Do we need everything to have some kind of multimedia device connected to it? Give your senses some rest.

    • +24

      Make me!

      • +1

        do they take precscriptions?

        • +2

You have to take it to a glasses shop to do it. I inquired at Bupa Optical and was quoted circa $350 for my prescription. They said they had done it before on a few pairs of various Bose glasses and noted you need the really thin/light lens due to the frame/weight balance/etc. I can't remember the details but they noted that one of the three customers had gone back and forth repeatedly due to issues with it… all up, I decided it wasn't worth the effort.

          • @jace88: i heard "re-glazing" sometimes cost more than a new one;
unless people really like their frames of course..

          • @jace88: agreed - I have multifocal transitions - which go dark in sunlight - but are also prescription reading and distance glasses

if these fancy frames only suit thin sunglass opticals due to the existing extra weight (heavy!?), that may be why they're on sale - i.e. not suitable for most peebles

Why the hell would Bose make plain old shades? Luxotica has 90% of that market captured already.

You make it sound like you're forced to listen to music 24/7 on these

      • +4

Wow… I didn't know so many brands belonged to the same company.

The company is probably worth buying stock in if they have a virtual monopoly

Well, you could just not buy it?

Like beer drinking hats. Seems like a good idea 💡

    • +7

      Old man yells at cloud.

  • -2

The bass is apparently horrendous on these

    • +39

I don't imagine any sunglasses sound would have amazing bass.

      • I tried these on at JB, they sounded as bad as the price. Better to get $10 cabled earbuds, or AirPod v2s, or the Sony XM4's.

        • Not the same purpose.

          • -4

            @ShouldIBuyIt: Sure they are.
Buy a decent $100 sunnies, and $200 AirPods… and both options will perform the same purpose. Except, you will likely get a better experience, and pay less money going the alternative. Even when these Bose Alto's are on discount, you can get the others on discount too. A stationwagon and an SUV might be "different" but you sure as sh it can compare them.

            • @Kangal: Those are bone connection headphones, hence not the same purpose than airpods (I mean sure the purpose is to hear music, but also hear outside world…)
If you really want to compare like for like, then you have to compare with the shokz brand for e.g. except I don't think you can comfortably wear sunglasses at the same time than shokz. Those Bose sunglasses fill a niche market. You are obviously not targeted.

            • @Kangal: Never read so many words to basically agree with him that yes, they're different lol.

    • +3

The demo pair I tried in a shop had surprisingly good body for a pair of sunglasses.
They're not meant to replace earphones or subwoofers so they're not going to be all doof-doof.

      • +2

I tried some at JB just the ones and was surprisingly pleased with the audio quality too. I had reasonably low expectations, but in the 1 minute I spent with them they seemed like something I could see myself using if I was out and about. Being sunglasses you're going to wear them about where if you don't have isolating ear or headphones you'll have background noise anyway, and these seemed like they'd be respectable enough for such a scenario.

  • +15

If there’s a set of sunnies where you can see people naked I wouldn’t mind that. I skip this one!

    • You pervet.

      • +14

        Bondi Pervet.

    • +15

You must live somewhere nice. I wouldn’t wear those in my neighbourhood

      • Hopefully they're not a primary school teacher 🙃

        • Does it make a difference if they're a woman in her 20s ?

  • +1

    Interesting concept..

  • +3

Got to try these at jb long time ago, bone conducting was interesting back when it was a fad with phones, ut I'm pretty sure people can hear your music if it's loud enough or in a quiet environment.

Honestly at $150 it's a better buy than your basic run of the mill luxotica shades which would sell for more.

  • Shouldnt buy as it has a lot of faulty. Try to gg on bose community to see what is the problem of this product. Ur guys gonna change ur mind after reading.

    • +3

      TLDR?

    • +1

Owned my pair since launch and it's never skipped a beat.

  • Older model

  • +1

What purpose do these serve? Genuinely curious. Working outdoors and you don't want the intrusiveness of buds?

    • +1

I mean these are essentially wireless buds in a different form factor, you don't have to stick anything in your ears, plus added functionality as sunglasses and they are in the same price range.

Good buy if the disadvantages like sound quality and isolation are not important to you.

      • +1

Errr.. But like you don't wear sunglasses at night or inside, so you're limited in its use. So with that in mind, plus sound issues, why would you buy them?

        • +1

They're $150,buy them as cheap shades and get headphones as bonus.

Wayfarers cost more than these on sale, why buy those?

          • -2

@krisspy: Why do you sound like a pushy salesperson? Just tell him not to buy them!

        • Don’t buy them if they are of no use to you.

        • +2

you mean YOU don't wear sunglasses at night or inside

        • For when you do need to wear sunglasses.

        • +1
    • Work places where your not allowed to wear headphones

      Motorbikes

      Cyclists

  • They're half price for a reason. You can probably pickup a good deal on Google Glass too.

Got this for my edc, because I think Jason Bourne and John Wick are documentaries.

    • +2

They'd go perfectly with the Knipex Cobra XS 100mm 87 00 100 Pliers.

    • +1

Wonder how well these hold charge

      • +1

        5 point something hours easy.

  • +5

We have sold these for years. Not a big seller but not a bad product.

Allows for music & calls and also listen to everything else going on around you, not blocking out noise. Some people fit their own prescription lenses too.

The Alto are an old model and been around 4-5 years now. Current offering is Tempo, Tenor & Soprano.

    • Prescription lenses would be great. I wonder how much they'd cost?

      • +1

I was quoted $350ish from Bupa to get it made/installed. The staff said they'd done a few prescription fits and noted you need really thin/light lens and some people reported the weight imbalance issues causing it to keep falling on their nose/feeling uncomfortable. I'm sure it'll vary person to person but once you factor in the purchase price, you may as well just get a nice pair of glasses/frame which you can use for longer instead which is what I ended up doing.

      • +1

I think I got mine from specsavers around $180 or $200

  • These are only rated IPX2 water resistant. Mine stopped charging after a few months, pretty sure the day was a bit too humid for them.

    • Did you contact bose? Heard their customer service is pretty good.

  • Only s/m available now at price

  • +1

Oos now, just as I was trying to price match 😔😔

    • back in stock

      • Yeah got some before. Thanks :)

  • Stop recharging after 5 months. Easy to return to Myer. But for Bose you would expect a longer lasting product. Also everything works off one button only.

    • Bose these-days isn’t what it used to be. Return rate is very high.

      • How do you know that?

  • +8

Picked up a pair around Nov 2020, using my Qantas points as I wasn’t prepared to spend $300 of my actual cash. I have a pair of airpod pro’s for comparison, and carry these around as my primary sunglasses. Here’s some of my thoughts:

    • Not great for running. This was what I thought I would mainly be using it for, but when you factor in the wind, a lot of it gets drowned out. Also as others have pointed out, the bass is not amazing, so again not a great feature for running.
    • Tends to shine for gardening (which is a solid 2-3 hours per week) walking from the car to work, and listening to music when I’m not supposed to. Listened to the last test match while attending the wedding of an in-law. Came in clutch.
    • Can make phone calls - No issues with people being unable to hear me
    • Perfect for podcasts given the issue of no bass
    • Number of times my AirPods were at home, these were always on hand to save the day
    • Has just the one button making input a problem
    • No issues with battery and I charge mine most days and wear everyday
    • Not for the beach or pool, the speakers are clearly not water resistant.
    • For $150, if you’re curious, they would be a recommend. Just keep your expectations in check.
    • +4

You convinced me at "Listened to the last test match while attending the wedding of an in-law."
