Entry Level Gaming PC - i5-11400, 16GB, RX6500XT $999 + Delivery ($0 MEL C&C) @ BPC Technology

820

Quite possibly the cheapest entry level gaming PC I've seen for a while? Happy to delete if its not a deal. Great for a kids gaming rig (or even just office PC with some light gaming?)

I'd say its probably a decent Minecraft/Fortnite/Roblox rig easily? I don't know much about the 6500XT. Note it does have a small SSD, but decent mechanical so factor that in for install sizes.

They have a $99+ free shipping deal on, but it excludes gaming PC's I believe.

Part list:
Intel Core i5 11400 6-Core LGA 1200 2.6GHz CPU Processor
MSI H510M-A PRO mATX Motherboard - 2x DDR4, 1x PCI-E 4.0 x16, 4x SATA3, 2x M.2, 2x USB 3.2, HDMI 2.0b, VGA, Micro ATX
Kingston Fury Beast 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16 DDR4
MSI Radeon RX 6500 XT MECH 2X 4G OC Video Card
GIGABYTE GSM2NE3 M.2 NVMe Solid State Drive 256GB

              AMD Relive isn't terrible.

I'm not familiar with either of the software so I'll take your word for it but looking at the notes, it doesn't mention that XT cards are compatible. And if its anything like their AMD encoder, hasn't been updated in a long time.

I'm seeing second hand 1650 Super cards for $250 on Ebay. I bet I could do better if I spent more than 20 seconds.

You're not wrong. No doubt when dipping into the second hand market its easier to get better parts but then you're taking on the risk of using hardware that you can't guarantee the history of. I personally don't buy second hand PC parts for myself or my kids, granted they will get my hand-me-downs.

But I'm focussing on what you can get for sub-$1k as a prebuilt. If you could buy the PC without the GPU, and you're willing to risk second hand gear, then there is even more value to be had with this PC

              • @Cyphar: AMD Relive is the software you interact with to use the AMD encoder. If you can be bothered the video shows comparisons.

In general if gamers start buying junk that is less than fully featured like this, we're going to end up in the dark age of PC gaming.

I'm familiar with WHAT it is, I've just never used it, so I withhold any comments about it. It is also outdated right now.

Easy fix would be to keep the prices at RRP then!

Oh wait…. that's not easy at all.

New to PCs - saw another pre-built PC making the rounds on OzB ($300 more). Wondering if it's worth the upgrade?

    https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/kp-backtoschool-system-kr…

    • +3

Yes the 6600XT is a fantastic card and worth the upgrade if you can afford it. It'll give you a few good years more than the 6500XT will.

    • It depends on you and what you are going to use the pc for.

  • +1

Maybe better off spending $300 more for something like 80%+ increase in GPU performance, going from the 6500XT to the 6600XT?

    https://www.bpctech.com.au/product/kp-backtoschool-system-kr…

Of course you can get even higher performance if you fork over even more, but this 6600 XT deal looks like one of the best price points before diminishing returns starts to really kick in hard.

    • Remember this is not just plug & play, I have to factor the extra cost of Wifi, Windows Key & shipping on top of the $1299, remember BPC not even pre-install unactivated windows for their prebuilt anymore, so for parents with no idea, it will be a pain for them to get it up and running.

    • +2

It's more like a ~50-60% performance increase (in most games, the 6500xt does really bad in doom for example). (assuming that all other parts are the same similar, which they aren't) but $300 more is ~94% more than the price of the 6500xt, so ye, like always you pay more for diminishing returns. It all depends on your specific use case if the 6600xt is worth it over the 6500xt.

      • +1

Quite a few of the benchmarks I've seen shows close to a doubling in frame rates going from the 6500 XT to the 6600 XT, comparing like-for-like.

However, something that doesn't show up in purely numerical benchmarks (but just as important) is that in video benchmarks, you can quite often see what appears to be the VRAM limitations of the 6500 XT, which results in stuttering in games even when the fps numbers themselves doesn't seem like a problem.

  • +1

Garbage GPU. At least it's a full rig, but I wouldn't waste your money on it.

    • +3

why is it garbage? what would you recommend instead?

      • +2

Look up some reviews. Very small VRAM, very slow VRAM, very restricted PCI interface, generally quite poor performance. I'd recommend… any higher tier AMD gpu, or older ones (RX580 etc).

Nvidia RTX3050 is a much more reasonable lower end modern GPU. I'm not calling the rtx 3050 low end in an absolute sense or particularly cheap, but it makes smart compromises to give a decent card rather than giving you something totally gimped and next to useless.

        • +4

what if I don't want to spend double? the next tier amd gpu is the 6600xt and thats an extra $300. so 100% extra money for only 50% improved performance, so it's not even better value for money.

The RX 580 is not only second hand, but costs at least $450 for a second hand unit. the 6500xt is $320 brand new. The 6500xt also beats the rx 580 in most games at 1080p.

Your recommendations are a garbage waste of money.

Never thought my first Ozbargain deal post would generate so much controversy.

It's been a hilarious discussion. The best part about Ozbargain are the discussions, I think its where I've learned the most about recent sockets/platforms etc after being out of the PC rig building for years.. It almost rivals YouTube..

Perhaps I should have prefaced the "ideal for a kids gaming PC" with the following:

    Doesn't suit:

    • top of the range performance buyers
    • people who can build, or have the time/patience to build their own PC's
    • people who are happy to buy parts from many stores all over the country
    • people who are happy to buy second hand (and try their luck with scammers, scalping, no warranty and having the street smarts to understand second hand deals)
    • people happy to wait for better deals
    • people with $1300 or so to spend

    Does suit:
    - people who want to just buy a simple rig, built and plug and play (caveat, windows won't be licnsed, but should be installed)
    - people with a strict budget of $999 (plus shipping), like an 11 year old who has saved his birthday money, and another $300 for a better GPU means another six months or more of saving/pocket money
    - people happy to play at 1080p in games like CSGO, minecraft, fortnite, roblox… (like the majority of the steam charts gamers running 1060's etc and old rigs)
    - people who don't care about VRAM, and all kinds of technical stuff
-people who ARE super tech/computer savvy, but are literally buying a PC for a kid or family member and don't want the hassle of doing intense research/part compatibility/multiple bargain purchases, and offload warranty responsibility to someone else - and maybe flip them a used 3060ti upgrade someday when they are second hand and cheap (granted we know that you'll be Mr Tech Support anyway haha)

    • +1

Yeah, this is a tough one.. so many factors involved that it's hard to make general recommendations that will suit everyone's needs.

This isn't a terrible deal, and while you can change out certain parts to make it better, it starts to add up. By the time you're done, it's no longer within the budget you started out with

      • people who want to just buy a simple rig, built and plug and play (caveat, windows won't be licnsed, but should be installed)

Official word on that is "used to":

"Yes, we used to pre-install the Windows 10 Home OEM Edition (Unactivated) for all Gaming PCs.

However, after several customers complained about how hard it was to re-install other operating systems. We cancelled this policy."

I just don't understand, every post with a 6500xt everyone comes out to rage at how bad it is. but they can never give a single better alternative.

    • +2

Hey mate it's a good deal. Rx6500xt just gonna get the hate

      • I'm all for the RX6500XT hate since it'll keep the prices low and going lower for it. Then when it drops a bit can be an upgrade for alot of iGPU builds. Serious gamers or those with gaming as their main thing + 1440p and streaming will never buy this card.

    • +2

The main reason 6500XT can be bought at RRP is the negative sentiment killing demand for it. Sheep are always going to be sheep mindlessly following their favourite reviewers and incapable of drawing their own independent conclusions from the given data.

In the bigger picture this is a good thing because people with at least an ounce of smarts and on a low budget can finally get something decent hassle-free.

  • +1

you will definitely feel like you are a 2015 gamer with this rig

  • +2

Even this RX6500XT already rage like this, I couldn't imagine what will end up when a even more shitty card AMD is going to release … RX6500 !!!

    Intel Core i5 11400, ASUS PRIME B560M-K Motherboard, Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2666C16 16GB (2x8GB) 2666MHz DDR4

Happy to choose an equivalent as I am just looking for a mono+cpu+ram combo to fit my existing gtx 1080

    • Sorry mate I don't work for the store, just found it and posted it.

      • No worries, your post is helpful as I need to replace an old i7-2600 that finally gave up today while driving a gtx 1080

        • +2

Why not just get it from Scorptec?

EDIT: also, you might be able to get similar prices as the bundle you listed by getting the parts separately, with a better motherboard:

@zrmx: Thanks heaps! Amazon prime is very convenient

            —-

Btw, can you suggest a good cooler for this combo?

            • @xorprime: Any 120mm tower cooler should do fine - they are all basically clones of each other (cough Hyper 212) - just get the cheapest one. Some install easier than others though.

I personally prefer ID-Cooling Series SE-224 due to easy install. DEEPCOOL GAMMAX 400 is fine too.

Edit: I'd also recommend avoiding the MSI B560M PRO and instead going with either the MSI Mortar or the Asus TUF Gaming B560M-Plus at $129 Amazon.

              • @tekisei: Thanks. I have an old Noctua NH-U12F but not sure if it has the mounting kit for LGA 1200. My googling leads me to Bequiet Rock 4 but I’ll have a look at your recommendation.
                ——
                EDIT
About the b560 mobo, this video https://youtu.be/g3AEj3x39vQ tells me to choose the better one and I will include Asus as per your post.

                • +1

@xorprime: iirc LGA1200 is the same cooler mount as LGA115x so I think your old cooler would work fine.

                • +1

@xorprime: While the MSI Mortar board isn't featured in the HUB video, it is pretty much the mATX implementation of the Tomahawk, so the Tomahawk results in the HUB video would likely reflect the Mortar results too. As you can see in the HUB video, the ASUS PRIME B560M-K can be a disaster of a board, which I'd recommend to avoid.

In terms of the cooler, the NH-U12F is compatible via the upgrade kit (https://noctua.at/en/nm-i115x-mounting-kit), free of charge from Noctua (https://noctua.at/en/which-noctua-cpu-coolers-are-compatible…) if you submit a request via their contact form: https://noctua.at/en/contact . This is what I like about Noctua, that they try and support their coolers on new platforms as much as they can free of charge. This adds and prolongs the value of the cooler, while reducing waste. I guess only downside is you have to wait for shipping from Austria, which my last request took ~1 month to get to me. Although you might not have much option, as it seems the "NM-i115x-1200" kit isn't available any where online in Australia atm.

For anyone considering this, here's my two cents:
I paid 350AUD for my 1060 6gb in 2017 and it would feel crap to pay the same money 5 years later for around the same performance, BUT the markets sucks too so what do you do…? (HODL if you can I guess..).

I use my PC so much and have my 1060 O.C'ed up high so I fear I'm gonna smoke it soon. So for fun I decided to plan for such scenario. If it happens tomorrow: 6500 XT would be the answer on PCIE4.
I watch GPU specs, comparisons and benchmarks almost daily for fun and it looks like the 6500XT is just a tad ahead in speed compared to the 1060 6gb.

Latest and modern AAA titles might be totally doable and are very much enjoyable in LOW/MED with a 1060 6gb.
I beat Control in LOW/MED 1440p doing around 55fps. Loved it.
I beat CP2077 in mostly LOW 1080p doing around 50fps. Had a ball.
Playing The Ascent in LOW/MED 1440p doing arond 55fps. Gorgeous, but getting a bit bored.
I do believe the 6500xt might pull similar numbers.
WARNING: 4GB might not be enough if you are planning MID-HIGH textures/quality.

    • -1

I trust your GTX 1060 6GB will survive long enough until your next upgrade with proper cooling, this is the strength & quality of Nvidia.

5 years later paying the same price for an AMD 6500XT 4Gb. That says it all really. I'm afraid to say the 6500XT will not last another 5 years like you have with your 1060 6Gb which has given you so much enjoyment playing the latest AAA titles. AMD marketing department has always targeted this mass entry level audience playing popular games with low requirements such as esports, that's where the money is made.

AMD's marketing department have a long history of rebranding and reusing old gpus. They did the same hyping up early Ryzen series when people overlooked the fact that Intel was in fact the better performer over majority of generations. Very smart marketing department that you need to be aware of, but I give credit that they always seem to feed the needs of the market at any given time & provide Nvidia with much needed competition.

      • I honestly don't know the people who keep downvoting my comments when I'm sharing some knowledge.
If you don't agree with me can you at least provide reasoning for doing so, so others can see and contribute?
I haven't offended anybody and I'm encouraging you all to correct me if I'm wrong.

That PSU doesn't leave much room for a GPU upgrade later on.

  • Price is now $699, maybe worth it for light gaming/2nd pc
