Drop + Sennheiser HD8XX (Drop HD800S) Headphones: US$699 + Reship with Shipito + GST for ~US$848 (~A$1190)

ZEOS8XX

Drop version of the Sennheiser HD800S that retails for $1900 in AU. One of the most anticipated Drop releases. This is a controversial new Drop Sennheiser collab, some love it, some hate it. I have posted the deal as the $700 AUD discount is massive for someone looking to get a flagship Sennheiser. There are a lot of EQ profiles already available. As it's a new Drop collab, people are still experimenting with different settings to get it to 'sound better' than the HD800S.

Shipping:

AU Addresses does not work with coupon, have to use a Mail Forwarding company like ShipIto (Quote came to $79 USD with Insurance for NSW) than add GST on top. Use ShipIto Oregon Warehouse (no US tax is added unlike LA Warehouse). Plethora of Mail Forward companies that can be cheaper than ShipIto, that's just 1 example. If you have family / friend's in the US that can re-ship it to you that's another option.

Total would be around ~$848 USD with ShipIto Shipping and GST. That comes to, ~$1191 AUD landed.

Marketing Description:

The HD 8XX is based on the HD 800S; a flagship audiophile headphone produced by our partners at Sennheiser. Like the HD 800S, the HD 8XX is made in Germany at Sennheiser’s HQ factory. Based on community requests, we worked with Sennheiser to tune the housing resonance to add low end extension, while we adjusted the driver damping to create midrange balance and reveal treble detail. Introducing the Drop + Sennheiser HD 8XX: class-leading headphones with a revised tuning, signature Drop color accents, and unrivaled performance.

Edit: Headphone reviewer DMS also mentioned the only tuning change to the HD8XX is an internal tape that can be removed and the HD8XX gets pretty much very close to the HD800S sound signature. There is debate on this mod and if it even works but his tweet is here. https://twitter.com/dms3tv/status/1433817637792911375

  • In regards to the last edit, there DMS or some other reviewer mentioned that it's not just the tape mod, but there's also foam inserted into the vents around the driver, and it's a lot more invasive to remove the foam.
Removing the tape is minimally invasive, though.

I only know this as I wanted to buy the HD8xx a while ago, and was trying to figure out if there's a way to undo the mods. Unfortunately I can't find the orignal post, as it was a reply to a comment in a forum or one of DMS's videos or something but I do recall hearing it from him.

  • Any recommendations for the forwarding service? I'm leaning towards Shopfans currently, it claims to be a bit cheaper than ShipItTo, and all accounts get a free Delaware account for no USA taxes?

Does not have a lot of good reviews online. I wouldn't use them.

  • I have HD800S, I'm not a bass head, nor do I like bright headphones, which encompasses most Beyerdynamic's and Audio-Technica's, but I find the HD800S strikes a great balance. It is still possibly the best dynamic driver headphone around. I can't imagine Drop adding more bass or messing with sound stage being a good thing, but if the changes are reversible through mods then this is a good deal. The HD800S at any rate make for some great listening, great detail, but nothing overbearing, maintaining a smooth grain free experience with a nice flat FR that does not sound boring or overly neutral thanks to the well defined sound stage and imaging. Effortless. Just bear in mind if you can live with a smaller soundstage the Focal Clear is the way to go if you want more detail, but I tend to find that gets tiring and claustrophobic, something the HD800S has no problems with.

    • Not a bass head, doesn't like bright headphones. Username is TRANCE. ROFL.

  • HD800S is a better buy IMO especially if they get it back down to that $1499 price. I paid $1799 and think its an absolute steal compared to the real high end headphones on the market.

Pairs beautifully with My Chord Qutest DAC and Burson Soloist 3XP Amp.

  • Man, it's really hard to go to drop now. It used to be so good and now it's just… Yeah, key caps and audio!

If you've never had the chance to test something high end, I would recommend heading into addicted-to-audio or some similar place, to test them first hand.

I always assumed I wanted to upgrade my Sennheiser's to an HD800* model one day. When I finally got to it, I went to ata first to hear what I'm actually paying for. I ended up having a preference for an entirely different line of headphones. I picked up something from Audeze, after spending a few hours back to back sampling.

At this price point, you definitely want to test run anything before purchasing.
