[WA] 3,400 'Gifts from Western Australia' Two-Person Vouchers from $150 to $2200 on Arrival At Perth Airport @ WA Government

872
  • More than $500,000 of vouchers for local tours and experiences on offer
  • 'Gifts From Western Australia' campaign encourages visitors to support WA tourism operators and boost local economy as border opens
  • Promotion begins March 3, including 1,000 vouchers for international students
  • Follows the four business support packages the McGowan Government has launched since December, with business assistance throughout the pandemic now over $1.6 billion

More than $500,000 worth of free tourism vouchers will be handed out at Perth Airport this week to welcome interstate and international arrivals - providing a major boost to local tourism operators as borders ease.

The McGowan Government promotion, through Tourism WA, will begin after midnight on March 3 and encourage visitors to support local tour and experience businesses during their trip to Western Australia.

The campaign will provide 3,400 'Gifts From Western Australia' two-person vouchers, ranging in value from $150 to $2,200 for a three-day tour of Margaret River.

The vouchers offer tourism experiences from about 20 different operators, including skydiving at Rottnest Island, swimming with dolphins or touring Penguin Island, as well as sunset stargazing at the Pinnacles.

The giveaway includes 1,000 vouchers for StudyPerth to target to international students.

Tourism WA is also delivering 200 toy quokkas to Qantas to be distributed on the first flights from Sydney and Melbourne, promoting Rottnest Island and 'The World's Happiest Animal' to WA arrivals.

WA's full border opening will allow for safe travel from interstate and overseas from 12.01am March 3, with vaccination and testing requirements on arrival - the softest landing off the back of WA's world-leading vaccination rate.

A big vote of thanks from me, jv. 👍

    • +72

Awesome, thanks for staying out, jv, appreciate it.

        • +4

          You'll be missed …..

        • And WA is also more than happy to support the businesses in Qld with the money it continues to generate for the federal taxman..

        • +1

You should try a journey to the centre of the earth instead.

      • +11

I'm more bothered by why they randomly bold some words.

        • +6

          Doesn't bother me at all!

        • It is not random.

      • +25

Opinion is one thing - attention seeking and commenting on every single post without adding anything of substance is another.

        • -5

commenting on every single post w

Who comments on 'every single post' ?

      • Ozbargain is life or death

      • +1

Groupthink that’s why. The same effect would sink a business.

    • +2

I'll take it, but surely Mcgowan is holding out, mining bosses handed him millions and he can only find 500k? Imagine NSW or Victoria or Queensland giving only 500k worth of vouchers, it would last maybe a day?

      • +1

mining bosses hand him nothing - the people of WA do though.

        • +2

Do you have ANY IDEA of how much money the WA Government makes in mining royalties?

          • @Almost Banned: I most certainly do. The minerals of WA belong to the people of WA. Mining companies pay royalties to the WA government when they extract said minerals. The WA government is elected by the people of WA.

        • The whole point of the delay to opening borders is lobbying from the mining conglomerates

          • +1

@sunnyc: Not really. I work for a major WA miner and they were desperate for the borders to open so that they could bring people in from the rest of Australia who work for them. The company that I work for was mightily pissed off when McGowan delayed the opening

          • +1

@sunnyc: This is just wrong. I also work for a mining company and they were requesting the borders open ASAP. We have employees that live on the east coast and specialists we needed to bring across for contract roles (setup, design, etc.). The closures prevented/delayed a lot of projects.

Wa just beginning their covid wave while other states are coming off theirs… Best to stay away.

Spend your money in your own state.

Wa just beginning their covid wave

      WOW !!!

We should all close our borders to WA

We should all close our borders to WA

I can't believe people are downvoting this use of irony by JV.

        • Not used to it

      • +3

They would be perfectly justified to do so if they wished.

      • +1

        Brilliant !

    • That's cute that you think other states are on the downward run… NSW is on the rise again…

  • +41

I can just see the tourism Dept advertisement now "WA 100% JV free!"
    Better put more flights on!

  • +60

So after almost two years of giving the rest of Australia the middle finger, the WA government thinks they can entice people over with the hope of gifts 🤔

    • +15

Still giving the rest of Australia the finger. ..I.. (nothing personal, we just have to do it)

      Westralia forever!!!!

    • +4

No, the middle finger is still in play - you now get it on arrival

    • +22

You mean after 2 years of WA's resources sector keeping the rest of Australia afloat during the pandemic, while simultaneously avoiding the massive death tolls seen over east?

Yeah, I can see how that would inconvenience you.

      • Fabulous comment!

      • +3

With all due respect, “over east” didn’t have “massive death tolls”. Sounds like you’ve bought into the McGowan propaganda.

    • Mate, that coupon will bring the price of that activity or meal down to Sydney Harbour prices.

WA going into Level 2 Health restriction measures from Thursday 3rd March as cases continues to grow.

    McClownan…

      Good one

Am I on Facebook or OzB? Hard to tell anymore.

      • +1

        Yep.

The posted deal is cut & paste political BS, which should be filtered into just the deal facts.

        But it's a deal!

  • +31

Thought Western Australians didn't need the Eastern States

Prefer to spend my money locally where life is normal

    • +32

When WA had 0 case, do you know a lot of medical staffs in WA went to other states that need help?

      • Most states had 0 cases throughout the majority of the pandemic.

        • +1

WA boarder never closed for states with 0 local COVID Case. If you are correct, then most of states or people aren't effected by hard boarder.

      • +1

No I didn't, have you got a source on that one?

Considering WA's hospital system was collapsing without covid, I find it a bit hard to believe personally.

    • +2

      Awesome decision!

    • We don't, and good.

  • +18

Do we need a passport yet to go to WA?

    • +5

Similar Q - would my Aussie passport allow me to travel to WA?

      • +4

Make sure that it is valid for 6+ months.

        • +1

          Due to potential lockdowns?

  • +20

Nice! Another country opening up to us in Australia!

    • +1

Ask the people in WA. We were not allowed to travel even to see our dying parents.

      • +6

        That is incorrect.

You were always allowed to leave WA towards any domestic destination. International travel: same limits on leaving as elsewhere, those restrictions were up to the federal government.

Coming back: different story. Mostly still possible for residents - our current Omicron outbreak traces back to exactly that fact.

        • +9

Mate, allowing residents to leave but not come back to their homes is not being allowed to travel.

          • @GregRust: You might not have liked that there were hoops to jump through, but at almost any time you could make your way back too. It might have required applying for an exemption, it might have required quarantine, it might have required a 2-week stay in a safe state.

You don't think keeping people healthy and vulnerable people alive, and the export economy that powers the whole country in good shape was worth jumping through some hoops? Tough luck, grow up and grow a pair.

As to your definition of "not being allowed to travel", have a chat with someone from North Korea, or from former East Germany, then you know what that is like.

  • +1

I wish Quokkas were a gift from WA

  • +6

Can i use the vouchers for hotel quarantine? That's an experience!

  • +46

Far out there are some bitter easterners on this site

    • +42

Yep. Lots of people angry about not being able to go to a state that they don't even want to go to.

      • +13

Yeah probably no intention on traveling anywhere just want to whinge.

    • +18

Maybe one of the comments here is from James Turbitt, flew into Melbourne with the plan to visit his dying mother in WA but despite testing negative to Covid was denied entry. His mother passed away without him being able to see her. Perhaps the comments are by others affected by the heartless McGowen and his government.

I'm not bitter, i wasn't personally affected but I'm chosing not to spend a cent in WA.

      • +17

Up to you where you spend your money but the same kind of thing happened on the east coast over the last few years.

        • +6

          Yes, in Queensland. Similar stories.

          • @heal: Wasn't it everywhere? I thought we locked down the entire nation and this was a rare (how many over the course of COVID compared to how many people in Aus) but commonly reported storey. Unfortunate 100% I agree. But that is the difference between operating for the benefit of the people instead of the benefit of the self. We are not a libertarian society and COVID has proven it

      • +1

Considering how WA has propped up the Australian economy over the last 2 years, not sure they need your cents..

        • +4

The government definitely doesn't. The business owners definitely do. I'm going to NSW south coast this Easter to spend my cents in bushfire affected communities.

    • +2

All the people who thought we were one country, or who believed it when everyone kept telling us 'we're all in this together'?
Or do you mean the people who couldn't see dying parents or children because of the lockout?
Or maybe people whose plans made years in advance at substantial costs were ruined?
I don't blame any of them for being resentful.

      • +5

I must have missed the bit where none of the other states had lockouts or lockdowns. 🤔

        • +4

People are also free to resent other states - but the messaging of those states was not nearly as strident nor as prolonged.

          • @Almost Banned: Generally the tone of the messaging was in response to the commentary aimed at WA from federal government and some parts of the media and even then it was more subdued than it could have been.

    • -1

They'll all be underwater soon anyway.

  • +3

It’s apparently a random gift. I don’t know how they will administer it. I don’t know if it’s a deal per se

    • +7

Agreed, it seems more like a competition than a deal

  • -2

WA, along with Qld and NSW can give out all the gifts they like, I wont be availing myself of them.
My money belongs in states that foster family togetherness, not isolation, for bullshit health reasons while theyre letting sportsmen do their thing.

    • Sadly there are no states that meet your conditions, but yes, WA are certainly at the bottom of the list.

    • +9

Such as Victoria that kept its population in isolation for the world's longest lockdown? I see where you're going with this…

    • +4

Family togetherness takes a hit when someone in the family dies of COVID.

    • Please let me know where I can sign up to join the state of ‘family togetherness’? Is it anywhere in Australia?

I certainly hope you are not implying this to be NSW or VIC. I think if you were to give those states (and their leaders) a time machine, they might very well choose to do things a bit differently (ie extend isolations and lockdowns).

      • He meant that there is no family togetherness if one of your family die from covid. I.e. in a state that lets it rip.

  • +9

Why so many people from other states hate McGowan in Ozbargain?
It is understandable if they live in WA.

    • +22

Eastern states went through some horrible times, locked up for months, limited ability to travel, loss of jobs, mental health a major issue now etc. while WA thrived.

So I believe there's a bit of jealousy and the media really pushed 1 or 2 stories of people not being able to see a dying loved one, which is horrific and horrible, but there were far worse stories across the globe from countries that weren't as tough as WA, so while it's upsetting to see, I still support the tough stance.

    • +30

Because Sky News told me that Western Australians are oppressed and McGowan is basically Hitler.

    • +8

So when Andrew's mimicked NSW and the media couldn't be mad because they'd also be insulting their beloved LNP friends up north, they turned their attention to another Labor leader.

Now you have people parroting the talking points they read/heard as if they thought of this themselves.

    • +4

I know a girl who was studying interstate and became homeless because she lost her job, her Dad lost his job and couldn’t support her, her housemates left the country and McGowan wouldn’t give her a permit to go home.

    • +1

Unrelenting rules. Know a couple people who had close family members dying and WA blocked them from being with them as they passed, or from attending the funerals

      • I totally sorry to hear that, but if you lets the virus spread into WA, WA will have a lot more funerals attend, many people will never able to see their grandparents/parants/brothers/sisters, WA will have as much as death/lockdown/bussiness shut down as some other states.
In fact, WA never closed the boarder to all states with 0 local covid case, why don't you blame the one who can't manage the pandemic? Every states have had hard boarders to other states when they have 0 local covid case, WA is only one of them.

  • +4

Miss tightening of restrictions? Come down to WA, we are just about to have more restrictions than any other state!

    No thanks.
