    Can’t wait for #3

    • +1

Oh hi I'm waiting for 4

    • +1

wont be for a long while. The "pro" at a projected $1,000 plus will be happening this year with minor updates though (colour passthrough, more expensive optics making it smaller and maybe lighter)

      • +2

I assume the colour pass through is for AR?

Really I just want some better graphics and lighter headset

        • Yep, I would also assume so. I hope they are also able to fix the issue with the current passthrough where you get some weird distortion effects between camera joins.

      • +3

        Just found this:
The insider claims that the high-end Metaverse headset will release in Q2 2022, while the Quest 3 will make its debut at Meta’s 2023 Connect event.
        More here: https://www.pcgamesn.com/oculus/quest-3-release-date-price-s…

      • More like $2,200 (US $1500)

    • Will we get that though with Facebook stock going down? I'm honestly contemplating selling my current oculus quest 2 honestly if there are any takers (unless they plan to remove the God forsaken Facebook account requirement to use oculus quest 2 that is)

      • Yeah that’s a terrible requirement. All it’s going to take is a competing product that doesn’t require an account, though maybe not at these prices. They don’t make any profit apparently

      • +2

They've already announced that the FB requirement is being removed in the future, and if you contact oculus support they'll already uncouple your FB account from your oculus stuff.

  • +22

    OzRRP is back

  • +1

    Thanks got one.

    • +7

Don't forget to signup using a referral link to get the $47 credit (you'll need to turn on PM's first tho).

      • Where do you find the referral link?

      • someone send me a referral?

      • I'm always happy to help someone with a referral but they always ghost me when they find out we need to be Facebook friends for at least 30 days.

      • If anyone has any insight, I used a referral from a friend and didn't get the credit. Oculus live chat say the $48 credit is only if oculus is bought through oculus website? - EDIT: looks like as I have messed with developer settings before even getting a Quest that the referral didn't go through. Support was super helpful and did it manually for me. Got the credit in the end!

  • +6

    Nah.

    • The blue pill is better sometimes.

      • +3

Especially when the blue pill is tanking

  • Also in stock at the Oculus Store. If you wanted to buy from there for whatever reason

    • I think it comes from.Hong.Kong if you buy from Oculus.

      • Yep, I bought mine from there a few days ago. When Amazon was OOS

      • Mine came from Ireland for what it's worth

    • +5

Much better and easier customer service returns via Amazon tho if you happen to receive a dud unit.

  • same price at other site

  • +21

Facebook is evil, billion dollar company cant get their act together when it comes to privacy.
Only this useful is FB marketplace, been getting freebies past few weeks. Managed to upgrade washing machine, sound system and chairs for free.
Cannot believe how generous some people are, giving away mint condition items for free. Ive phased from checking ozbargain few times every hour to now checking the marketplace lol.

    • I use it to get rid of things around the house all the time, usually with half an hour of posting someone comes and grabs the crap I don’t want. I can’t be bothered trying to sell things on eBay or gumtree etc I just don’t have the time and before marketplace if I didn’t know someone who wanted the stuff I’d just take it to the tip. For example I have 4 brand new internal doors from a renovation where we ordered too many of a size that I have had in the garage for a month taking up space, I’m about to put them on marketplace and I’m sure they’ll be taken by tomorrow

      • +1

How many 2x4's can I carve out of your free doors? 🤣

        • +1

unfortunately for you internal doors are hollow

  • +8

Not really worth selling your data to Facebook.

    • +1

Not really selling it, just giving it. Although what data are you worried about? Genuine question, I'm not really fussed and personally own one.

      • +4

Voice fingerprints, facial biometrics, home environments, height, movement behaviours (this one can be ambiguous)
Not saying they will definitely collect and abuse these data, just listing a few that’s already there.

        • +2

I just use a fake account. I’m sure there’s some small bits of data but I only use it for oculus and bargains.

          • +15

@kiriakoz: They almost definitely know it’s you despite being a fake account

            • +7

@Doy: 100% this. They use which wifi networks you're close to to geolocate you and link your fake accounts to your real accounts.
At the moment it's all in the name of profits but who knows what the future holds.

              • +3

                @pauly85:

They use which wifi networks you're close to to geolocate you and link your fake accounts to your real accounts

Thats ok, i live in siberia. Thank you VPN

                • +1

@easternculture: VPN won't protect you. Whichever wifi signals your device is close to is where they'll locate you, not by your ip address.

              • +1

@pauly85: How can they link my fake accounts to my real ones when my real ones don’t exist? I know they have info on me but to what end? I only access via my oculus and occasionally computer via VPN.

I know they get info on me but to what end if it’s just login and location ultimately?

          • @kiriakoz: It seems that they are going to allow you to use Oculus without the need of a Facebook account in the near future, which means you dont have to use a fake acount anymore.
However, in both cases, if they want they can still pinpoint your identity by your wifi access point.

          • +2

@kiriakoz: Wise choice, probably not good to accidentally publish to your mum on your main FB account you like VRBangers

      • +6

It’s more than sacrificing pretty much all of your privacy . Even though most people will deny it, Facebook is a behavioural manipulation machine, more than a mere data collection platform. That’s the reason for my the Facebook feed exists and gets populated with content that a) you will emotionally respond to (hatred works best) and b) will steer you into a desired behaviour. Hence Facebooks great utility for political ads.

Go and watch Netflix’ “The Social Dilemma” to see a dramatised version of what’s going on at Facebook and other social media platforms.

        • +3

Who would check the feed for a fake Facebook account though? There’s nobody linked to it.

        • My facebook is entirely simpsons shitposts, and my ads are completely just "learn how to advertise on tiktok effectively with my seminar" type bullshit.

I don't have a tiktok account and I have never advertised anything in my life.

    • +8

why do ppl get worked so up over Facebook, google probably has way more data lol

      • +5

Fair enough and certainly true to some extent. A couple of factors play into why I dislike Facebook/Meta, but am on more neutral terms with Google.

Like Facebook gets repeatedly caught red handed when they have committed some creepy privacy intrusion. Google is more careful here - perhaps because they don’t surface the degree of personalisation in their services as much.

Also, Meta’s services have demonstrably caused real harm. Like teenage girls starting to suffer from anorexia after using Instagram. Or mobs in 3rd world countries committing murder on ethnic minorities after seeing hateful messages on the echo chamber that is their Facebook feed. Not to mention how anti-vaxxers, flat-earthers and other conspiracy theorists find the perfect resonance chamber for their confused thoughts in Facebook.

Thirdly, Google services have great real world utility. First and foremost, that is true for search. But Gmail and Google Maps are also almost indispensable in my life. YouTube is a borderline case, but there’s a lot of educational content. Meta’s services have zero real-world utility for me.

Lastly, there is the creepiness factor that radiates from Mark Zuckerberg himself. Much of the bad practices at Meta are undoubtedly the result of having a (mildly) autistic and socially awkward person create a social network.

None of this makes it OK when others like Google engage in violating my privacy. It feels more like a trade with them though. And weaning off their services is much harder than Facebook, which I quit some 3 years ago.

        • good points

all i'm saying is on average google probably knows way more about you than facebook lol

i've never joined facebook seemed like a waste of time back then, google owns my ass tho knows everything about me, wasn't the greatest idea drinking their "don't be evil" koolaid

        • Agreed with most of your points mate. However in my line of work FB is still the necessary evil as most Australians are on it and it’s easy to keep track of your friends back where I’m from (Vietnam). But communication wise I use Zalo to contact my families and Whassap for work-related group chat. And I also fail to see the point of Meta being the virtual space for even more concerning physical-based cyberbullying and harassment. And FB’s Content Filter is just pure s**t with rubbish and recopied contents with zero originality. Over-bloated yet under-supervised.

    • My account is an empty alternative account im not fussed

    • +20

Spoken like someone who has never used a Quest

    • +11

Haven't touched the PS/XBox since purchasing the Quest a few months back.

      • what makes it better than the gaming consoles?

        • +7

It's like you step into another world.

        • +8

It depends I guess I'm a casual gamer and a sports nut so for me the Quest is on another level and then some. Games like iB Cricket, Eleven Table Tennis, Walkabout Mini Golf, Thrill of the Fight, Golf+ etc are just unreal.

Yes the graphics is cartoony but the level of immersion and game play kind of makes you forget about all that. It's hard to explain you just have to experience it. Plus gets you moving around that's a plus as well.

          • @dins: How much space do you need for it?

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: Varies depending on the game, some are sit down whilst other are standup and move your body/arms a bit (Eleven Table Tennis, Beat Saber etc). Others are full walkaround. Generally a 2x2m space should suffice I reckon but there are some games such as Space pirate trainer which can really benefit from a very large indoor space for Arena mode (say 10x10m).

              Have a look at https://spacepiratetrainerdx.com/

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: Most games can be played as long as you have enough space to sit or stand and wave your arms about, but ideally you’d be able to turn 360 degrees and crouch and lean while waving your arms without hitting anything.

A few games require more space, like Eleven Table Tennis which basically requires the same amount of room you’d want on one side of a real table tennis table.

            • @[Deactivated]: You need I would say at least 3mx2m area for most games. One of the best things about the Quest for mine is how convenient it is. There are no cables or any thing to hook up or cameras and controllers to fidget around with. You can pretty much use it any where there's some space. Just turn it on and within a minute it's ready to go. It's not bulky either so easily stored away when not in use.

        • I have just replayed the original Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Doom 3, and am about to start RTCW and original Half Life, all in gloriously VR and it's one unforgettable experience.

Plus when my wife is on the couch watching her TV shows, I can sit next to her with my VR and headphones in, in my own personal cinema, watching my own TV, Netflix, movies, whatever.

Favourites are Beat Sabre, Super Hot, Pistol Whip and Walking Dead, and the kids love Beat Sabre, plus all the free sport titles on App Lab.

Next on my list will be either Resident Evil VR, or try and get a new PC so I can play Half Life: Alyx.

    Is this wearable with glasses?

    • +5

it should include a spacer for wearing with glasses

      edit to include source: https://support.oculus.com/articles/getting-started/getting-…

    • +3

Yeah using the spacer you can wear glasses.

A lot of people end up buying custom lens inserts to match their prescription so they can use the headset without glasses. It also protects the original lenses underneath from getting scratched from glasses. They're usually pretty expensive but I suppose people love the device and experience enough to justify the costs.

      • +1

Lens inserts for custom prescriptions are available fairly cheaply from Aliexpress. They take a while to arrive of course. Mine were shipped from Japan.

        • how do they work? Do you have the link for aliexpress lens inserts?

        • can you give me your link ?

          • @CyberMurning: I got these from a previous post for about $100, and I have NEVER looked back. HonsVR

They click in via magnets, and when you order, you punch in your glasses details (which you can get from the people you got your prescription glasses from)

My glasses would press into my face.

Make sure you google for a free foam facial face plate to insert into the headset instead of the bog standard one, as they are known to cause rashes/skin irritations. With this in place (made from the stuff that headphones are, the padding) it cramped my space with glasses.

    • I've seen many people who have damged their glasses and the headset lenses even when using the spacer.

We bought some magnetic lenses from HONSVR and they work great. They're also cheap and had fast delivery, around a week iirc.

    • +2

As someone that wears glasses, i find i dont actually need them when wearing oculus. The depth in oculus is illusion not real so depending on your reason for glasses, you might not need to wear them. When i looked into it, apparently if you can see something well at a 2m distance then you wont need to wear glasses. Something about the focal length. Everything else is an illusion so your eyes dont adjust.

      • +1

Quest 1/2’s lenses are focused at 1.3 metres distance, so if you can see well enough at that distance in real life it should be the same in the headset. Many other VR headsets are focused at 2m or thereabouts (or infinity in the DK1 and earlier days).

        • oh so if my eye problem is looking at close (for example reading mobile phone i need to put it further away than normal person), then i dont need need to wear glasses when using oculus?

  • +19

Zuck: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard

    Zuck: Just ask.

Zuck: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS

[Redacted Friend's Name]: What? How'd you manage that one?

    Zuck: People just submitted it.

    Zuck: I don't know why.

    Zuck: They "trust me"

    Zuck: Dumb (profanity)

  • +1

    Are these actually any good.

    • +3

I rate it and I was a sceptic. I use it mainly to keep active in a fun way.

      • what games do you play?

        • +2

I personally have the boxing one (Thrill of the fight), Table Tennis (Eleven Table Tennis) and for a bit of thinking, I got “I expect you to die” (1 & 2) which I haven’t finished yet. They’re the only games I have just yet as only got in a couple of months ago.

          • +1

@kiriakoz: I got the exact line up of games and can vouch for them.

Recently bought the Thrill of the fight, on sale currently (~10AUD). This game tricked you to excercise haha, my arms are so sore the next day..

          • +1

@kiriakoz: Some other games good for exercise are Beat Saber (arms mostly) and Pistol Whip (squats mostly).

    • +6

In my opinion, they're pretty excellent for what they are and the price. Don't want to overhype VR for you, but if you've never tried it, you should see if any of your friends have some you could try or some experience nearby.

Not all VR is equal but these devices definitely drive a hard bargain for being low cost (compared to other VR setups), standalone (no computer needed) and performing well.

    • +1

disclaimer: i have a rift s, not a quest 2, but i think the technology still has a long way to go. the fidelity just isn't good enough for me, personally. you won't find a better headset for the money though.

      • +4

I agree, the Rift S wasn't that big of a step up from the original Rift. This is much better though in terms of resolution and the ability to play games from the hardware inside the headset, or stream them direct from your PC, and the price is significantly better. You can even use it to watch content from your Plex library.

      • +6

Not sourcing from the right places if you're paying $50 for games ;)

I usually cast the Quest 2 to Android TV if someone else is using it to see what they're doing.

        • +2

Yeah casting works pretty well. Watching someone play Warplanes: WWI Fighters is awesome.

        • -2

I thought something like that must be possible, but wasn't into it enough to work it out. The $50 was a rough. The better ones on the store are, what, about $45?

          • +1

@wfdTamar: You just need to watch for the daily sale items, or the larger sales of multiple apps. For instance Population One is 25% off today, at about $35.

Also, sidequest will get you started on a lot of apps before they get officially released. Lots are free but others are paid, it may be a cheaper paid path compared to waiting for full release though (think early bird pricing).

            https://sidequestvr.com/apps/applab/0/rating

    Meta mates rise!

Accept your destiny with oq 2 and serve Emperor Zuckerberg!

    Slaves for his benefit

  • +16

It's a good price compared to other VR headsets but this isn't a bargin, this is RRP

  • +4

Op could you edit the post to include the ozb referral system - this should be the oculus one for a random Ozb member. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/760

    • what do you type? send nudes? lol

Or just hi looking for oculus ref code?

      Thanks :)

      • +2

For anyone considering buying. The referral gives $47 oculus store credit to both the buyer and referrer. You also no longer need to be Facebook friends to do this which is a big change recently.

        • +1

          The t&c's says otherwise.

          https://www.oculus.com/legal/referral-program/

My experience : you have to be friends but usually the credit for the referee hasn't been taking up to 30 days and is instant though YMMV.

          • +2

@dazza826: Yeah, I’m not 100% sure on that but inside the oculus app is a link to your unique share url. They do have a habit of not updating their t&c to reflect changes.

            • @Gravy: I clicked on the link in my app copied to private browser window and it says continue with Facebook unfortunately.

Having a look at this page - https://support.oculus.com/articles/orders-and-purchases/hea…

              And this page - https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/sdkc7f/daily_r…

Non us referrals still require facebook friends. Apparently clicking through the link will ask you to be FB friends.

The good news is the credit for the referee recently has been pretty quick (IE before the 30 days)

              • @dazza826: Hmmm, interesting. Thanks for the extra info. I tried my link via private browser and it does ask to continue with facebook login to accept your friend's referral, there's no mention of whether it has to be a facebook friend but I didnt go a step further and suspect you may be correct. At least this may make thing a little faster for referers/referees though.

                • @Gravy: Based on someone else's feedback here it looks like they didn't have to be Facebook friends to do the whole referral process so you may be right after all which is great news.

      • +1

You can say whatever you want the 2nd probably is better.
