I think you might also be able to pick up and save delivery fees. Would be good for those that picked up the HP micro servers n30/ n40.

    • Am I able to pick up my online order from one of the Centre Com stores? At the current time Centre Com

Online does NOT offer in-store pickup for online orders. If you would like to place an order for pickup, please contact your local store directly.
      http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/locations.php

      • mmm.. i assumed because it's in the catalogue they should also have these in store thus the pick-up option. Maybe should have phrased it better.

      • Ummm, their website says the $99 drives are available at several stores. Are you saying this is wrong?

  • how's this compare to the WD green drives?? Do they all turn off when idle?

    • -1

If turning On & Off -reduces- the drive's life,
what's the value of all the saved Elec'y cost?

      • if anything i thought turning on & off will improve drive life span

        • +2

Believe it or not its the spin-up and spin-down cycles that reduce lifespan because rapid change of state applies significantly more material stress. Its the same reason why long-haul aircraft are expected to go longer without maintenance than their short-haul buddies that perform a lot more take-offs/landings. Just FYI.

IMO, WD is better harddrive than seagate.

      • The only HD that has failed between my and my mate's 20 HDDs is the one seagate he bought. The rest are all WD and they're all still going strong. Some are approaching 5 years old but they're mainly used as backups and are hardly plugged in or running.

If the discussion were about homeopathy or acupuncture, I suspect you guys would be pretty dismissive of these kinds of personal anecdotes. I'm curious what it is about the issue of HDD brand reliability that makes techies revert to the same sort of thinking as adherents to quackery.

        • Pure comedy gold Jabba, well said! :)

      • It really depends on your luck, I've had 3 WD HDD fails last year. 2 Caviar Black and 1 raptor. They do have 5 years warranty but sending them to Singapore/Malaysia for RMA is such a pain and costs about $30/drive.

    • Any HDD's Power-Saving features can be remedied with this useful app:

      http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/

Writes a blank text file to any partition at any interval you like. Incredibly useful.

Limit of 1 ruins this for me…

    • +1

Yeah, I want 4 new drives for my N40L. Prefer them to be identical drives.

      • +11

Be careful, drives from the same batch tend to fail at the same time. If you plan to raid 1 them try to get different ones…

    • +1

      I would've been okay even with 2.

  • $9 Delivery to Gold Coast

    • It is $20 to Albury, dang!

    I'm missing PricesEngine (again)

Even though it's been gone for like 2 years, I've kept that site on my speed dial and I check it weekly. The deals were just SOOOO good…
      :(

  • +9

Incease quantity limit to 2 please.

Really 5900 RPM ??? Never seen that before

  • 5900 sounds pretty slow to me. I'd much rather get a cheap 7200RPM drive.

    • a 2T is normally for storage… not OS drive

      • +4

True. I retract my comment. The extra money saved by getting a slower storage drive could be used to offset the price of an SSD for the OS drive. :-)

    • You can consider a Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000. Fairly old model though (2010) but it is 2TB (7200RPM) for around $125.

      • -3

Hitachi wont be around much longer, best sticking with the top 2.

Last time I bought a hdd from CentreCom in Bendigo on special, they added an extra bit to the advertised price to cover shipping charge - even though both the drive and I were in the store at that time. Apparently the Bendigo store has the right to increase the price over the advertised price. Just be aware if you are in Bendigo.

    • +1

Also from Bendigo, they always claim they are online prices only and make you pay extra

  • That three-step credit card verification thing during checkout was a surprise. CBF, paypal kthx.

  • +4

For credit card order, you have to go through 3 steps

    http://i.imgur.com/aVper.jpg

I have never seen this crazy process just to order online by credit card.
I see no point to do this as credit card is under fraud protection anyway (even for merchant, I believe).

What a hassle - considering cancelling an order….

    • Could just use PayPal or If you're a true bargain hunter use bank transfer and save that 2% :)
I think they use it to reduce credit card fraud because the bank instantly reverses money on a credit card since It's their money but the same doesn't apply for a Debit Card since It's yours (45 Day Wait)

      • +2

yeah, Bargain price it is but credit card use sometimes has its benefit over paying by cash.

I should have opted for PayPal, not CC. For those thinking to pay by credit card, I recommend to opt for PayPal (and still you can use credit card for paypal payment anyway) to avoid this crazy cc order authorisation process.

Anyway, I have done this crazy process and hopefully no dramas over this product and purchase process.
        Waiting for order confirmation.

    • really????

  • I bought It and for those wondering It's a 3 Year warranty since It's a low powered drive.

    • Also note there's more to manufacturer warranty than length - anyone done an return directly with Seagate recently and know what the current process is?

WD expect you to ship your locally-purchased drive to Malaysia at your own expense, which really sucks if you're outside the one-yearish implied warranty period with the retailer.

      • you shouldn't have to do that under Australian law

  • +3

I just walked into Hawthorn store, and was asked how many i wanted.
So not sure the 1 limit is enforced. Maybe online only.

2tb wd were $119. Couldnt justify $20 more.

  • $20 del bugger, same price as picking one up from MSY (well $2 cheaper), and only one allowed.

  • Green drives suck in my opinion. I have a WD 3TB drive which turned out to be a green one and the damn thing always goes to sleep and takes ages to scan/read and be accessible again.

  • +2

I bought 2T WD usb for $98 at harvey yesterday , and can open them up and use as internal :D

    • is it still $98? im gonna grab two if so :D

    • I want to do this as well but my hard drive is for the microserver on 7*24 running. So I don't want to lose warranty in case the drive goes wrong.

      • that's right be aware opening up a cased USB HDD will probs void the warranty

  • I just picked up a 2TB HDD from MSY for $99. It is a Samsung but the label has also got Seagate and Barracuda Green written on it. It is a ST2000DL004 (Seagate Model) / HD204UI (Samsung Part Number).

It doesn't appear on MSY's website or parts PDF.

    • so which shop do you go to? dunno if it's avaliable in Sydney

      • Balcatta, WA

      • I dropped an email to Ultimo branch and they just replied saying no they don't have this model:(

    • Samsungs HD204UI is now the Seagate ST2000DL004…
      http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18383103
EDIT: hah.. it pays to refresh.

I have two of the Samsungs HD204UI: I never get below 100MB/s when transferring to each other.
Great speed for a 5,400RPM drive.

      • that's some awesome speed dude. I'm lucky to get above 30mb on my seagate pocket 500gb drive to/from my internal

    • That's a good deal, it's not on their website or parts list.

  • -1

I have a couple of the 5900rpm drives - they blow IMHO.

    VERY VERY SLOW.

  • +1

CENTRECOM …. NO more for me

  • thanks for the post, but i've tried seagate's hard disk so many time. and it always dies really fast. dnt really recommend ppl to get it

    • +1

I guess different people have different experiences.
Few years ago I bought 2 computers with 6 WD drives (3 each) within 18months all 6 had died, and 1 of the replacement drives died. Both computers were in a aircon room. I have replaced them all with seagates.
I have had SG die, but no where near at the rate WD die. Last 6 months I've had 3 die, one 4 year SG and 2x 1Tb 2 year old WDs.

  • Not a fan of the Centrecom online store. The staff are pretty good, but the order process takes a while.

  • Thanks OP! Awesome price

  • Why.. why I order 2 WD Green 2TB at $135 each including the shipping from Mwave… but.. anyway this one is limited 1 per customer.

  • Walked into the Clayton store and picked one up. They seemed to be quite strict on the 1 per customer policy though.

  • Hi

I'm a newbie to this. I have a Astone AP 300 media player that supports internal SATA hard drive up to 2.0TB (3.5 inch).

Is it possible to install this Seagate drive in media player. Please help.

    Thanks

    • Yes, I can't see why not

  • +1

It arrived today already during lunch time! I ordered yesterday evening - gosh it was quick. Cheers

  • Ordered tuesday, still sitting on "processing"… not particularly fast! What were everyone else's delivery times like

  • What is this, they just shipped it out today….

  • The price has gone back up again.
