  • I notice the Optus X Delight is on sale for $99 also with a $30 starter at a few places within the Coles (but not Coles itself it seems) and Woolworths groups and looks to have similar specs The most obvious differences are the smaller battery and Optus' typical bastardly band nobbling or as Optus puts it: "Handset has been modified to be optimised to maximise profits for the Optus network". On the Plus side, maybe, is that it is a more recent release of Android, Android 11 Go vs. Android 10 on the moto. No information on the SOC other than it is Octa-Core (1.6GHz4+1.2GHz4), gee thanks ZTE. That is slower clocked than the moto but clock speed isn't everything. Does anyone know more about the SOC on that?

    • Mediatek G25 (4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4x1.5 GHz Cortex-A53), display is a 720p IPS.

      • Not on the Optus X Delight.

        • Just skimmed your comment, the Optus X Delight likely uses the Unisoc SC9863A like the Nokia C01 Plus although that's just an educated guess on my part. I couldn't find the exact ZTE phone Optus has rebranded.

If you're hellbent on one of these two, I would definitely choose the Motorola over the Optus due to the significantly larger battery. Although the performance of both leaves a lot to be desired when compared with the Realme C3, which went for a whole $24 less.

That's interesting of you to say given the cores in the Unisoc greatly outperform the cores in the Mediatek. I would reckon the harder the phone is used the better the battery life in the Unisoc would compare. I suspect for web browsing the bigger battery would be better but some web pages take an awful lot of CPU to load.

No, I'm not hellbent on either, not at these prices.

I seem to recall that went in hours and remaining stocks sell for silly prices.

            • @Stingo: Yes, I'm aware the Unisoc performs better, I recall answering your question about this earlier.

Power consumption between the two SOCs should be similar, thus the Motorola would have better battery life in all circumstances.

The Pixel 3 at $225 would be a good alternative if you're willing to spend more. But there are the drawbacks of only 64GB of storage, no SD card support, ~3000mah battery and it no longer being updated after this year.

That's how I know, but my point is that with a more efficient processor battery usage is minimised when the phone is working hard. Not only because of that efficiency but because the screen needn't stay on so long if the user if waiting for something to happen. So to speculate, if a user is visiting CPU intensive web pages that are quick to read the processor efficiency of the ZTE will make up for the disadvantage of the smaller battery to some extent. Overall, I suppose that for most people the phone would spend a lot of time with the processor idling so the bigger battery is probably a win but the difference in run time will come down to how the phones are used.

                • +1

@Stingo: Thank you for your hypothesis. But the difference in power consumption and efficiency won't be so great as to allow a device with almost double the battery capacity to be outperformed in endurance.

    2GB of RAM = yuck

    • Sure, but its under $100 and a relatively new phone.

      • yeah unless you get really lucky 2/32 is all you're going to get… and android go

the slightly higher spec ZTEs sometimes go on sale, they are 3/64 and run full android

      • Find a second hand phone with better specs.
I'm using a pixel3 basically brand new, slight defect on the screen (bottom left corner so meh) that I paid $80 on eBay.
Will probably be able to sell for same price once I managed to source a pixel4 for a good price.
Motorola+ 2gb. Waste of money (+ frustration guarantee)

I've tried. Phones typically sell for more than I'm prepared to pay and then there's the issue of battery life.

Nice find, even parts only phones seem to go for high prices on eBay. If I had to buy a phone tomorrow, I'd go for a Pixel 2 or 3 since its well supported by open source though there are some aspects of the phone I"m not that keen on. What do you reckon I should pay for one of those in excellent condition?

Motorola+ 2gb. Waste of money (+ frustration guarantee)

For most people I'm sure it would be but it likely would be an improvement on my old Huawei Y550 except that phone was able to get a boot loader unlock code from the manufacturer (for a period) and even had a few custom roms available with the one for LineageOS 14.1 getting the monthly google security updates integrated by one keen fellow up until the middle of last year! Do they even have any new Qualcomm chipset phones under $200 these days? Assuming a cheap enough 3rd party unlock I'd buy the Moto for say $50. Maybe even the Optus ZTE since I'm currently using an Optus MVNO but I really hate Optus's band disabling.

          • @Stingo: I agree YMMV, was pretty lucky no one else bid higher. I guess being the pink with defect helped. You have to make compromises.

But I've missed a few bid by a few dollars for outstanding price. Looks like atm, there isn't much offer on eBay.
I bought a few pixel which had detects and probably sat in a draw for months/years. Got a pixel XL for $80 battery new condition, only some burn marks (probably demo phone) which you don't notice with the dark theme.
Not perfect but less than $100 while I was waiting for the $1k+ pixel 6 (which I ended up not buying)

I wouldn't buy pixel 2/2xl at this stage.
Pixel 3a+ introduces esim, which would enable more mobile plan savings.

Really happy with pixel3. I'd say $100-$150 would be a good price.

Wanted android 12 and wireless charging. Not too fuss about audio jack port, or storage (I back up all pics to Google photos through my pixel XL)

Any reason apart from newer, better phones being out there? My plan would be to put a recent custom ROM on it.

It seems this is also available in the Pixel 2. If I'm paying good money then I definitely want a dual SIM. At the moment, I'm a bit on the fence on eSIM especially for use here in Oz rather than travelling OS. If my MVNO ever gets around to offering eSIM than no worries. My MVNO is a laggard.

              • +1

@Stingo: I looked it up recently to take advantage of the Woolies 6months prepaid plan, and nope, only pixel3a onward have esim

I guess you can try pixel 2/2xl if you're gonna change the rom. My main point against it was about it being stuck on Android 11, lack of wireless charging for the car. And the lack of esim, but so does the pixel 3

                • @ShouldIBuyIt: According to the Google support article on Pixel specs the Pixel 2 does have eSIM but Wikipedia only mentions this capability for the Pixel 2s so go figure. Anyway, thanks for alerting me to the issue which I will need to check out more thoroughly before I pull the trigger on one.

Edit: According to Android Police the Pixel 2/2XL are dual SIM, single standby which I'm not even sure I knew was a thing other than via 3rd party multi-SIM adapters. It probably would be ok for my usage but less than desirable. Can you use data on one SIM on the Pixel 3 while making a call on the other?

          • @Stingo: Check out the AliExpress reconditioned phones. Some about this price point with 4gb if you can wait for postage

            • @Sapiens: Thanks for the tip but I'm a bit worried about battery condition in refurbished phones. I was considering the LG V20 for a while which has a removable battery but they aren't cheap and VoLTE support is unclear. The refurbished old Pixels at mobileciti have some appeal but I wish they were cheaper. I may take a trip out there to look at the phones and see if I can negotiate a better price than they offer online.

              • @Stingo: i think if you're willing to go to $200-$250 they phones get really really better

i got that tcl10 for $200… going back a few years the nokia 6.1 for $200 still beats a lot of this prepaid shit

i got that telsta evoke 2 for $60 and its great for that money

android go and 2/32 format really sucks
