  • Do I read correctly that this needs an extra "garmin edge cycling computer" to actually enable the smart features?

When your speed varies, Garmin Varia UT800 adjusts too. When paired with compatible Edge cycling computers, the UT800 adjusts brightness to give the lumens you need for up to 4 hours, so you can ride with confidence.

    • It generally sounds dodgy while reading the description:

Automatically adjusts to ambient light conditions, speed and ride profile to extend battery life
So smart, it can adjust to ambient light and speed to save battery life

Please tell me again how smart that thing is about the "ambient light conditions" to save the battery.

    • Probably.
It's proprietary ANT+, so it may work with other non-garmin computers, but it seems unlikely.
If you want speed-controlled brightness, you definitely need it paired to an Edge computer.
I'm not 100% sure if the ambient-light-condition brightness is controlled. I've always hoped it was controlled via the sunrise/sunset times info that could be figured out in any Edge computer, but I strongly suspect it's just based on the light-sensor that's in the 830 and 1030 models, which normally just controls their backlight brightness.

Cheers OP bought one to match up with the Edge head unit and radar rear light.

  • Can anyone who owns one of these provide a quick review?

I would be commuting to work which is about 38km one way.
Would this be suitable, or are the 'smart' features worth the money ?
For context I currently own a Knog PWR Trail 1000lm but its last days are approaching.

I dont own one but as somebody that rides often at night time, I'd prefer to have full manual control of what my headlight is doing rather than what it thinks it should be doing.

e.g. If Im doing a 1 hour ride, I'll want the brightness at maximum as I dont care about battery life.

      • You can manually control what setting you want, albeit through your garmin edge headunit.

      • Is there a particular manual headlight that you would recommend?

I've started riding more in the evenings and the cheap $30 headlight I got from Amazon just isn't cutting it in terms of brightness.

    • Own one and also don’t use smart features. Just manually choose the mode I prefer. Ironically in many reviews the smart features reduce the battery life due to being in constant connection.

Besides that great powerful light, I got it mainly due to it being tucked away neatly under my edge unit.

Great price. If you use a Garmin Edge head unit, then these are great light. I have one, and have now ordered a second for my partner.

I have one. I like it for its form factor and attachment (goes underside of the garmin out-front mount). The connected features are pretty pointless and I only connect it with my head unit so I can see the battery level. I think you also get an alert on the garmin when the battery is low - I'm not sure as I only use it for morning rides and I switch it to blinking mode when its sufficiently bright. For night riding, I use a beefier unit as the battery life on this at full brightness is just over an hour.

Cheers, op. Have picked one up as I needed a second Garmin mount and a second lamp, so being able to swap my Edge and my light between bikes will make life easier.

  • Anyone know of a good deal currently or to look out for on Garmin Edge headunits? My 510 is showing signs of failing soon
