Why Do Slow Drivers Drive in The Right Lane?
Why why why….why why…. Why? Oh why? 10 words… Why?

I pay the same taxes as you do, I can drive in whatever lane I want to!

  • +2

There is some weird thing that makes drivers modify their speed match the speed of the vehicle they are passing without knowing.

Unless they use cruise control they are likely to change their speed based on what they are passing.

  • +2

No common sense for those drivers all sit at same speed on all lanes, regardless of speed limit.

  • -1

    Cause Toyota

  • +4

No cars should really be in the right lane over 80km/hr unless you are overtaking.

  • +7

I'm sick of people who go well over the speed limit complaining about people doing the limit in the right lane, where both lanes have traffic there is no issue. If you want to speed go to the racetrack.

    • It's a ROAD RULE - keep left unless overtaking.

I'm sick of people ignoring this rule - if you want to break rules join the mafia.

      • Keep left if over 80kms / hour and if not overtaking
When lanes are busy i drive the speed limit in right lane
If you don't like it i don't care

        • +3

"Keep left if over 80kms / hour and if not overtaking"

Correct. It is in fact courtesy to keep left everywhere BUT you're correct and I will concede the law says over 80.

"When lanes are busy i drive the speed limit in right lane"

If there's cars to your left and in front of you absolutely no worries at all fully within your right.

"If you don't like it i don't care"

Don't have a problem with any of what you just said. As long as you stay left when you can all good.

  • +5

There have been so many threads on this…

  • +6

I dont drive but i thought you only go in the right lane to overtake? why are you even in the right lane to begin with?

    • Op is unclear whether he's referring to highways etc going at +80kmph where that rule applies, or just regular suburban 50/60kmphr roads. Can't really overtake overtake in the cbd/suburbs most of the time anyway.

    • Because there are too many cars, so spread out and reduce the risk of fender benders.

  • Happens in every single country. Nothing new. It's frustrating but they're entitled to do the speed limit there.

    • +2

Try doing it on the motorways in the UK and see how you get on!

      • Happens all the bloody time. Whether M25, M1 or M6… 70 MPH lane hoggers. Even on the A40.

        • And you get blinded by the car behind you flashing their headlights

      • +2

driving in the UK I think I noticed most people didn't indicate when changing lanes there

slightly annoying to Australian drivers who are legally required and trained to do so

    • Try it in Germany.

    • +2

      Not true.

Doesn't happen in Holland - people stay out of the fast lanes unless they are overtaking. Can't speak for other European countries but every time I go back it's marvellous the courtesy those people have.

And no, you are not entitled to drive in the right lane unless you are over taking (presuming 80+ speed roads). You are NOT entitled.

  • +4

Why do trucks drive parallel to each other on all lanes on the M5 while under the speed limit?

Why do they speed up above the speed if you decide to over take them, and then they make it is your fault putting everyone in danger?

Why why why why 10 words.

P.S. not all truck drivers are like that.

  • +4

Can manufacturers can solve this problem easily.
I have an idea for a system where if a vehicle is undertaken on the left, a beeping noise is heard. The noise gets louder and faster if the vehicle is undertaken a second time. If the vehicle is undertaken a third time, before the vehicle changes lanes, the vehicle explodes.
    Simple.

    • Yeah but then it's a stationary hazard on the road that will slow absolutely everything down until it's cleared. Better to just program in Autonomous Driving and have it take over, maybe add a condescending AI showing you how to not be an (profanity) as if you're a child

      • The explosion blows it off the side of the road…

  • +3

The worst are the people who come from the left lane into the right just as you are about to go past them. Even though there's no other traffic on the road, they continue to drive slow. Grrr!

  • I’m an a**hole, I also park in handicapped spaces.

  • Because they can.

  • +6

Because everyone going slower then me is an idiot and everyone going faster is a lunatic.

    Obviously

  • +2

was in the right lane, doing the speed limit, as 100m up the road I had to turn right. (you forgot that option BTW) ended up in a road rage incident…..

    • Is the speed limit less than 80?

      • +2

in vic - speed limit 70 or 80 (I cant remember the actual limit, but it was in the suburbs - definately not over 80)

Out of interest whats the relevance? Should I stick in the left and then try to cut across at the last minute and hope theres no traffic behind me and no line in the right lane?) - serious question BTW. Was using the GPS and unfamiliar area, I've found some of them literally tell you to turn right once you're there! and the other gives you plenty of warning. (google maps, sygic, apple - I seem to to swap between them randomly - but thats a whole different thread!)

      • Wouldn't matter if the speed limit WAS 80, since the rule only applies over 80, aka 90kmh+

  • idk maybe some people need to turn right eventually or they know the left lane will end??

  • I like bad drivers - easier to overtake, they stay out of inside lanes, leave the difficult parking spots alone, and provide entertainment by seeing frustrated average drivers being stuck behind them

  • -2

People are not taught to drive - but only to pass their driving test… many people come from countries where they only have scooters and pushys doesnt help
    thats part of the problem.

    • +2

Driving tests in this country are a joke, my grandmother had 2 hours total of practice, just driving around a parking lot with her cousin, before taking the test around Melbourne CBD and passing first time

Somehow we've made cars exponentially safer, but made getting your license exponentially harder. How the hell do you get 120 hours if your parents don't have a car and can't afford $60/hr ($7200 in total) for lessons?

At least my generation could just write fake entries and sit the test whenever to bypass that BS, now it's an app and super hard to fake. No idea why VicRoads is so hellbent on pulling the ladder up behind them

      • Having a license isn't a right its a privilege - if you cant get the experience (hours) stiff shit.. Everyone is in same boat with the required hours I don't have an issue with it. And there's harder places in the world to get your license where you have to get certain amount of hours in all conditions..

… or would you prefer the roads to be full of granny with 2 hours practice then handed a license? its dangerous enough in Box Hill now.

… and super hard to fake. No idea why VicRoads is so hellbent on pulling the ladder up behind them

        surely your taking the piss?

        • I'll give it to you in simple words then because you seem to have missed the point: Current learners and P platers should have to put as much effort into getting their full license as their parents did. Not so hard to understand is it?

Having a license is a privilege, but it's a hell of a lot harder than it was in my dad's day when the test was driving up and back from the local milk bar, yet cars are less dangerous by several orders of magnitude, why?

My granny was about 19 when she got her license in the early 50s, never once had an accident that was her fault. So the roads WERE full of grannies (to be) back then with only 2 hours of experience in solid metal deathtraps

          • @Jolakot:

Having a license is a privilege, but it's a hell of a lot harder than it was in my dad's day when the test was driving up and back from the local milk bar, yet cars are less dangerous by several orders of magnitude, why?

I'll give it to you in simple words then because you seem to have missed the point: Cars maybe less dangerous, but drivers certainly aren't are they?

Drivers are shit these days even with all the 'lane assist' technology etc. There are now more distractions then ever before. Also do you think its cause cars are a touch faster meaning situations happen a little bit quicker to these shit drivers on their phones, changing play lists on spotify in the car at 90kph who have only been taught to pass a lesson not how to drive, or act in any given situation (go do an advanced driving course or 2 and see the differences), and with 100x as many cars on the road with these shit drivers at the helm as back in the dark ages when your dad was doing his?

So the roads WERE full of grannies (to be) back then with only 2 hours of experience in solid metal deathtraps

What, about 100 cars where theres now 1000? LOL

If it was up to me, I'd make it shit loads harder to earn you right to drive.

  • +3

Poor training and driving standards throughout the country. The biggest issues are tailgating, inability to merge, not staying in the left-hand lane (unless overtaking), running red lights, and taking ridiculous chances when coming out of junctions.

  • -4

On a 100kmh freeway I hit cruise control at 101kmh in the far right lane. I do this to avoid cars that are going 95-97kmh and annoys me.

Too bad if you're trying to go 120kmh. Overtake me on the left lane LOL.

    • +2

So you’re probably going an actual speed of around 98 if you have a modern car.

      • -1

I've been under a radar that displays speed and generally 2kmh under. So about 99 if set to 101
Sometimes I hit the cruise at 102 but not more than 103.
I can tolerate cars that may be going 98-99 but any lower than that I'm jumping in the right lane

    • +1

Stay left unless overtaking. Is it really that difficult, or troubling? Do you stay in the right lane even if the other lanes are clear? If so, then you are exactly what I am on about.

      • I'm actually overtaking slow cars in the left lane as they are going 95kmh and I'm going 101kmh. haha

        • That should be fine. I think the question was more about if the other lanes are clear.

    • So you're breaking the law. Well done.

  • +3

Right on Gasman, it’s pretty horrific out there. My wife who is Asian likes to hang in the right hand lane (I tell her to move over) and I also notice lots of Indians do it - wonder if it’s because in lots of Asian/sub-continent countries the left lane is full of motorbikes / farm vehicles / anything else to avoid.

    • Yeah, you may have a point, but from my experience, it's Australians of every variety….old, young, black, brown, white. Driving here is horrific at times; we are often no better than our Asian cousins.

    • +3

For some drivers who are inexperienced (not saying your wife or anyone else is), driving on the left lane actually requires more thought and perhaps skill.
As other drivers merge in and leave the freeway, that driver on the left lane needs to consider more than what's on the speedometer, and often has to slow down/speed up much more than someone one the right. In fact, it might just not be inexperienced drivers.. but "lazy" drivers that are at fault.. Being slow on the right lane allows them to just cruise along until someone tailgates or overtakes them.

The 'keep left unless overtaking' rule is a good, important one. Difficult for police to enforce of course.

  • +3

They’re turning right in 5 km.

    • +3

In a 100km/h zone, if you were stuck behind them doing 90 over that 5km trip, that’s a whole 20 seconds of your life down the drain. Just how time poor are you?

In a 110km/h zone and they were doing 90, it’s 35 seconds extra travelling time over 5km at those speeds

      • -1

It's nothing to do with trip length, it's more about maintaining the flow of traffic, and reducing undertaking which only increases the danger on already dangerous roads.

Have you ever driven in Europe? Here is more akin to SE Asia.

  • +5

i got a different question, why do drivers think it’s okay to go 80/100 on the freeway when it’s clearly got roadworks signs and 40/60 speed limits?

    • My question too! There is a total disregard for speed limits on the M1.

    • Oh, you must have missed that SlavOz post…

      • +1

that post is about randomly braking is it not? I am personally talking about the M1 in Melbourne where it’s like 40 or 60 for like over 5kms and has been for many months. Still see mainly tradies speeding through, ducking and weaving at AT LEAST 80, if not 100.

  • +1

I would like to ask op when people decided that the right lane is an autobahn with unlimited speed?

In vic if i am sitting doing 78-80km/h on a right lane i am fine, but I have noticed people just want to speed and will tailgate until you move.

On the M1 there is a total disregard for road works and speed limits.

  • If you are in the right lane of a three lane highway at 110 the. You should be overtaking someone or doing 120-130 at least. Most people are doing 110 on their Speedo which is 104 on the GPS. Just get left. The far left lane is usually nearly empty and some time the best lane to be in.

    • +1

      or doing 120-130 at least.

So you're saying… I'm fine to sit in the right hand lane as long as I speed. Thanks for your advice!

    • +2

'in the right lane of a three lane highway at 110 the. You should be overtaking someone or doing 120-130 at least'

      iow breaking the law ?

in my car speedo error at 110 was no more than 6kph, so over 116kph indicated would be breaking the law

    • Correction: In a 110 zone the law states you should be overtaking at 110kph.

  • I often see Learner drivers driving 80-90 (if you're lucky) in the middle freeway lanes, and no, it's not busy.
Dunno what percentage they make up of the total group but the full license adult/parent probably does the same lol.

  • -7

I don't understand the speedy Gonzales that love to tailgate people on the right lane. If it is with me, I reduce the speed on purpose. Particularly if the left lane is busy. Gotta love the looks.

    • +1

I just use the emergency lane to overtake on the extreme left

    • +2

I don't understand the slow people that love to sit in the right lane… your supposed to keep left (Hint: that doesnt mean the right lane) unless passing people. Not sure why thats so hard to comprehend for many users in AU then you wont have issues with being tailgated..
      Win/Win.

Most people here would lose their license in a day in other countries or roads like autobahn.

      • -2

If I can see a speedy Gonzales on my rear mirror and I got the chance to delay him safely, I will do it. One of the best driving days I had was when the other car in front and later on my left, noticed the speedy approaching too. We both agreed, implicitly, to keep the same speed for quite some kms, with the speedy swinging and screaming like a mad snake behind. Beautiful and honorific. Maybe I will create a sticker/guild about it

    • And it’s people like you that cause me to cut squished people out of a wreck.

If people polices their own actions instead of causing mayhem to make themselves feel good, I might actually get some sleep at night.

      • Gotta love the negs!

Next time you tailgate me, I will break suddenly so then you can pay all my hospital bills, my new car and yours too.

        See you in court.

        • +1

Tailgating or not, brakechecking is illegal. As is travelling in the right lane (unless you’re overtaking).

If you cause a crash by doing so, you’ll quickly find you will be the one who is paying the others bills. But sure, you fit right in with the douchebags

          • -1

@HelpMeiCantSee: I will say it was a squirrel. Plenty of them around!

            • @takemymoney: Say what you like, particularly if there’s dashcam footage, you’d be screwed. That pattern of behaviour is being cracked down on.

In court, squirrel or no squirrel you would be found negligent. There was a recent ish case involving swerving for a duck and killing a family in the car beside them- the ruling was at speed, it was not a reasonable action and the driver was found CRIMINALLY at fault, as well as civilly ( civil = financially, criminal= you may end up in goal)

There is legal precedent, so for your own good, please rethink your actions!

If you keep it off the Highway, and be a douche on residential streets you’re less likely to cause real harm, so go and enjoy! I’ll be honest, I play with people on Gold Coast suburban streets who hog lanes or have bad behaviour… it can be rather amusing.

              • @HelpMeiCantSee: My point is, tailgating is illegal. If you tailgate and I need to brake, for whatever reason, and you hit me, you are at fault for two reasons: 1. You triggered an aggressive behaviour, 2. You didn't kept distance. I can always said that I just press the brakes because I thought I saw a beaver out of the bush.

        • +1

          Yep, you're a grade-A moron. Congratulations.

          • -1

@barcer: Thanks tailgater, see you on the city double lane!

  • +1

People driving slow has never been an issue for me, I just go with the flow and I get there when I get there. At least it gets me there and not in a graveyard.

  • +1

One of the great mysteries of the universe.

  • +1

    Where's the 'Self Absorbed' option?

  • Because they're… Well, so many reasons. Anyhoo, I have a solution! Remember that early 007 film where a helicopter picked up a carload of baddies using an electro-magnet and then dropped them into the sea? Simple, elegant and more artificial reefs for our fish.

    Bond clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KpMLuWeRh4

  • because it also take a long time for slow drivers to change to the left lane

  • +5

I think those that normally whinge are those doing above the speed limit. Funny how one rule applies and another doesn't……..

    • +2

And? If you’re not currently overtaking, you have no right to use the right hand lane. Police your own actions!

      • +1

Oh he who does not see clearly…….Where did I state that I use the right lane when not overtaking…….Was just making an observation of the type of people that generally whinge….

  • +8

Something tells me OP is an aggresive driver.

  • I used to think it's the speedo thing but even with the GPS, I kept triggering the ding ding ding sound that's telling me I'm speeding and I still have cars trying to run me off the road.

  • +3

Just last night saw someone sitting in right lane under speed limit with an AMBULANCE on their ass, lights flashing. I don't understand how oblivious you can get.

Dude didn't move over to let the ambulance go for probably 2km when we reached a red light. I ended up letting the ambulance through at the lights by moving to the far left.

Granted, also not sure why the ambulance didn't just move to another lane to overtake them.

  • +4

Also just to reiterate what others have said, the speed limit applies whether you're in the left or right (or middle) lanes. You're technically breaking the law attempting to overtake someone and you feel the need to go past the speed limit to do so.

Yes there are people sitting in the right lane going slower than the speed limit. Annoying.
    '
Do I see more people breaking the speed limit when overtaking, absolutely.

    • -1

But what others do is irrelevant. Why do people keep coming back defending with this?

Just worry about yourself and don't drive in the right lane unless you're overtaking.

      • +4

Because statements like "what others do is irrelevant" and "just worry about yourself" aren't quite what you're asking for. If so, you likewise shouldn't care about the speed of the driver in front of you — just worry about yourself.

What you're actually saying is that "what other drivers do is irrelevant…unless it personally inconveniences me". And while a subsection of the community couldn't care less, another will.

Now for the record I absolutely stick left wherever possible, do consider it a safety issue, generally let people pass, and often speed to overtake. But I absolutely will gladly piss someone off and perform the slowest speed-limit-meeting overtake I can when encountering someone who very obviously thinks the overtaking lane is the speeding lane.

  • +3

Entitlement. Usually nothing more. Sometimes a “well I’m going the speed limit so I’ll stop anyone else from speeding” heroism too. Bunch of a-holes.

  • +1

You left one choice of the list - people new to the area unfamiliar with the landmarks locals use who need to turn right sometime in the next kilometre - especially in Adelaide where an attempt to intrude in the personal space of someone in the other lane, especially if accompanied by using the winking lights on the corners more properly used to remind other drivers where you just came from, is regarded as an insult demanding at least the sacrifice of your first-born.

  • +1

My theory? There’s usually less traffic in that lane so people can bimble along at their leisurely speed because it’s “nice and quiet”. They’re usually completely oblivious. Or they’re planning on turning right in approximately 10km 🙄.

  • -1

    Just to annoy you!
Seriously, do you travel way over the speed limit?

    • There is a real problem when people insist on over- speeding to save half a min of total journey time, and prefer tailgating over maintaining safe distance.

  • It’s either old people who have no idea what’s going on around them or people who didn’t get their licence in Australia.

I’ve even noticed Learners with an instructor sitting in the right lane. Even though it’s not a law unless over 80km/h there are instructors who don’t understand it’s an unwritten rule in Australia to keep left whenever possible.

  • What about international drivers of oriental descent?

  • +3

    Follow up question.
Why do impatient people need to tailgate the people doing the right thing on inside lane (even 5km above the limit at times)…
Top OzBargainers drafting for fuel efficiency perhaps?

    • A cop once told me off for tailgating him. Lucky I din't get a ticket, he was more interested in getting donuts and coffee (no joke) at the same shopping centre we both turned into. Worst part of it was, I didn't think I was tailgating, the Mrs disagreed with me
