  • This model was replaced by the AX3200, but I'm fairly sure they are near identical with the addition of WebLink and an extra AV In the only things I know of added to the latter

  • How is Sony in terms of firmware updates?

    • +4

The last firmware update for this model is from Nov 2020. I'd say don't expect too much.

    • -3

      Too pricey. Not much colour..

  • Does anyone know what the installation costs would be for something like this?

    • +6

It's all dependent on the car. For example I recently had a pioneer Headunit installed in my lancer. The Headunit was $500, I spend $300 on other parts I needed to buy and then $100 for the installation. The "other parts" were a steering wheel controller so I could keep my steering wheel controls, a reverse camera switcher to I could keep my reverse camera and a facia kit would fit properly in my car.

However my buddy just installed one on his own and he only needed a few parts and those parts were cheaper than my ones, so it's all really dependent on the car itself.

      Hope that helps.

    • +9

I ended up doing it myself and I'm not a car person at all. I found an Aerpro connector for my car and followed instructions from a YouTube video.

Initially I reached out to some people on Airtasker but it didn't work out, so I decided to try it myself. It was the first "car thing" I've ever done and was pretty proud of myself after.

      • +3

Same here - the key is getting the right connector and faceplate, after that its actually fairly straight forward if you can find a YouTube tutorial.

        • +1

I was having trouble with finding that for my car, so just called up Aerpro direct and they were great in assisting with the specific bits I needed to buy. their website had too many options and confused me

        • I've got an older Sony headunit (non-Carplay/Android Auto), would they use roughly the same cables?

    • We recently installed the 3200. With 2 aeropro connectors (that the supercheap attendant helped us get) we installed it with no issues at all. The only difficult bit was that Samsung phones require the parking brake to be grounded, so we just needed to get an eyelet terminal and attach the wire to that and screw it in to a body piece. There's plenty of youtube videos on how to do it and was quite happy when we got it working.

      • Yeah everyone just grounds that wire - ie find a bolt to put it on under the dash.

    • I got AX 1000 two high freq and two low freq installed in an old van for 250 and the guy came to me.

  • I have this model head unit for about a year now. Was working great till recently android auto would disconnect constantly, i swapped multiple usb cables and tried different phones and problem still occurrs. Anyone else have this problem

    • Have you tried a factory reset under your head units settings?

      • Yeah factory reset didnt work

    • -1

It's normally a low quality USB C cable or your phones's USB port needs a clean

      • I had blitz wolf armoured cables, cygnet cables and generic brands. Phone was brand new (s20 ultra, s21 ultra and fold 3)

    • Same problem initially. Turned off battery saving mode.. Did the trick..

      • Is there a battery saving mode in the unit settings? I don't recall seeing one there I'll have a look again.

        • +1

Sorry.. didn't write properly.. battery saving on the phone..

    • As someone else said, I had bad experience with crappy cables, so try good quality cables

If that's not the case, then you should also look inside the port of your phone. Get a toothpick, file it down flat (or something plastic - just don't use metal) and take a bunch of crap (fluff, dirt) out of the port. You'll be surprised what comes out, and your cables will then fit snug again.

    • As others have suggested, it's most likely the firmware your device is running. I had the same issue on my XAV-AX5000 headunit and the latest update fixed it.

    • I have this unit and have the same problem. Firmware is the latest version but I still have the issue. Its very inconsistent. I've tried different cables didn't help me.

      • Tutn off Battery saving mode.

        • On the unit? Where is this option?

          • @bindok: Turn off battery saving on phone.. it keeps on terminating android auto because its running on background

            • @tikzzz: I’m on iOS and don’t use battery saving mode still have this issue of intermittent dropouts

    • In my experience, Android Auto problems are usually caused by the phone or the cable. This is because the AA interface and its functions are rendered almost entirely on the phone - the head unit is merely a conduit to carry the video, audio and touch/button inputs to and from the phone.

I've carried over two AA head units (Sony XAV-AX5000 and JVC KW-V930BW) over multiple cars and several phones. I had a Samsung S20 FE and an S21 last year which just had constant issues with AA (audio cutting out, audio UI freezes, occasionally complete freeze until unplug/replug cycle). I also had a Samsung A30 a while back that I replaced due to similar constant AA issues.

Never had issues with other phones (Google Pixel 2 & 3, OnePlus 6T, LG V20). So just anecdotally… I don't trust Samsung phones with AA anymore.

  • This does not come with a reverse camera.

    • +1

but you can connect one (e.g. <$20 off ebay), I have done it

      • Can you elaborate on this please. Any good eBay links? And how tricky to install? Thanks

        • +1

Its really not that complicated once you watch a few videos on youtube to understand what ultimately has to be done.

Pretty much just search "Reverse Camera Car" and you'll find heaps. Example: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/373195847180

Things to consider when picking a camera:

          • where you will mount it on your car and how your selected camera will mount in that location (carefully consider this, play it out in your head)
          • cable length (do a test measure of your car and the routing youll have to do to run the cables from the dash to the boot, I used about 6m in a ute where most of it was straight line).
          • flash or night vision - flash will activate when camera is "live" as noted with the options below
          • field of view (too much fish eye lens effect looks weird and not uniform when reversing)
          • pixels dont really matter for the function
          • options to disable reverse lines or flip camera by cutting cables (you may want this option as the Sony has a customisable reverse lines function)

For installation, complexity depends on your car and how easy it will be to route the wires to the back.

Also, difficulty depends on what function you want to be able to achieve:

          1) manually switch to reverse with on screen camera button >> just install the kit as is, camera will always be "live"
          2) only automatic switching to reverse camera when you put gear in reverse >> you'll need to splice into your reverse light wire , camera will only be "live" when in reverse
          3) both automatic switching AND manual option >> same as step 2 but you'll need to run another wire from the front to the back , camera will only be "live" when in reverse or manually activated and not all the time as with option 1

          Youtube videos:

Some things you might want to to get from Bunnings (dont need if you have similar at home):

This was one of the product reviews on repcos website

"This unit will only pair with one phone, which means if more than one person uses the car and wants to connect their phone, you have to delete and re-pair every time you swap.
When the USB connection is used it automatically pairs the phone's bluetooth so you can't use one phone on USB and have the bluetooth work on the other phone when you need it.

Android auto is extremely limited for music player support, so unless you only use one of the more common music apps, you really have to use bluetooth instead of AA."

Just my .2c, I've had my eye on this unit instead as it comes with a reverse camera as well but haven't pulled the trigger yet

When the USB connection is used it automatically pairs the phone's bluetooth so you can't use one phone on USB and have the bluetooth work on the other phone when you need it.

Multiple simultaneous Bluetooth phone support just sounds fraught with complexity - what happens when both phones are making calls ? Which comes through the car ? I think limiting the Bluetooth to the main phone is the best trade-off.

Android auto is extremely limited for music player support, so unless you only use one of the more common music apps, you really have to use bluetooth instead of AA."

This is deliberate - Android Auto only presents applications that have a minimal car interface. It doesn't present all your audio applications, because most of them are unsafe to use whilst driving 👍
If an app you use doesn't offer a car interface, then chat to the Devs and get them to make one !

    • +1

yeah this sucks. our first sony car play unit (xav-ax100) can only connect with one bluetooth device at a time but if i drive the car after my wife has been driving, it tries to connect to hers and fails - then falls back to mine. then if she drives the car after me, it'll try mine and fail - then go back to hers. Its exactly what i'd expect.

we got the newer xav-1000 for our second car and it will only connect with one device unless you remove the current phone.

      • I have the XAV-5000 and it works how you describe. Both of our phones are paired, so if either of us are alone in the car, our phone connects. If we are together, pretty random I think as it will be whichever phone connects first.

  • I got one of these for $349 over 2 years ago - it's been so solid. My only complaint is that I can't switch which side the Apple Carplay interface is on (it's technically set for left-hand drive) and that I can't map long-press of buttons on my steering wheel.

I have this model - I got it on a great deal in the past (I think I paid around $350). I ended up installing it myself (with never having done any car mod stuff before - I was pretty scared), which went fine.

The unit is great for the price I paid, but the two main issues are:

    • The screen is resistive touch, not capacitive. This means it's not like your phone
    • The screen doesn't do great in sunny situations with glare.

Other than that, it's a good unit. If the capacitive model is on special, perhaps go for that.

    • I agree, always go for capacitative screen!

      • +1

Yeah I would agree with this call. I have just installed the 3200 in my Navara and on a sunny day the screen is unusable, just can't see it at all.

I have a pioneer 5350bt in my other car which is capacitive which is much better (albeit lower in the dash)

        • Yep I've got this pioneer and it's great in full sun!

    • I have the XAV-5000 which is capacitive. I just checked my emails, I paid $442.50 at Autobarn in December 2020.

  • Is that wireless android auto?

  • +1

I just installed the new 3200 model and regret it. It's a dated system.

  • +1

If you need to know what parts to buy or do a self-installation this might be a good site to get some information.
    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-qdgJnCjIVe5/car/carselector.as…

I would prefer a Pioneer if available around the same price point.

Observation: Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto seems to attract a 50% price premium even in 2022

    • +1

There's no point having wireless Android Auto unless you have wireless phone charging. As wireless Android auto drains the battery quickly, if you have to plug in your phone to charge, might as well just plug it in for Android Auto.

AERPRO can help to find the right facia and connector kit for model. I used this to find cables for my car.

    • +1 to Aerpro. I used their fascsia and cables in my Mazda 3 and they worked brilliantly. Minimal effort and clean as.
Hardest part for me was finding a reverse trigger wire for to make it auto-switch to the camera, but an hour with a multimeter and I found one.

  • I have ax3000 and ax5000 in both of my car, very excited at first use initially but getting lazy to connect everytime so mostly just use radio nowaday. Unit boot up quickly as soon as the car starts, ax3000 has resistive screen which not as crisp and bright as ax5000.

    • Get an android system and ins android apps . Watching youtube beats radio and air play.

      • is it new app? how do I install?

    • +1

I have also had both, and recently purchased one of these to make it wireless.

  • Does any one know the Honda Odyssey 2020 can use this head unit?

    • Yes, Aerpro make an aftermarket double-din faciato suit your car.

      • No they don’t.

No fascia available for the 2020 odyssey yet.

        • Are you sure? The link I provided says its to suit 2014 onwards.

The factory headunit/dash setup on the 2020 model also looks to be the same as what is pictured.

          • @magic8ballgag: 2020 got that new floating head unit look thing.

But if it’s an early 2020 may get lucky with the older style.

    • As a fellow odyssey owner, mines from 2018… How the feck does Honda not have Android Auto in their OEM units?

  • Recently fitted a similar Kenwood DMX8020S to my old RAV4. Totally worth the effort. Keep in mind this is just the start financially. These units require a harness, patch lead, facia (ears), and maybe more. That's another $100-$300 depending on the car, and another $220 (at Bankstown Sound) to have it installed. I installed my own, took about an hour and a half.

    • Doesn't require a harness if you know how to correctly rewire and solder the cables, also doesnt need a facia plate if its just a standard double din

      • +1

Doesn't require a harness if you know how to correctly rewire and solder the cables,

Incorrect - in most modern cars you need the harness interface because it converts signals from the car (like speed, reverse sensor audio, steering wheel controls, etc. etc.) into signals the headunit can actually understand.

The days of direct wiring are long gone !

  • Can a Camry use this?

    • Any car can use it as long as its a double din, what year and model is your camry? I have mine installed in a 2001 camry

  • No DAB

  • My car has Sony xav-712BT and it doesn’t support AirPlay.
No firmware update to support it.

What model am I looking for to update to?
    Does xav1000 work?

Also my rear camera doesn’t show any clear image at night, can I replace that camera with a better one? Where do I get it? How do I replace it?

    2005 camry
