First time poster. Building my first gaming rig and this seems a great deal for someone who is not trying to overclock the CPU. 1% surcharge applies for select payment methods.

Cheapest pricing for any 12600 on PCP is $379, and for same motherboard is $279 = $658

Would appreciate thoughts from PC builders much more experienced than me re; Z690 vs B660 (is the price difference worth the potential gain from overclocking your system?)

  • 12600kf is twice as powerful as my old 9700k, which I paid $800 for?

I might be sold for an upgrade.

  • This is definitely a bargain - not a huge benefit to manual overclocking these days what with Tau power limits and aggressive turbo boost, but the K series SKUs will boost higher than their non-K counterparts. Having the Z690 board in this combo, when you aren't really paying more for it over buying something like a 12400F and B660 board separately, is just a "nice to have" in case you did want to tinker with manual overclocking in the future.

  • There's also a 12600KF + B660M DS3H bundle for $539 -> $485 after discount, if you don't need all the features of the Mortar motherboard

    • +1

Definitely worth springing the extra for the Mortar board, not only because it's a better chipset but also because it has Wifi AX and BT 5.0 built in (even if you dont need it immediately, worth having. i recently switched from running powerline ethernet to AX wifi in my house because it is so much faster and less hassle).

      • What wifi router are you using

      • What are your thoughts about getting a 12th Gen Intel or wait until 5800x3d to release later next month? I'm not in a rush to build my currently and can afford to wait

        • Definitely wait until Q3 thats when all of the major tech launches for 2022 are happening.

AMD Zen 4 (Ryzen 7000) with new AM5 platform, Intel 13th Gen, Intel Alchemist GPU's, AMD GPU's, Nvidia 40 series GPU's and new PCIe Gen5 power supplies with 16pin power cable that will be on next gen GPU's.

All well worth waiting for before deciding on a new build.

  • I haven't been following the mother board and CPU market that closely. I've heard from LTT that the 12th gen intel are good chips so I was thinking if im gonna upgrade might as well be now. I'm not in desperate need of an upgrade though. Is it worth holding out? I'm already currently HODL on a 3000 series gpu.

    • +3

If you need an upgrade, upgrade to this. If you don't, don't.

Just beware if you HODL forever, you'll still be using a Nokia 5110 in a world of brain-implanted smartphones (then again, maybe thats not such a bad thing).

      • Like me, running a 2011 build i7 2600k in 2022

        • LOL you're not the only one buddy. You got EXACTLY the same cpu as I do hahahah It's still a beast and runs everything I throw at it fast. Although starting to get BSOD cause of the memory modules so am looking to starting a new build. Waiting for good prices.

          • @NeoX: The AStone southbridge is causing me issues. CPU and RAM are still doing just fine.

    • If you're gaming at 1440p, note that you'll almost certainly be GPU limited all the way down to a 3600/10400F unless you're on a 3090 class GPU. This trend will only increase as games keep shuffling forward.

The HODL philosophy as I understand it isn't just about waiting for prices to fall, its also about considering the value of the purchases you are making.

      • You say GPU limited but then mention CPU's? Are you saying youll need a higher class CPU to run the GPU's effectively or vice versa?

        • He's saying that unless you're running a lowish-end cpu like a 10400f or below, you won't get a significant fps increase in games by upgrading to a high end cpu.

Ofc this depends on what gpu you got, what resolution you got and what games you play.

  • Which is better for building a gaming pc, this deal or the 5600x with the x570s Aorus?

    • This one, 12th gen has better single core performance, which is very important for games

  • Bought the same combo last 20 days ago for $602. Mortar is good, FYI Crucial RGB will not sync with it. But, definitely a good deal.

    • What did you use instead

      • Crucial only, I got to know this after my build :P Now, I just use the default light settings, the box sits below my desk anyway.

  • i was really surprised just how much better this rates vs my Ryzen 9 3950X across the board. Really impressive. Time for an upgrade as mainly use for gaming and not multi core workloads.

  • And today the announced my X370 board gets Zen 3 so will continue on the AMD path.

  • Can this do onboard GPU?

    • No I think the KF's don't have in-built graphics.

    • Just saw there's the same bundle with the non 4 for an extra $45. Very tempting just to have that flexibility

  • Thinking about buying this for my first desktop build! Seems good for both gaming and workstation

  • I wonder if I should get this or go ryzen 5600x and b550 motherboard for $150……….it'll work out to be cheaper and don't need to get a HSF for the cpu as ryzen comes with one. Won't be oc at all and just for gaming
