      is this code on CR?

      • Yes, its listed on CR

Does this apply to concierge credits?

    • Will their still be stock though..

      • That's my concern too…

Might just buy it and go with a lower cashback.

      • Sold out now. Bit surprised it's gone.

  • +1

Great price and can highly recommend it.

Only negative thing in regards to the CCWGTV is the fact it has a measly 8gb and you can't run much on it without running out of space.

    • This could be a major negative! Thanks!!!!

      • +1

Wifi consistently cuts out as well. It's a known problem. I only found out when it happened to me and tried googling to find a solution

        • r u using neochef?

          • @hopper: no idea what that is?
i googled it then, an LG inverter microwave?
No but i do have a panasonic inverter microwave but I have a wifi mesh in my room next to said chromecast

            • @Da dpG: My Chromecast Ultra drops out next to my panasonic microwave

              • @Genepi: yeah but when you're using it correct?
mine is in my room with a dedicated wifi mesh

                • @Da dpG: Yes when they're both in use at the same time. And notably the microwave is right next to the kitchen tv chromecast.

Using a USB C hub you can expand the storage with a USB, SD Card or Hard drive just FYI.

      • +3

Having a powered USB C hub will help alleviate this problem - but you're looking at spending another $40-50-60 to fix this issue.

There are rumours a new version is coming out sometime in the future as the code is showing in dev programs, so may be worth waiting as the space is a pretty serious issue.

        • I bought a powered hub on Aliexpress for $25 that fixed the issue, but yeah, it’s an extra hassle and expense you have to factor in.

          • @sepa: Hi sepa, which powered hub did you get? Most don't work apparently…..

            • +1

@billy_bob: I bought this hub in a recent ozbargain deal and it works great with the Chromecast with Google TV.

            • @billy_bob: Just checked my order (bought last Oct) and the link has expired. Edit: I posted a link to another one that looks almost identical, but the hmdi port was in a different position, maybe the chips are different too, so, sorry, I can't vouch for a Ali cheapie that I can guarantee will work.

            • +1

@billy_bob: I ordered this one for $17 that does the trick - Amazon, delivery was real fast.

Has passthrough USB-C power. I stuck in a thumbdrive and it's good to go.

              https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07ZCWQ89L/

              Enjoy!

              • @Droz: Thanks Droz, will give it a shot. Did you need to upgrade to a bigger power adapter or was the standard CGTV power plug ok?

                • +1

@billy_bob: I think I'm just using the standard one, actually. I have more powerful ones too somewhere, but I haven't had a problem (with this particular USB-C Hub, anyway. I guess it depends if you're using a portable HDD as opposed to a SSD or little USB stick?).

I've only got the USB stick plugged in, nothing else.

                  • @Droz: Worth getting one with ethernet and plugging in. Makes it very reliable

                    • +1

@G-rig: I did get another cheap hub that had ethernet, but it doesn't work with the CC - the ones that do are expensive, and the ones that have Gigabit ethernet as opposed to 100MB are very expensive.

Anecdotally, I haven't experienced any wifi problems with the CC, so that's interesting that others have.

I guess I'll keep an eye out.

I'm really still looking for the perfect Android TV device - the Vodafone TV I bought years ago is on the fritz, the Shield is too expensive, and the other ones around - Fire products from Amazon, for instance - are too locked down?

Waiting for that golden generic Android TV with a bit more RAM and a bit more storage, and a few ports.

                      • @Droz: Cheers for elaborating on that, tend to agree. There are plenty of those cheap hubs around but seems like not many are really that good especially for dual screen @60hz etc. Would be nice if the Google TV came with a micro SD slot.. or better yet Google should make the ethernet adaptor a bit better and include USB slots

      • how does this work? got a link?

bought one, btw - nearly bought one yesterday at full ticket

        • +4

It's mostly plug and at for adding storage, keyboard, mouse etc. The storage you just have to format the device as expandable storage, it's technically an android device so it's all fully capable.

Here's a guide on some of the things you can do.

The USB C hub needs to have power pass through (PD) so it can power the CCGT and the peripherals. Unfortunately there aren't many cheap ones, but think of a good USB-C hub as an investment for all the USB-C devices these days :)

          • +2

@Castcore: They are not cheap but not too expensive either:

USB C Hub with Led Light, 4 USB3.0 Port and 1 PD Port with 100W Power Delivery
            $17.99 Delivered with Prime

            • @bio: Oh nice, my quick search didn't find any under $25. Just note that some may not work for various reasons the first USB-C hub I bought didn't work on CCGT.

              • @Castcore: I can't vouch for it as I don't own one but some reviews mention that it works with GCGT.

Also an SD card reader would be nice.

            • @bio: The price is reasonable, may as well get one with ethernet too though. I got the Google TV ethernet adaptor, doesn't help with expanding storage thou.

    • +1

I don't see onboard storage 8GB as a performance issue.

For example the Vodafone TV boxes have similar specs.

      https://ausdroid.net/2018/06/04/vodafone-tv-ausdroid-review/…

Ultra reliable. Just use it within the designed specs.

    • Sony's Bravia TV's have 16Gb of internal storage for Google TV. That seems a bit more reasonable.

  • Nice

  • Does this auto refresh rate change?

  • +1

how does it compare with Firestick 4k max?

  • Thanks OP; got one.

  • +1

Great device. Loving the voice enablement and consolidated homescreen. Got it for $79 from the mydeal deal

    • +2

I wish there was a way to turn off Google Assistants voice when using voice search, I don't need it to tell me that it's showing me the results, I can see it haha. Also wish it would auto exit the assistant screen overlay, but no you have to back out of it each time to get to the results.

    • I got it for around $78 shipped using a new user coupon and latitudepay. Still tempting to cancel as it hasn't shipped and there's cashback.

  • Thanks OP, got 2

  • What's the difference between this and regular chromecast without TV in the name?

    • +1

This doesn't require a device to cast from. With the regular Chromecast, you launch the show/movie on your tablet/phone and then cast to the TV, this one has it's own interface and you can install apps (Netflix, Stan etc and most are preloaded) and just play using the remote.

      • So can I cast to this from my phone, or is it strictly from its own interface with the remote?

        • +2

You can do either. I find it more convenient to use the interface but you have the option

        • +4

100% get this over the other Chromecast imo. its definitely worth it.

You pretty much get Android TV + Chromecast capabilities

    • +1

This one supports 4k. I don't think they sell 4k one in Australia separately without the Google TV.

  • +3

Just beware that if you're connecting this to an older surround sound system that only supports Dolby Digital 5.1 (and not Dolby Digital + / Atmos), depending on your setup you may be stuck with stereo sound from certain apps (e.g. Netflix, Disney+). The Chromecast won't transcode the DD+ signal from these apps into DD (unlike Apple TV and I believe the FireTV stick), so if your AV gear doesn't support DD+, you'll get stereo. If your TV can do the transcoding, this may not be an issue.

    • I have found this.

Is there any way around it?

      • +2

Not that I'm aware of, apart from upgrading your other devices so that they support DD+. I spent days trying to solve this and I eventually gave up and bought an Apple TV. Apart from this issue, it was a good device for the money.

  • These are great. I use one instead of WebOS on the C1.

  • +2

Im not sure about these. Mine was great at first but it is getting very laggy, in particular the remote control. Even tried reseting back to default and then adding all my apps again. Still laggy. Bascially my amazon fire 4k runs rings around this.

    • One of mine has gone this way. I wondered if it was batteries or dirt in the controller.

    • my remote became really laggy as well. I have isolated the problem to the remote itself, and changing battery/factory reset doesn't help. Sometimes I have to pressed the button a few times to get it moving.

When I noticed the remote is laggy, I used my samsung tv remote to control the chromecast and it's working fine.

  • can you plug these things into a monitor that has USB?

    • +1

      HDMI is required.

    • Get a HDMI USB converter and it should be fine.

    • might mean to power via the monitor usb? Or does monitor not have hdmi 🤷🏻‍♂️

If focused on the power, I Imagine it would take power from monitor USB port but will depend on your monitor I guess, can you charge other devices or phones using it?

  • I am happy with my device that I got for $60. My dad understands how to use it and it runs channels from Ant store no problem so viewing Chinese live channels is fine.

    • What device is that? I'm using an unblocktv from singapore for chinese live channels, which is OK but always expect it to stop working one day.

      • +1

This device. You just have to read the chinese forums on when to update and input "community" codes.

        • Any link please? Can do on any Android TV?

  • +3

Have one and it's fine. Use it for Plex, Streaming FTA (i.e. ABC, SBS, 7Plus, etc.), Kodi and Netflix. So far haven't encountered any slowdown or RAM issues however I did encounter the limitation on the audio codecs. Mine is connected to a Yamaha Aventage receiver and it shows everything as multi-channel PCM. I can live with it but in the future might go for an Nvidia shield so I can get all the codecs (DTS-HD and DolbyTrueHD, Dolby ATMOS).

    • Do you stream over wifi or did you get the (or a) ethernet power adaptor?

      • I use WiFi, that being said I run a Google Nest Wifi with two additional points so I have strong WiFi everywhere.

  • +2

waiting for the incoming Chromecast later this year since I don't need 4k. it was mentioned to be cheaper than this version :D

  • +3

Maybe a specialised usage case. But one "disadvantage" of the Chromecast TV is you require a USB- C connection and AC adapter. I still use an old Gen 2 Chromecast when I travel so that I can just run it off the USB ports built into most TVS found in accomodation and not have to find a nearby powerpoint as the old one requires much less power.

Use a Chromecast TV at home though :)

    • I just tried powering mine with my Xiaomi 16,000 mAh battery and it worked fine! So that is an option for travelling :)

  • I can't buy it online. Getting the message that they are only available for in store purchases. Anyone else having this issue ? Breaks the deal - no 10% discount code (and no upsized cash rewards later).

  • Thanks OP. Got one.

  • Anyone else having the issue with buying online ? Seems not ? Guessing nobody is buying in store ?

  • +2

    Price jacked to $99 now

    • Bugger. Ozbargained. I think they blocked online purchases before jacking the price.

    • Yeah my cart updated to the increased price as I was processing

  • This thing has been amazing plugged into my projector. But it won't run plugged into the USB out of it, needs to be plugged into wall socket.

  • I have a PowerPoint behind my tv with USB power, does anyone know if that is sufficient to power this device? Don’t have space to plug an extra adapter into!

  • Argh! Had it in cart at the discounted price, went to process and put in card details and it popped up it charged $89!! How frustrating

    • If you have latitudepay they will occasionally send out $20 discounts. Can use at HN or mydeal. The latter of which has $10 new user coupons but delivery fees.

  • Does this work with an usb c ethernet adapter?

    • Yep, gotta have power pass through tho because you still need to power the device off the USB C port.

  • i dont see the chromecast on goodguys anymore, did they take it down?

  • +1

The deal that broke The Good Guys. Congrats to those that managed to buy one. It's a great little unit for that price.

  • +2

    Dammit, was waiting until 6pm

  • +1

Love mine like chocolate. Paired with Kodi and Real Debrid, this is da bomb.

  • +1

I'm not a fan, I've had a bunch of issues with mine.
    - stuttering with 4k@60Hz particuarly with dark content
    - wifi disconnecting intermitently, I need to manually go into the settings to reconnect
    - notification warning wifi has disconnected when it hasn't
    - content is dark, i.e. in direct comparison with my 4k chromecast content streaming with the GTV is noticibly darker for some reason.

    • These units have known issues connecting to wifi on 5ghz - have to change modem channel settings. I haven’t had any dark content issues. Might be poor wifi though stuttering is more likely frame rate matching - try 50hz for Aussie and UK content, 24hz for Netflix and movies.

      • Yeah I've been playing around with the framerates, I might try 2.4ghz then though, there should be enough bandwidth since nothing else really uses it except the other google bits.

From my googling seems a common issue, happens with all content, including when I lock the tv and content to 4k@60hz (I might try 1080p@60hz if thats an option maybe) so the frame rate should be in step. 24hz!?!? That's a little low haha I've tried down to 30 but it persists.
I think it might just be an issue with the firmware/processing, I've run seen similar issues with rasberri pi's on other tvs, though I don't have one anymore to test with this.

        • In general, the frame rate should match the video frames per second. Aussie TV and catchup is usually 50hz, a good all-round choice if you are having problems, Netflix movies are 24hz (actually 23.976hz but 24hz is close enough and will only produce a skip once a minute or so) though some content is 60 fps. If your TV is HD, choose 1080. If your TV is 4K check the HDMI port settings, and your HDMI cable. Your TV's compatibility could be the problem.

    • Recommend the ethernet adaptor (not that I had any issues with wifi)
