  • How is the paste different than simmer sauce? Need both?

    • +2

Unless I’ve cooked it wrongly, but the sauce was more liquid than the paste. + the paste can cook and serve more :))

    • You an make a bigger batch of food than the sauce jar

      It tastes better

  • +4

I use this all the time the paste goes a lot further than the s, sauce 3 tbs is = to a jar of the simmer sauce I'd say if that helps .

  • Thanks OP. I'll pick up some today

    • No worries, I’m always on the hunt for good Indian food :))

      • If you have already tried, grab some of the Rotti's. You can find them in the freezer section. Cant remember if its Coles or Woolies but they are also good!

        • +1

          Aldi Rotis, better and cheaper.

FYI Patak's really isn't good Indian food. They're bottom of the barrel stuff in the UK. Same for Sharwoods.

Spice Tailor is a little bit better stuff but I hope you get to try authentic Indian food too, it's sublime.

        • agree but they can be used to supplement things, for example I use the tandoori paste as part of a marinade when making butter chicken from a recipe. The tandoori one is also pretty tasty when used as marinade and then thrown on the grill.

But yes if you are using these to make your meal from the packet, so to speak, then the spice tailor ones are a lot better although haven't seen those go on sale like they use to in a long time.

          • @Osiris: A lot of the spice tailor ones were half price last week, but can't remember if Coles or Woolworths and not all varieties

          • @Osiris: Hi Osiris
Does this recipe result in Takeaway style Butter Chicken by any chance?

            If so please share it

            Thankyou!!!!

@Mat_Lab: take-away style butter chicken ….. depends which take away as some are mild almost like tomatoe soup and some are spicy almost like chicken tikka masala for another store ….. the good thing about having a jar of paste is that you can adjust the strength vs a simmer sauce jar ……

place in melbourne now called butter chicken factory ….. seems their menu has more than one style of butter chicken to cater for the palate of a broader range of diners ….

              • @garage sale: G'day garage sale

The sweet, almost tomato soup style recipe is what I am looking for.

Would you happen to know how to make this?

  • The butter chicken is best!

  • Had some of the korma jar in my shopping trolley, but then put it back because my local Coles had the fresh stuff (Paul's brand) on clearance (in the refrigerated section)

These are crap nothing like real Indian food too much preservatives after taste

    • ahhh the discussion of “real” cuisine … like mum makes, or the neighbours mum makes and then it depends if your mum can cook or the neighbours mum is a better cook. if you stick with strict instructions from jars it might not be to your taste, but if you use it as a base and adjust it.might get closer to what you enjoy … for me salt content is what kills many indian pastes or chutneys …… you. an add your own salt but you can’t take it out from the jar …. my personal preference is sharwoods but it’s personal preference.

i’m not indian so keeping spices and cooking from scratch once a week the spices loose their pungency by the time i use them up, i have had great results with the “passage to india” sauce bags ….

      • I'm not Indian either but it is my second favorite cuisine

I agree with your comment about skills as I can say my mum make makes best ricotta and spinach ravioli and gosh it is a day worth of work but it is beside the point 😋

I am not sure it is my taste buds but those preservatives are awful no matter how you much you alter them

Homemade Indian cuisines are not that hard to cook with fresh ingredients there are literally no preservatives or any prepacked sauces

Short trip to local Indian grocery store helps me all the time, I usually pick up MDH branded spices and most of the time they have recipe behind them which is easy to use.

Indian rotis/ paronthi are so easy to make ,10 kg whole meal flour costs less than $15 and make make literally 100s of rotis - all you need is water and oil

Freshness and no artificial ingredients is what I love about Indian cuisines the most and these jars have a fair few artificial ingredients

  • +1
    • yep, i buy these for have with thai food …they reheat really well in the sandwich press.. these roti are malaysian style i think (?) i see it being made fresh at some malaysian eateries, and i haven’t seem it being made fresh at any indian eateries, and i thought indian breads were more naan or parathas style , but then nothing like some fusion cuisine if it tastes good ….

      • They are south Indian version from what I understand

North and south Indian dishes are way too different

What we eat at restaurants is north Indian/Punjabi/Mughali food

South Indian is mostly rice and coconut based as base ingredients

East Indians mainly Bengali are big on Fish and again is nothing like north Indian and is also imo Chinese inspired and West Indian are best known for their snack and fusion food

        Never get boring

  • For those asking about butter chicken recipes like a restaurant. There is no such thing, the recipe is like the Illuminati, you only have access to it as a restaurant owner. Literally, not one recipe on the internet, jar or packet comes even close to the deliciousness of a proper Butter Chicken

    • The sadness is damning and real!

My search will need to continue.

      • Sadly but it’s true haha

Even my mate he’s Indian and can’t even replicate close to restaurant level :/

        • He needs to be properly motivated I reckon.
