with Qantas for me. Maybe this 5th call will actually bring a result, fingers crossed.

          • +3

@ODoG: And a win, they are going to process a refund for the entire amount. now really love this deal as if it hadn't come up I might not have tried the frustrating onhold waiting again.

            • @gromit: Good to hear : )

            • @gromit: Refund as another credit? This is what i was offered. I waited 16 weeks (they said to wait 15 weeks), but now they have no history of ever offering me a refunded credit.

You can get cash if you cancel the card in the 15 weeks. This is probably your best bet.

              • @tunzafun001: I was told refund as cash, initially they said as credit and I would have to call to book, I then explained how long their on hold queues are and how many times I have already endured it and they changed it to refund as in cash but may take 6 weeks. I guess time will tell.

      • I got my cancelled flight back as cash in my bank but it took them months and a complaint before they promptly refunded. To be fair, they did warn me it would take months for a refund.

    • And cancellations need to be done with a person (via chat or phone).

I had to cancel a flight on the 28th, which is the first non-public holiday. Waited for ages, got nowhere and just decided to let the booking go as it was completely on the flight credit.

      • yep, don't forget even though they say chat is available it has actually been offline for several months with for amex travel (or at least everytime I have looked in the past 4 months it is not available, only card services chat is available).

    • -5

All clearly listed in the Ts & Cs but don't let that stop you from having your boomer whinge!

      • +1

typical millennial idiot, never checks their facts and makes a heap of uninformed assumptions. I didn't cancel, THEY did, under those conditions I would have been eligible for a refund EVEN without covid happening. With covid they had extra condition guarantees for the flight vouchers/refunds. The problem was not them agreeing that I was due a refund or credit, it was actually getting them to actually do it.

    • I had booked flights with the travel credit as well that I later had to cancel. Couldn't get through to amex travel as they were closed over the holidays, and qantas can't cancel directly if you booked through amex travel.

However the qantas app does let you change your flights, but you can't cancel outright. Once you do that, you are able to call qantas and get the booking cancelled and refunded to a flight credit (including the amex $450 credit). Once you change the flight through Qantas, they are able to cancel the flights (though you have to call as the online system still registers it as a 3rd party booking).

      Hope this helps someone!

      • Interesting, from memory I tried that but it had the change button greyed out much to my frustration, possibly because they had already moved my flights to something unusable to me so only way was to call :-(

  • +11

That is a great deal. I always like to do the math on the business class round the world ticket, since that's the best value for points. I'm pretty sure my 18 month wait is up before this deal ends, so this might be my next card.

38% of a business round the world trip (318k points).

If you bought a round the world ticket in cash, retail fares usually start from $3,000 in Economy, $11,000 in Business and upwards of $20,000 in First.

$4,381 of profit after meeting spend requirements
+ $4,281 38% of RTW business flight value
    + $100 cashback extra bonus
+ $450 travel credit extra bonus
    - $450 annual fee

Also, the card is pretty good even if you want to convert to gift cards

$675 of profit after meeting spend requirements
    + $575 supermarket gift cards
    + $100 cashback extra bonus
+ $450 travel credit extra bonus
    - $450 annual fee

    $250 x 2, $50 x 1, $25 x 1 in Woolworths gift cards, $575 total, with 4,640 points remaining.

    • +2

You forgot fuel surcharges. This changes a value of rtw on points. That is why I collect krisflyer, they don't charge for fuel on their own flights.

    • +1

OzBargain upvoting a post saying spending $6500+ to travel around the world is a great deal.

    • How easy is it to actually book one of these round the world flights tho? Where do you even go to book it?? I’ve never seen it in the searches.

      • +1

It is definitely a lot of effort. You basically need to try and work out all your individual flights and book it on the phone or the website https://www.pointhacks.com.au/qantas/round-the-world-classic…

        • Oh wow ok so you basically have to manually look up and try to get each one. That's so much effort. I've only been able to get single flights so far and even getting them for the right place and dates are a feat. Can't imagine what stars will have to align for you to get a world trip together.

  • Do retail shops accept AMEX wihtour chargig extra fee, my mate who has Amex has complain that not many retailers accept Amex and if they do they do charge extra fee on the charges.
    Is that true?

    Thanks..

    • +2

You don't get charged extra at Woolies or any big chains and retailers etc.

It's usually only some independent/small business storefronts that have a sign saying 1.5% surcharge etc.

    • +1

yes it is true, many retailers charge extra or won't accept amex, basically with Amex you need to have a backup card with Visa/MC or you may find it awkward as enough places don't accept or charge the full amex fee that it is difficult to only have amex. The exceptions tend to be supermarkets and the very large retailers that don't charge for using it..

  • does $450 Qantas Travel Credit has to be used by certain time period?

    • The Qantas Travel Credit is valid for 12 months. It can be used to book future travel, and it's possible to extend the usage out to almost 2 years, as Qantas releases flight bookings up to 353 days in advance.

      • Hi, is the travel credit only towards flights or could it be hotels too ?

        • The travel credit can only be used to book eligible flights with a Qantas flight number, no hotels unfortunately.

  • Is the 450 fee charged at the start? Or end of year? I won't be using the credit, but don't to pay the 450. Can you apply and cancel once points hot and before fee charged?
Or can the travel credit roll over?

    • Fee is charged at the start, and travel credit does not roll over from memory.

    • The $450 fee is charged in the first month of card membership. Amex advises that the bonus points are delivered to Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts 8 -10 weeks after eligible card members meet the spend criteria. Therefore, it isn't possible to take receipt of the points and cancel the card before paying the annual fee.

  • +1

    Approved in about 45 minutes

    • was it automatic or did you have to give them a call?

      • Uploaded my payslips and 45 minutes I got an SMS saying I was approved

        • Right! that's cool,

I got an SMS to give them a call after I uploaded the docs as they "need more info". waiting on call while the person reviews my application

  • Can Qantas Travel Credit be used to pay taxes on Classic Reward flights?

    • No, You have to book under Amex travel site, Everything is at top dollar full price

  • Whoa 18 months now
I got no idea when I cancelled my AMEX.
Over a year but not 18 months I think, oh well would’ve jumped on this

    • +1

Just give them a call, they will let you know I did it once to ensure it was >18months to ensure I got the bonus.

    • +1

Open an account with creditsavvy and check your credit account history

  • +1

I like a dumb person applied for this credit card without canceling my other credit cards ! That obviously affected the result of my application.

I want to re-apply after canceling other card (15k limit) but not sure if it is a good idea or if it is worth the second credit check hit. I have never been rejected before. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

    • Please don't take this as normal - I have 6 credit cards - I also apply for three cards at the same time with three approvals per year.*
You don't need to be risk-averse - if you can afford it - apply for it.*

You can do whatever you want - they simply make an assessment of salary, expenses, and your debt against its own internal policies and suitable credit check.*

If you lie, you will get an increased risk of rejection. Be honest with your amount of debt and expenses - it's easy for them to identify loans, credit card applications, and defaults.*

*This is NOT advice - I'm not liable for any rejected application.

      • +1

        thanks that is promising!

The person on the phone kept saying " we recommend only re-applying after 90 days of an unsuccessful application" but I kept asking why but he refused to give a straight answer. In the end he gave up and said "the website is open for application 24/7 you can do whatever you like" lol…

      • +1

Good luck if you go for a mortgage with 6 cc's…
        (Unless you're on mega bucks)

  • Asking as a first time comment here - given it’s Amex, do you find it’s harder to find merchants that accept this without adding a surcharge?

    • At least 90% of the merchants I go to accept Amex…I can't recall the last time I've been somewhere where a surcharge was added although sometimes they add in the sneaky surcharge on the payment machine. Can't tell if the surcharge is different between Amex and Visa/MC.

      • Thanks CaptainHolt :)

  • Hoping they'll make those of us with travel credit expiring in near future a decent deal like they did to those with credit expiring late last year, as in reality, travel is still highly questionable

    • +1

If you are not overlaying your own rules on top, then no, travel is not highly questionable

  • Any bonus points for referers?

    • Hi, this offer is only available via our website, it isn't accessible through any other channel, including the referral system.

  • Is it not possible to purchase carbon offset anymore in order to get the Qantas club lounge invites? Seems like the link doesn't work anymore and can't find anywhere on manage booking to purchase carbon offset option.

  • Is there a minimum credit limit? I can't find any.

  • @adelee - I'm not sure if the offer has maybe ended but every time I go to the website and click the link it opens the Amex website offering 55,000 points… am I doing something wrong?

    • Hi there, Amex informed us of an issue with the landing page yesterday which showed a revert to the standard 55k offer messaging. The issue was fixed later in the day and I can confirm the correct offer details are now displaying. If you are still seeing the 55k messaging, it may be due to caching, however please reach out if any issues.

  • applied at 9am, got a call at 1pm for some more info/docs. Got approval during that call. Now that was quick

    • Do you mind sharing what additional info/ docs did they ask for? Thanks!

      • +1

Just my pay slip and driver licence number, and they asked if they can do a credit check on the spot.

  • When I click on the offer the Amex site is only displaying 55,000 points…

    • Hi, we've had confirmation from Amex that the issue has been fixed, however it is possible a cached version could be showing. Would you be able to clear your cache and check again? Sorry for the inconvenience, and please reach out if you are still unable to view the correct offer.

  • Anyone know if you can give the lounge passes to someone else, my wife and son may fly somewhere without me can she use passes without cardholder present?
