75% for Life Discount and $100 PayPal Credit for New Turnkey VPS/Web Hosting (Negative Cost!)

This deal was previously removed (and poorly explained to you bargain hunters!).

EG: VPS1 becomes -$10.15 for 12 months (i.e less than $0 for a 512MB RAM/10Gb HDD/1000Mb Bandwidth @ ??Mbps/1 dedicated 2Ghz+ CPU VPS)

Ultimate 200GB 2000GB Unlimited YES YES Free $3.74 GREEN75HOSTING

Remeber you also get $100 Paypal credit after 2 months
Hosting plans may also be cheaper if you contract for 12 or 24 months… Prices above are for the month to month options

I spoke to TurnKey to confirm:

  • Aussies can't get the $100 gift card, they are offering us a $100 PayPal credit after a month (Will need to lodge a support ticket).
  • Monthly billing (but it is a re-occuring discount anyway)
  • It is only for their 'green' New York datacentre (not great for us Aussies).
  • IF you stay for 12 months, yes, they end up paying you $10.15 (I'm not quite sure what is keeping you there after 2 months… But please don't take advantage of this, good VPS deals are hard to find!!)
  • Make sure you remove the Business Continuity Insurance ($5 extra per month)
  • Credit card, paypal and google payment methods
I figure it is worth a shot for at least a year. After that ongoing price for the VPS1 plan is only $7.49US per month.

Edit: I have done some rudimentary bench marking for you guys. Basically it looks like an outstanding little box (VPS1). Ping time is a little high, bandwidth is a little slow (by USA VPS standards), but insanely quick HDD and a decent CPU makes this a great deal! • OK for -minimal- purchase requirements…

    What happens -after- 12 months…?

Do prices rise to exorbitant levels?

Are there any other risks or negative "features" about this?

Could an overly popular web site end up costing an arm & a leg, due to "over bandwidth" usage that cannot be stopped or capped at known/agreed price per month?

How likely is this provider to be there after 12 months?

    TIA

    • 75% off is for life. So for the VPS1 plan, it would be $7.49US per month.

Xen is a better platform and prevents overloading (compared to OpenVZ).

Host seems decent. As I warned, it is in New York, so round trip times may be lengthy.
I have seen Turnkey Internet for a while, so hopefully things go well. It is only monthly billing, so if anything happens you only lose up to a months value.

My interest is in the VPS. I am looking to make a VPN endpoint in the US for netflix/hulu/etc.
This is additional work (as they just give you a freshly installed box, and leave it up to you to install VPN software, Web Server etc

      • Are -all- of the install, etc. tasks that you'd have to do (for a VPS) possible to do -from- AU…?

Or do you have to pay them (or someone) to act as your agent,
each time you need to do some things done.

        (I don't know VPS T&C's)

        • They get it to a state where you have SSH access.

(I also think that TurnKey have a pretty decent panel available to do some tasks remotely (restart, reimage etc)

        • So, what, when you (eg, in the case of a Dedicated Server) have to load Op Sys & Server S/W (eg, a LAMPP stack) have to upload it all every time it needs to be re-imaged, or how to do this?

Also, do any of these service offerings work for those wanting to set up a Games Server? (We know teens, who've be making pretty good $$$ each month, ie, by selling access to their game servers, that others maintain & power for them; the teens do the software & account management - remotely - for themselves.)

IF so & you've been thinking of doing this kind of thing, this just might be the time to invest in your server services… even early. :-)

And - since it all may vary for each such business like TurnKey - where's -their- detailed documentation on all that'd be required?

At least at this offer's prices, it wouldn't cost too much to learn the In's & Out's of this business, so you're in a better way to do it later, even if this is all new to you now.

(So, this is a great -educational- marketing deal, that seeks to expand the -market's- customer base… I like that aspect of it!)

  • how to get the 75% ? any discount code required?

    • OP updated with VPS discount codes.

      • Tried to get VPS1 for windows, for 12 months, after applying discount code,
        Subtotal: $337.05 USD
$22.46 USD Recurring Discount: $22.46 USD
        Total Due Today: $314.59 USD
        Total Recurring: $314.59 USD Annually

        If monthly choosed:
        Subtotal: $37.45 USD
$22.46 USD Recurring Discount: $22.46 USD
        Total Due Today: $14.99 USD
        Total Recurring: $14.99 USD Monthly

        • Yes, must select monthly billing. It is reoccuring anyway!

        • -1

          so dose that mean 2 months subscription(and cancel after that) = $15 + $15 = $30 and i will get a $100 paypal gift which makes it a -$70(i will get a $70 for registering and staying 2 months)?

worst case if it extends for another 2 months to get the cash back and all the stuff i will get at least a $40?

    • First, on the web site, it's the usual suspect "up to" 75% Off wording

See upper left corner banners, eg, here (they don't seem to say "up to"):

I see it in the Dedicated Servers page… maybe 75% Off $10 / month
for an Atom-based dedicated server, if I'm reading it correctly…

      (apparently) PLUS $100 sign-up bonus:

      "GREEN Atom
      .CPU: ATOM 330
      .Total CPU Cores: 2

      .RAM: 1 GB
      .Disk: 1 x 250 GB
.RAID: Optional - SW RAID 0 or 1
      .Traffic: 1,000 GB Monthly

      Plus $100 CASH BACK!
      Use Coupon GREENSERVERSPECIAL1!

      $10/mo"

In the OP's table format (or similar)

      Product-Name - RAM - Disks - Traffic - Coupon
      ============ - === - ===== - ======= - ===================
      "Green Atom" - 1GB - 250GB - 1,000GB - GREENSERVERSPECIAL1

That sounds pretty good… Use your $100 to cover the $2.50 / month
fees (assuming no hidden costs go on top of that monthly charge) for
      40 months (ie, ~3.3 year)

Ideal, I'd think, for someone just starting out, eg, web site design students or low-budget start-up businesses.

I don't know if they'll have to limit the number of Atom servers for those who want one…?

      IF this is 75% Off + a 1-off $100 sign-up bonus,
      it seems pretty genuine & I'll sign-up…

ie, IF I don't need to visit the place
or pay someone to do so, as my agent,
to get value from a Dedicated Server… would I?

      • Should note that I thought this was a bargain as well, but it appears to be sold out already.

There are other options, but i think the majority of ozbargain would be interested in the VPS and web hosting deal…

      • It appears that the green dedicated servers that have been mentioned have their own discounts - it's only VPN and hosting that has the 75% for life discount. The dedicated servers still appear to be heavily discounted, but the price you see is the price you're going to pay if you're considering them (so IVI's trick won't work).

        • Follow the -first- link in my previous post…

Dedicated servers, Cloud Servers (costly) & the third type all show "75% Off" on that page.

What "trick" are you referring to? (Eg, choosing a different service, that's marked "75% Off"…?!? Some trick, eh… not)

    • If you want a CHEAPER way into this deal, see my rather -lengthy- summary on a cheap Dedicated Server.

There, I give links to the company's pages -and- the coupon for the cheapest deal, in which:

      • they'd be paying for your first ~3.3 years of service
      • (…ie, IF I've read it correctly.)
      • Which would be great, if it wasn't out of stock.

        • Try back-ordering… ;-)

  • +1

I'm not quite sure what is keeping you there after 1 or 2 months… But please don't take advantage of this!

Seems like a good deal, but it isn't a nice thought that part of my monthly fee would be going toward subsidising the many who probably will do a hit-and-run for the free cash, rather than being reinvested into the service.

    • They may well be enjoying some gov't grants (or VC cash infusions) either for going Green or as an investment. And - that they've tailored the offer for Aussies - means
they're happy to take the risk you seem worried about.

They've obviously worked up a business model that works for them.

Focus on what you need, & let the business deal with "fly-by-nighters"…

Is this deal going to help -you- achieve -your- goal(s) or not?
And… Is it -worth- the cost?

      • Is this deal going to help -you- achieve -your- goal(s) or not?

That depends - the VPS at that price would be of long-term interest to me, but so would cancelling after a couple of months and keeping the $100. If the latter works for them such that I shouldn't worry, as you say, then contrary to the OP's plea, people should have no qualms about going that route (not that I advocate this - it's just how I interpret what you're saying).

        • Well, eg, just -maybe- they have to show the bank or a VC (or 3) improvement or just a certain minimum no. of New Sign-ups, by month's end.

They'd be happy to count even the fly-by-nighters (who'll stay for at least 60 days), so… no issue.

Meet their conditions, & do as you wish - within the contract's T&C's.

  • Did anyone from here signed up with Turnkey during the last promotion? This time I'm even more tempted to sign up for a VPS especially with the $100 bonus.

  • would i be able to set up a VPN on the VPS?

    • +1

I've got OpenVPN set up on one - just followed a guide on Google for Centos x64 VPN setup. Was a bit tricky (I've little to no linux knowledge) but eventually got it going via Putty/SSH and copy and pasting the commands.

  • +2

I signed up last time (Black Friday promotion?) with the 75% recurring discount. Got the basic VPS with upgrade to 1GB RAM, a cPanel license and Softaculous installer. Think it's around $12-13US/month for the lot (cPanel license alone is normally around $15US i'm led to believe). Easy to install Wordpress, Drupal, forum software etc with the Softaculous Installer. Easy to administer with WHM/cPanel interfaces.

EDIT: Last Invoice below - I'm paying $10.49USD/month for the VPS and $3.25USD/month for the cPanel license. Total of $13.74USD/month for
    Virtual Private Servers- Linux VPS #1 (03/28/2012 - 04/27/2012)

Server Ram (Guaranteed Dedicated Ram): 1 GB Ram (Guaranteed)
Disk Drive (Raid10 Protected): 10 GB [Included]
    Bandwidth: 1000 GB [included]

R1Soft CDP Remote Backups: No R1Soft Backup & Support

    Sub Total: $10.49 USD
    Credit: $0.00 USD
    Total: $10.49 USD
    + cPanel license @ $3.25USD

I pay via Paypal with a subscription set up so I don't have to worry about paying the invoices. I can cancel the subscription via Paypal if I want out. Using a 28 Degrees Mastercard via Paypal to get the best AUD/US conversion rate.

It's been working great, have a few websites hosted on it and a VPN to the US. No downtime that I'm aware of. Would recommend.

I previously had a cheap $5AUD hosting account from VentraIP. Thought I'd upgrade to a VPS so I can host a few more websites and have more control. There was definitely a bit of a learning curve but Google and the cPanel forums are your friend!

    • Seems odd that you'd have to -pay- for cPanel license or usage.
Maybe that's their way to Nickel & Dime you, by way of a subtle up-sell… :-(

  • Note the following from the T&Cs:

Non-US Residents will be paid via PAYPAL, or service credit via TurnKey Internet, Inc.

It does not say explicitly that the customer gets to choose.

  • Do you have to have a registered domain name for the VPS deal to work? Or can you sign up without domain name and just use the static ip address they provide?

    • +2

Pretty sure you can plug in whatever you like as the Domain name (but you must enter something) and still access your server via the IP address. I put in a domain name when registering (that I actually own) but took me ages to set up the name servers etc to actually point the domain to the IP.
i.e. I think you could put 'server1.example.com' and it wouldn't matter. You'd still be able to access the VPS via 123.456.789.000:2087 (WHM) or 123.456.789.000:2083 (cPanel) as I was able to.
You can also change the domain name at a later date via Turnkey's management area anyway if needed.

But ultimately it doesn't cost much for a domain name.

      • Why did it take so long to do those simple things?

        1. no documentation to tell you how?

        2. Hard to read documentation?

        3. other reason?

        • Combination of 1 and 2. Was reading cPanel documentation and it says you need 2 dedicated IPs for the nameservers. I only have 1 dedicated IP for the whole VPS. That kinda confused me for a while. I'd also never used WHM/cPanel to do this kind of stuff before. Also didn't quite understand the settings required on my domain registrar's management page.

  • Signed up to webhosting using your aff link because of the effort you went to to format the post :D

  • Just putting it out there, we still have to POST MAIL in the rebate request.

  • How reliable is TurnkeyInternet when it comes to hosting? The deal seems great.
