these are way smaller than I originally thought

  • +1

    What does Smart plug mean?

    • -1

      smart powerpoint plug

    • +3

A power plug you can switch on/off over wifi (using an app, Google assistant, Alexa etc).

      • -4

So does that mean this device can function without being plugged?

        • +14

Technically yes. It does require a bit of handy work (not that difficult).
I rewired mine so that the light bulb it has its own solar panel attached and doesn't have to be plugged in.
The troublesome thing is it doesn't work when its dark.

          • +1

@tensionday: That's because you don't have wireless power. Have you configured it for Power-Over-Air yet ?

          • @tensionday: That's a nice DIY way. I'm wondering whether it's cost effective if you have a small lithium battery that's just enough for your device.

Ps. I was talking about the clock. Would be handy to carry it around with you to different rooms like your phone.

            • +1

              @PeeDee: I see!

Yes, its simply rewired as any old powerplug connected to solar, so you can use the clock still. Its a great DIY plug and play.

I have one on my bedroom balcony where I get good sunlight and use it as an alarm.
The only small caveat is that each day, I have my phone set to wake me up so that I can open the glass doors so I can hear my alarm.

              Works great! Definitely recommend!

              • @tensionday: Going out of topic but this sounds like an interesting project. Might be better to ask you whether you know places that sell the gears I'd need to set up one? If you know affordable ones plus little higher-end ones.

              • @tensionday: Lucky you woke you up in time so you can open the doors to hear your alarm, what kind of phone do you have?

    • +5

it got a really high score on the HSC, so probably will listen to your demands more.

  • This seems like an absolute steal for $49. Does anyone have any negatives to provide?

    • +2

Purchased these when they were $80, excellent value, definitely recommend a purchase.

      • Good enough for me. Have just moved into my first home and have been super keen to get the whole place "smarted up" so this couldn't have come at a better time. If I choose to mix and match the brands of bulbs, Google will be able to figure it out right?

Stock for both versions available at Oxley FYI Brisbane folk.

        • +1

Yep we've got a mosaic of smart bulb/switch brands and google handles it like a champ.

    • Newer version of the clock is out.

      • I find the newer version is really trying to be a bedside clock. It includes a wireless charging dock and is more expensive.

I use mine as an office clock and don't use wiress charging.

    • +5

This is the old version of the smart clock. It's basically a Google Home Mini, except with a small screen. I personally like it because I can connect to my Google Photos and it's like a nice digital photo frame.

      • I didn't think it can do photo frame

    • Its the old model, so likely just a clearance. That said, I have one at home and its fantastic. Not the greatest audio quality, but for something which sits next to the bed and autodims the time and has google assistant built in - its perfect.

      • Can this connect to a PC and use its mic and speaker for meetings etc?

        • My understanding of the bluetooth is that it is for audio out only, not mic in.

    • +2

Speakers can be a bit lack lustre but as long as you have the expectation that this is an alarm clock and not a bluetooth speaker its more than adequate, it gets more than loud enough for a single room. It only has one option for ambient noise when falling asleep, its a cool feature but listening to the "bushland" style noises gets old pretty quick.

Aside from that its fantastic, I reckon if you go in expecting an alarm clock you will be pleased with the little extras it provides. I bought it at full price a year or so back and I am more than happy with it. FWIW I also don't believe the second version is worth the extra spend.

      • I've got plenty of quality speakers around the place - honestly I haven't had a clock next to my bed since I was a kid so this is exactly what I'm after. Thanks everyone for the words.

    • -1

Negatives, yes it's Google and not Alexa.

  • Has any one used it in bedroom? Is it visible in the night, but dim enough to not to disturb sleep?

    • +5

Yes, it dims by room brightness

    • +1

A lot of the feedback on saw on this first model was that the screen was a bit bright for some people to have bedside.
Suspect that was part of the reason for the two models after moving to a more basic screen with just the time. I have the 2nd gen, but that lives in the ensuite, so can't even comment on that ;)
So probably depends how light sensitive you are in bed.

    • +1

I have one on my bedside table, unless you sleep in the pitch black it will be fine. It automatically adjusts to several different image and brightness settings depending on time of day and light input. The darkest option when all lights are off blacks out the entire screen bar the time and I would argue its no brighter than a standard LED clock that most would be using now anyway. I think they got the lighting bang on honestly.

  • +4

    B22 also https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lenovo-smart-clock-starter-ki…

Not much stock in Sydney area for both kits it seems.

    • +1

is the bulb dimmable and works with any old b22 socket?

  • is this the smart clock or smart clock essential?

    • Smart Clock gen 1

      • whats the differences between them?

  • +4

Make sure to plug the smart clock to the smart plug, so if the clock misbehave you can always turn it off ;)

  • -2

All new Lenovo clock in 2022 only have alexa. So no worry abt old stock

    • +2

NO - Lenovo Smart Clock 2 is still google

    • +1

Two different versions I think, but the Alexa version was only recently announced. Seems more pretty less identical to the 3rd gen model with Google, optional wireless charger base etc.

  • This clock has speaker and we can stream music to it, doesn't it?

    • +3

      Correct

    • +2

It sounds terrible for music considered to a Nest Mini though.

      • +1

Eh, unless there's a significant difference between this 1st Gen and the 2nd Gen with the basic screen, I think the sound is fine for a tiny speaker.
You're not going to start a house party with one (or maybe you are, you might have a small house and/or small friends), but it's been fine for streaming music in the rooms I've had it.
Agree if sound is main focus, nest mini arguably better, but the screen is pretty useful even if only for displaying the time.

        • +1

From my own research the speakers from first to second gen are the same in the smart clock. I think its more than adequate for a morning tune to get ready to.

    • +1

      Links?

    • Unless you live in a forrest you are screwed.
You can't escape the wifi these days.

    • +2

Yeah, I remember reading about an experiment run by high school students. They planted the same seeds, some next to a router, and some far away from the router. The ones further away grew a lot better. Based on that school experiment, they said wi-fi is damaging. However, other smarter students realised that the heat produced by the router was enough to diminish the growth of the seeds, not the wi-fi.

      • Ever heard of "hot houses"?

    • You probably better not having wifi in your house all together then just a single device if that worries you

    • Lots of studies that all found no damage occurring.

  • Anyone know offhand if the smart plug works natively/easily with Home Assistant?

    • +1

      Should be tuya

  • +3

Scrolled thru the comments and no one mentions its one killer feature: this is the only clock (and its newer version) that has a built in accelerometer for smacking the top of the clock to shut it up. Such an underrated feature.

Own one since launch and still love it, $49 is an absolute steal. May consider buying some for the kids.

  • Can you watch youtube or other streaming apps on it? eg. Netflix

    • Nope

    • Why would you want to when it's smaller than your phone?

  • Oos?

  • +1

This is the first variant, there is a new one which comes with a dock and a wireless charger. I absolutely love mine, the product is exactly as described - its a smart clock and nothing more. You can listen to internet radio, you can operate your smart electronics and you can set alarms for the morning(with a nice ambient noise to fall asleep to - theres only one option and it mimics living in the bush - crickets and the rest). You can also send audio via bluetooth from your phone and it will work like a not so portable speaker.

This thing is really basic, but I personally love it and for what it does I don't think I would ever go back to a traditional clock

  • The Lenovo Smart devices are all Tuya compatible if that helps anyone (I've got mixed brands but all Tuya compatible including Lenovo bulbs and sensors)

    • Does that mean they work with the Smart Life app?

      • Yes. I use Tuya Smart but only because it was the first one I loaded rather than Smart Life and you can't easily transition between the two, though there doesn't seem to be an advantage to either these days.

  • Just to clarify (for those in the know) - neither of the two kits available at this price are compatible with Alexa?

Seems (from reading up, and comments above) that there is an Alexa version of the clock coming/available, but not in any version of this kit/deal atm, correct?

    • +1

You can setup the power plug and bulb under Tuya Smart or Smart life and you can control this via Alexa, Google or even both. The clock however will be integrated with Google only.

  • OOS everywhere in QLD

    • Yeah, can't be delivered in QLD.

    • None near Melbourne as well

Lenovo Smart Clock Starter Kit (E27)”

  • All gone in SA

  • +1

Might be worth checking instore. Just went into Helensvale Qld and they had 2 in stock on shelf.

  • FYI, just left Moore Park Sydney there are 2 x E27 and 1 x B22 left on the shelf.

    • -1

So even though online shows OOS, it's available in store ?

  • This was the first 'smart" stuff I bought a few years ago, and was impressed.

I went out and purchased more globes for the lamps, and one I have set up to automatically turn on and off overnight.

I mainly use the plug for the Christmas Tree lights and use Google Home to turn it on and off.

Clock was a present for the youngest (age 10) and she loved it, and just upgraded it to the new version with wireless charging pad for her new phone (my cunning plan was that the clock/charging pad sat on her bookshelf, so she couldn't look at her phone in bed at night when it was charging…)

  • +1

    Looks like OOS in WA

  • Since losing the LCD display from the G19 moving to the G915, I've used this clock to display time for when I'm gaming late. It sits nicely under my monitor and is big enough to see the time with a quick glance.

Had to disable the google assistant feature cause my kids kept trying to trigger it.

    Absolute bargain at this price.

  • Can u plug Ethernet into it, primitive I know but no wifi at work, was gonna use as desk clock

    • Only wifi.

Curiously, some of the Amazon Echo's apparently support Ethernet, but you need to buy a dongle for it as they do ethernet via Micro USB connection.

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Adapter-Alexa-Generation-Micro-Con…

Read the reviews carefully though as some users reported that it didn't work with some Echo models despite them being mentioned on the listing.
