Putting this out for those looking to travel to thailand for their awareness.

As soon as I read "Thailand has recorded more than 22,000 deaths and over 2.46 million cases of Covid-19 as of February 23, 2022." I stopped reading. We are still in February 10, 2022 right?

      • Likely a typo of either feb 2 or feb 3. But it remains that going to thailand or many other countries for that matter is still not a good idea.

        • Yup that would have been the case indeed. Cheers mate.

If you look at it as a per capita comparison then Thailand is doing considerably better than us. You'd think the death rate is due to the lack of vaccination? I'd imagine the data is also probably even more under-reported than in Australia but at worst, it'd be much of a muchness i'd think.

        Thailand
        Population: 70.1M
        2.52M cases (3.6%) and 22,344 deaths (0.03%)

        Australia
        Population 25.7M
        2.81M cases (13.6%) and 4373 deaths (0.02%)

Pretty sure Thailand was hammered by Delta and Omicron whereas we were only hammered by Omicron which explains the higher death rate. Thanks for sharing these stats. My only concern re travelling would be getting the appropriate medical treatment if I needed it. The risk of catching covid is probably much of a muchness here vs overseas.

Australia has the second highest rates of infection on the planet…. May also mean we have the most testing on the planet.

      • To put it into perspective:

        Covid deaths per million population
        Australia: 172
        NSW, Australia: 198
        Thailand: 321
        Victoria, Australia: 332

        • Point i was making with my post is. I don't doubt we could still get covid even staying in Aus.

Its what happens if you are overseas and you contract covid. If you need hospital treatment. You could be up for thousands in med bills if you don't have insurance. At least in Aus we have medicare.

The country you went to could lockdown and you could get stranded. Has happened in the past.

          • @xoom: Yeah, I agree there is a risk of testing positive at some point and being forced into hospital/quarantine, with your return to Australia possibly being delayed and your holiday being ruined.

Covid insurance is currently mandatory for Thailand, but I'd imagine that testing positive and dealing with insurance companies and everything else would be very stressful.

@xoom: Golden rule of travel is to never travel without insurance. If you can't afford it, save a little more until you can.
Also, depending on which scorecard you look at, Thailand and Australia rank similarly, near or in the top 10 in terms of health care.
If you have insurance then generally, repatriation will be covered. If you need in country medical care then you'll be pretty well looked after in Thailand i'd think. Have a look at some of those hospitals in Bangkok, they look like resorts with the latest cutting edge equipment!
In terms of getting stranded. You're going to have at least a day to get out but realistically, something bad would be building over the days/weeks and you'd see it on the news everyday. Maybe don't wait until the sh*t hits the fan, just get out. Worst case scenario, fly to Mexico where they have been open and unrestricted for a long time and then get your PCR there and fly back to Australia.

Preaching to the choir. Shame not everyone buys travel insurance whenever they go overseas. Its taken overseas gov to require it and actually check that traveller has it. Some countries requiring specific covid coverage with at least $35k to 40k cover.

What happens if the return flight is cancelled, due to border closures or volcanic clouds or Jetstar going bust? As the return flight is "free", no refunds, and chargeback is not possible?

What happens if the return flight is cancelled, due to border closures

A distinct posibility depending on case numbers over there.

      You could end up stranded.

But more importantly if you have to rebook, you would have to pay the fare difference I.e. the full price!!
