Scoot's back with crazy prices to London, UK from $399 one way!

All flights on Scoot include 10kg carry on luggage. Some finding RyanAir gets added at the end and that could affect luggage.

Dates: Now until June 2022

I haven't flown Scoot personally, but it actually does surprisingly well at airlineratings.com

Covids spreading like crazy. Unlike last year, now everyone knows someone that has it. Would have to be crazy to even think of travelling overseas, unless it was absolutely necessary

    • +59

Its a part of everyday life now. Its never going away.

        • +19

          Should've been preparing yourself.

        • +5

I think you zigged instead of zagged there mate. He didn't get a single neg :).

@UFO: I was referring to my own comment…

          That's a self-fulfilling prophecy dude

@[Deactivated]: I'm seeing a pattern here…. everything everyone else types is wrong, and you're right.

Stop digging mate, you're just falling deeper :).

              • -3

                @UFO: I’m not digging, dude.

The problem isn't covid being in the community. It's instant terms changes when it comes to covid. I'm not really threatened by covid, but I wouldn't be booking a holiday because shit could change instantly and I could be stuck in another country's shitty hotel quarantine or something.

    • +29

Yeah you’d have to be crazy to live your life. Much better off to stay at home and stare at the walls triple masked.

      • +2

And wearing a condom at all times

      • +3

I'm a homebody, covid has been fantastic for me in general both work and home life.

    • +1

Does anyone even care about Covid anymore?

      • -1

        Only stupid news media

      • +5

Yeah, the immunocompromised, like me, say "hi"

    • +15

It is amazing to me how compliant many Australians are in giving up the freedoms they once enjoyed. I have relatives who live overseas, and travel is perfectly normal for them, with the appropriate preparation.

      • +4

I don't think that's entirely fair. Many supported restrictions for a variety of reasons such as the unknown severity or long lasting impacts of Covid, and the risk to family. However, the recent backflip on approach to Covid from the government just makes current restrictions confusing and frustrating as it's a mish mash of 'let it rip' and containment. Wtf are we actually doing?

My daughter came back positive yesterday after she got it from child care and now we need to quarantine. But with so many people walking around the community positive anyway, I feel like, in comparison, we just get penalised for doing the right thing.

Unfortunately I think the dear mongering here driven by government/media was far greater than oversees. As others have said take precautions and live life, otherwise enjoy self imposed lockdown purgatory indefinitely!

        • Sound like the Dr has health privilege!

      • +1

Trust me, I know Australia is one big nanny state, but talk to people from the hard hit countries and you will be amazed how many know relatives and friends that have died with covid

        • but talk to people from the hard hit countries

If NSW were a country it would rank 8th highest in the world for infections. Traveling anywhere else is likely to be lower risk.

      • +1

You think all this is a charade? Like some sort of conspiracy or something?

        • +2

the name is a subtle hint

        • You think all this is a charade? Like some sort of conspiracy or something?

No. Is that the first thing that jumped into your head?

Maybe go back and read what I actually wrote rather than what you wanted to believe…

      • Covid is not that different from the flu

If I was going somewhere that had a bad influenza strain rapidly spreading I wouldn't go. I was stuck in Iran with the Flu once…totally miserable holiday and a waste of money…..think outside of the box a little

        • If I was going somewhere that had a bad influenza strain rapidly spreading I wouldn't go

Which is fine, your choice. But I shouldn't be constrained by your choices…

          • @1st-Amendment: how are you constrained? you are free to go

            • @slipperypete:

              you are free to go

No I'm not. Many places still have travel restrictions which change week by week and then there is the risk of getting home again. The risk is not the virus, it is being caught in a regulatory trap made by incompetent governments, as I said above

    • +9

      Covids spreading like crazy.

This is precisely why we should go overseas, the exploding cases means its as safe overseas as it is here.

      • -3

Once it becomes common like the other flu variants, yes sure. But, that's some way off. You never now if there is a new more deadly variant around

        • We just got a new variant, so you fly now before another pops up.

          • @annarchon: Is that how it works? You sound like you get your information from which way the wind is blowing. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with people living their life, but there's still a chance of another variant. Omicron has been around for 2.5 - 3 months now.

            • @kiriakoz: That’s why I said fly now before another variant pop up. We got a fast spreading, but relatively less deadly variant in Omicron. The next one?

                • @mlburnian: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/total-and-daily-covid-cas…

We are at 2000 cases per million per day.

US is at 700 and UK is at 1000. Even if they are under reporting by 50%, we are still right up there. Its no longer safer in Australia vs outside of Australia. The only difference is medical care, and that's where travel insurance comes in, and frankly with our over stretched health system, you might not even get better care here.

We are no longer the island paradise, we are the covid central.

                  • @annarchon:

and that's where travel insurance comes in,

Just be careful with that, for example if you fly, test negative and are are near another passenger who tests positive, some governments will force you into quarantine. You don't have Covid necessarily, so your insurance doesn't cover it… just one example where you can be caught out.

        • Do you realise how viruses evolve? That is an incorrect statement you made.

        • You never (k)now…

Well in that case, never do anything ever. Because you know, you never know…

    • Mate, tell my wife, please, tell my wife.

  • +15

I know three people now who've gone overseas and been prevented permission to board a plane back to Australia due to testing positive. You'd have to be really brave (as in stupid, not courageous) to travel overseas right now.

    • +6

This is also my biggest fear.

        • +1

Being sick abroad is no joke, yeah you could have light symptoms, but where are you going to stay? Who’s gonna help you if you need anything? Do you know their hospital system if it gets to that? If you have answers to all these question, travel wherever you want.

        • +1

Please say that when you get COVID in America

          • -1

            @Carmen Sandiego:

Being sick abroad is no joke, yeah you could have light symptoms, but where are you going to stay?

Already had Covid, it was exactly the same as a flu. I know at least a dozen people in my circle that have also had it and it was the same for them.
Stop being afraid of the bogeyman…

If you have answers to all these question, travel wherever you want.

I would but the government is making it extremely difficult, hence my original comment.

          • -1

            @Carmen Sandiego:

Please say that when you get COVID in America

I have friends in America who've had Covid. Just like when I had it, it was the just like the flu, nothing to see here.

Don't believe the hype, if you are not a high risk group (existing condition/obese/really old) you have nothing to worry about.

The government and media made it seem like we should all be afraid, but that is in their best interests for them, not you.

            • -1

@1st-Amendment: @1st-Amendment - I am in the high risk group with my autoimmune and neurodegenerative condition.

So, excuse me when I say that I am genuinely concerned about dying due to COVID, and not in 30-40 years with the help of government.

              • @Carmen Sandiego:

So, excuse me when I say that I am genuinely concerned about dying due to COVID

Well that's not so good for you, but there are millions of people not in these risk groups that shouldn't be held down by the same constraints.

                • +2

@1st-Amendment: Great for your friend - well done. Pity my surveys with friends/contacts who have covid, havent shown the same ratio of just like the flu.

One has been in hospital for 3 weeks now. Aged 35
One has had bad flu like symptom, aged 71
One (wife of 71 YO,) mild cold like symptoms
One wife of hospital contact has no symptoms

This makes me careful. Is it enough to declare Covid is dangerous to all. On that data all I can say is be careful. But surveys based on personal experience of 1 arent that scientific.

Then again its the internet and you, cant tell whether I am telling porkies or not. Just like I cant with you.

                  • -1

                    @RockyRaccoon:

Then again its the internet and you, cant tell whether I am telling porkies or not. Just like I cant with you.

That's why we have data, and the data strongly supports the view that the adverse affects are mostly with old people, obese people, or people with existing serious underlying health conditions. Outside of those, the numbers are not that scary at all.
There will always be exceptions, 2 years of data across the entire planet still says those exceptions are small.

To put it into perspective, look at net deaths: https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/AUS/australia/death-ra…
Hardly the end of times scenarios we hear about EVERY_SINGLE_DAY

Which is fair enough to be concerned, these flights are not for you. Get Vacc'd, isolate and distance as much as you can and wait another few years until things settle down and see whats what then.

                • @ruprectaus: Thank you for understanding! @1st-Amendment clearly doesn't care if I die or not… :/

I absolutely want to go overseas before I get worse. Am double vaxxed (need to figure out my booster) and work has allowed all of us the choice to WFH so, I am taking it.

The SO and I are thinking 2024 ish for overseas things, and America in 2028.

    • You can wait it out and fly after.

      • +2

        When til 2040 lol.

People need to open their eyes. The rest of the world has opened up except North Korea… sorry Australia the Hermit nation

        • +1

Sorry should have clarrified. Wait out your covid and fly back after.

        • Aus has mostly opened up, aside from WA and no great loss there. NZ is still closed up, as is most of SE Asia.

    • +1

This is what travel insurance is for?

Plenty would cover that, and most isolation is 5-7 days now. Not a huge deal at all if you are prepared for the risk.

      • +11

Exactly. O/S travel is all about getting good deals with good insurance having good flexibility. No point in waiting decades for life to return to “normal”. This is normal. 😷

        • +2

April last year I got some travel insurance for a trip domestically. Essentially anything covid related voided the insurance.

Glad to hear that that has changed.

          • +2

            @Azmunga: Umm… it hasn't.

You get COVID, you're on your own. Insurance ain't covering squat.

            • @UFO: It has. I traveled abroad last month and used GoInsurance. Everything Covid was explicitly covered.

      • +4

Sure, assuming you can pay the (not cheap) costs of that specific type of insurance, pay the excess, don't have work/kids/pets to return to…

        • Not really specific. Basically every travel insurance company now covers this.

          Excess is ~$250 (no change).

Certainly not for everyone but plenty of people would be in the situation to do it.

      • +1

Wow I'm surprised insurance covers this as I thought this would be pretty high risk

        • +1

Insurance costs for this type of situation was only about $260 per person with a standard excess.
Really not that excessive, and if that sort of cost is going to prevent you going overseas, you probably are best off staying at home.

          • @madreece: Yeah that's awesome! I mean more expensive than before covid (I don't think I ever paid more than $100 pp)

          • @madreece: Sounds very expensive, just bought insurance for a week long Thailand trip with world2cover’s top level cover for about $83 with zero excess, about $20 cheaper with standard excess, covers the usual covid-related predicaments

            • @parcus: Mine was for two months for world, not including USA

            • +1

@parcus: Lol yeah that was for one week in Thailand, that's why it was so cheap

    • The real reason not to travel :(

Stuck in budget airline for 21hrs in the air with random people who might or might not be sick in a pandemic, no thanks.

    • -8

with random people who might or might not be sick in a pandemic, no thanks.

OMG sick! You should never leave the house, who knows, you might get sick…

      • +4

You should never leave the house

Yeah there is a puddle of sick just out my front door. You can leave your house, just not being stupid and jump into a scrum (I am not a rugby fan) in the middle of a pandemic.

There is a difference between necessary (like I've had a heart attack and need to be in close proximity to people in a hospital) and just making bad choices (like I see people going through bins of rags at Myer Sale and think I might just go in there and rub shoulders and maybe suck in a few breaths of strangers that have been unknown places).

  • +16

Just tried BNE-London (all) in mid-March. Shortest travel time was 33:45 ($709). To get the $522 fare, the total travel time was 56:30.

    And 3 stops (ie 4 flights - BNE-MEL-SIN-ATH-LCY).

    Yeah? Nah.

(Thanks OP though for the thought and work involved)

  • Awesome! Thanks op

  • +3

yay - the 34 pages of scrolling is back

  • Yeah nah.

  • +1

If Djokovic wins then they should open the international borders, for the vaccinated and unvaccinated too.

A few years ago I booked with scoot because we were broke, 40hrs each way would not recommend due to the flight times. Each leg was with a budget airline tough to deal with if anything bad happens along the way. I would pay the extra and get the more direct flights. The whole process of booking the flights was easy though.

  • +11

Scoot is woeful with refunds, flight cancellations/changes/delays.
Wouldn't go near them in the current travel climate.

Definitely in for a surprise if you're not familiar with budget long haul travel.

    • +7

I second this - I've posted my specific situation in another comment below but this should be a big red warning here of the headache and potential loss of the amount you spent.

What I really forgot (after not flying for a few years) is how shite they were before the pandemic. They are now practically unreachable.

    • This, most likely outcome is flight gets moved and you lose your money, or worse you get stuck somewhere and spend thousands trying to fix your travel arrangements.

  • Any return flights?

  • +2

The $399 fare from MEL is actually Scoot to Berlin then Ryanair to London. The booking link is to a website called kiwi.com where they charge an extra $47 for carry-on cabin baggage. Only a small "personal item" is included in the $399. OP's description that 10kg is included is false.

    • -2

Not all to Kiwi.com. I'll take a look - Scoot's policy is 10kg carry on (2 pieces), and generally on same booking you get to maintain it across bookings.

    • Yep actual sale here seems to be scoot’s syd/mel/per-berlin flights for ~$350 one way, then it’s just adding on a flight to london which should be easy enough to find cheaply separately if need be

  • Good deal if you dont want to return from the UK and If COVID doesnt scare you.

Personally i think this Virus is going to hamper international (and some domestic) travel for at least another 6-12 months.

    • +2

I'm not sure why people are getting downvoted for their opinion. We can disagree but downvoting someone for a legitimate opinion is childish.

      • You are right of course. I like to think that most agree and we support you by upvoting you to remove the negs others put on as they don't agree with you. People often struggle with opinions and yet wre unwavering from their own.

        • I think this is the social media effect. Because we’re often used to Facebook etc reflecting our views and values, we find any opinion different to ours “offensive”.

  • Ignoring COVID risks, taking Scoot for a long haul flight is very ambitious.

The seat is uncomfortable on a five hour flight (PER - SIN). I wouldn't dare to take such a long flight on Scoot.

    • +2

Not so worried about Covid, the true horror is the long distance flight with muliple connections on a LCC.

    • I've used them several times but always SccotBiz which is excellent value for money. Big and comfy seats with oodles of legroom.

  • +1

When I changed the booking to return, in a couple of random tests got Etihad for about $20 more than scoot for round trip. Definitely only a one way deal. 1.3k Aud
