Can you install Windows 11 on this?

    • +2

Yes can ship with Windows 11

      • thanks…

      • Apart from the TPM setting, did you have to make any other mods, to get Windows 11 to install ?

    • +3

CPU not in approved list. Possible to install but no guarantee Microsoft will continue provide update to unsupported hardware.

      • +1

Oh good call - thanks for checking

  • does 7th gen support all the current security requirements to meet 11

    • Yes, we did installed fresh Windows 11 to one of this PCs It work well

    • +1

According to Microsoft no, windows 11 not supported on 7th Gen https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/564184/wh…

      • so its to supported then dont say it is you can always get around things but dont lie and say its something you should be running

  • +1

    intel says it isnt supported????

  • +1

You need to turn on TMP from bios, It work with this PC for us. I can upload some PIC if their is a way to do so

    • +1

yeh i can also run it on a gen 5 if i want to not recommended though

    • +1

TPM of this machine should be 2.0 but likely able to update if not. However CPU not on support list meaning MS may stop updating W11 on the machine at any time. If want to buy this machine, recommend to stick to W10 and MS guarantee support til Oct 2025.

7th gen is not worth it. Not much difference between 4th gen and 7th gen. 8th Gen is the breakthrough.

Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake are all the same uarch.

Too expensive, doesn't look like a deal

  • +5

For all the Windows 11 commenters, yes this will run it unofficially. However is not officially supported by Microsoft as of writing, basically this PC is too old.
Regarding the PC itself, this is too expensive for what you get. Look for something with an 8th Gen Intel / Ryzen 2000 series CPU or newer for better value and Windows 11 support.

This would be a deal at $250.

  • Would be better to build your own PC.

  • there is a hp prodesk 600 G4 sff on my local marketplace. i5 8500 1TB ssd 8g ram for $380

  • +6

    Not a deal!
The i5-7500 is not officially supported by Windows 11, therefore no advantage in buying this over an older model like an i7-4770. The i7-4770 (4cores / 8threads) is around 15% faster than the i5-5700 (4cores / 4threads) (cpubenchmark.net), but can be had for around 1/2 the price of this (example)

      I5 5700 you say?? Lol.

I got it right the first time around, and in the benchmark link :), but yeah mistyped the second time.

Mmm… finally pulling the trigger to add my 2c's. I'm not sure when these become 'bargains' these days. Late 2016/early 2017 buying a Dell Optiplex 790 - some i7 2600k box, whacking a GTX 1050Ti, extra RAM and an SSD in. It probably cost some $600 all up - I honestly can't remember, but the box itself was just shy of $200. Back then, that was a 'bargain' - build a capable gaming rig at the time that would tie over for a couple of years. Couldn't really justify a new PC build then - coincidently probably would have been a 7th gen then.

Shortly after, 3rd and 4th gens started coming down (remember these deals every other week? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327001). I'm struggling to see why up to 7th gen these aren't coming down to similar prices. It's like they've stagnated for the last few years. They've hit a price, and that's just what they are. Sure - if someone needed a cheap desktop that doesn't involve gaming, this sort of thing might do.

I do genuinely understand the appeal of second hand hardware that is still capable of running most software and saving the few dollars - similar comparison to used cars. My entry to IT involved a lot of swap meets and upgrading old Pentium II hardware as capable machines. Even then to now, the brand and form factor don't usually matter (although usually smaller the better - corporate machines don't usually have a fantastic design that you want to put on show) - unless like in the first example I wanted a small PC that could host a reasonable(ish) video card. Going a full desktop isn't going to net you much - a custom motherboard with a custom power supply - not great if you plan on upgrading anything. Given the price of video cards these days, even at the lower end (I've not kept up with the latest kind of build you can do that would match the 1050 Ti build), it probably then stands to reason that form factor just doesn't matter. As such, Reboot IT have an AIO i5 7600 that seems to be a similar spec for about $30 cheaper.

It wasn't long ago they had the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 for $389.

    https://www.reboot-it.com.au/p/Used-Computers/Core-i5/HP-Eli…

Budget PC is never cheap on this sort of stuff, but the 3040 SFF is $349

    https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/rfb-dell-3040-sff-i5-8gb-…

eBay is full of SFF's including this one for $385 (PLUSJAN5 to $365).

Bottom line, I can't see in any way how it's a bargain. Regular pricing for this, maybe. Perhaps even on the high side. With the uncertainty of Windows 11 support, I've drawn the line at 8th gen and above now. Anything below that didn't see too many particular performance improvements that would warrant the "need" to get a 7th gen, over say a 3rd gen i7.
