Qantas cancelled our flight last Sept, but refund still not processed, and custom service seems non-existent

    • +2

how long did you wait on the phone for? (3hrs for me)

      • tried to contact via online form and Facebook, no reply at all

        • +3

Would highly recommend a merchant chargeback if possible, or raising with Fair Trading.

          • @cyssero: Chargeback is the best option but a lot of banks have refused due to COVID-19. I got into trouble with Virgin Australia with that one.

Saying that Fair Trading NSW is a waste of time. They take 8 weeks before they even assign you a person. Then they will tell you, you need to wait for Qantas recommend refund period and double that. Currently Qantas is 8 weeks so you need to wait 16 weeks before they even look into the matter. Previously to this it was 12 weeks so 24 weeks.

After all of that Fair Trading NSW has no ability to legally enforce any action against Qantas for an individual. You need to go to SAT or courts to have an enforcable action.

Email Alan Joyce. Not even joking. I did that after months of fluffing about with all sorts of issues. Obviously he won't be checking those emails but that stuff gets escalated to a 'special' team who typically resolve issues quite fast.

          • +1

@gimme: There is also the Airline Customer Advocate which should have a similar outcome (escalate to a more responsive area).

No idea whether the number of disgruntled customers during the pandemic has had an impact on their effectiveness, but I tried them once pre-pandemic and got a result.

          • +1

@gimme: Haha reminds me of that time I got shafted by Flight Centre. I googled Flight Centre + manager + regional + state + other random words, and tried cc-ing different iterations of their names + @flightcentre.com.au. I also tried iterations of Graham Turner (CEO). In a couple of hours I got an email from the same girl I was dealing with asking for bank details to refund me.

    • +4

Customer service has seriously dipped post covid. Call times are 2hrs +, they never reply on twitter any longer or anything. It's worryingly bad.

      • +5

That's because they accepted a huge payout from the government and then laid off all of their staff.

      • +3

I've waited 5hrs+ prior to covid too so not even an excuse.

    • +7

Ye I find their customer service appalling as a full service airline. I don’t know how they get ranked as a top 10 airline in the world.

      • Probably by people based overseas who don't regularly use them.

Qantas is a junk airline to it's staff and with customer service in my view.

        • +1

We desperately need another airline to compete with them. They have no motivation to improve without competition.

          • -1

            @Hodlman Sachs:

We desperately need another airline to compete with them

Why don't you start a competing airline?

    • +4

      I'm in the same boat.
Flights cancelled July last year. Paid with BPay. Received an email in October asking for bank details. Nothing ever happens though. I've called about 10 times and every time they tell me there was an error, it will be resolved and just to wait, but nothing happens and always get told the same.
Two Fridays ago they told me there were making payment and would come through on Monday, but again nothing happened.
It's very frustrating as I don't know what to do in the situation and I'm just being constantly lied to by the customer service team.

    • +1

'or raising with Fair Trading' Don't wait any longer, do this now. Qantas ignored my attempts to get a refund for months. Only way way to go through Fair Trading. Wish I'd done it sooner.

    • I cancelled a flight in January and received a refund to my card in March. Was expecting to be stiffed with a credit so that was a pretty good surprise.

    • This and they ask 8 weeks processing time then nothing happens after 8 weeks.

    • I wonder if we can just go to one of their counters in airport and stay until they resolve it on the spot.

  • Is domestic business worth it?

    • Shorter flight times and the gap between economy/business seats/perks aren't nearly as big as international so I personally wouldn't consider paying extra.

      • +7

The 30% off only applies to economy.

And unless you are in the a330 on a 3hr+ flight then business isn't really worth it….better off just using lounge access for food/booze and saving the points or $$$

        • +1

Coast to Coast aka Perth to Sydney or Melbourne on A330 and if there still running the 787 (Not 787 does not include free wifi) is worth the business class redemption.

The problem with international business class or economy class flights is the surcharge. Really economy flights for international end up costing similar to buying a cash ticket for economy. Saying that there is value with the free cancelation for point redemption during COVID-19. Outside of this I would say your wasting your time and money. I live in Perth and our premier likes to changes things quickly so you never know if the door will be closed tomorow.

          • @pandadude: I don’t see how you got that figure? It’s $163 and 17500 points Syd to BKK

            • @UberIsCool: What date?

Also I fly from Perth so most of my flights are either other airlines or the flight is transit.

This means generally we don't get discount during these deals.

There only two direct flights for international using Qantas. That is Perth to Singapore and Perth to London (not operating).
There never cheap if you can get them.

              • +1

@pandadude: SYD to BKK, May dates. Didn't check PER.

                • @UberIsCool: if its cheaper its cheaper. I would recommend go with that.

                  If it direct and Qantas.

        • Not sure where the 30% remark is coming from? Or was that directed at the person that was asking the question? I'd agree with the A330 being a very nice step up (forgot about those since it has been so long since I took a flight lol) but even if business domestic classic rewards were to be included in the sale I personally wouldn't bite… can see why some others might though.

    • +7

International yes, domestic only for flights over 2 hours. If you are flying for leisure and you land the right FA your drink will be topped as fast as you can empty it. I've had flights where I've gotten off the plane absolutely shitfaced

    • On an Airbus A330, yep.

    • No

    • yes on a330 only or 787s.

    • Only travelling between east and west, just not enough time to make it worth it on a Melb/Syd/Bris hop.

  • +16

To be honest even with 30% many of these redemptions aren't that great, it's a shame they won't discount/release more Business seats….the big bonus is the flexibility and free cancellation to book a speculative flight.

e.g. Sydney to Singapore it is 35k points and $314 in taxes…you can currently book flights with Singapore Airlines for $550 return anyway and it's a better airline, flying better planes and with a range of flight times per day.

    • +3

Don't forget the free birthday cake on Singapore Airline. Need to book in advance.

      • Wait Singapore gives you a free Birthday cake? Since when?!

        • +1

It's more birthday slice and a glass of wine if your in economy for more than 3 hours. Need to pre-book or let your travel agent know. Note it is complimentary. I think there an allowance of few days either side of your birthday. I can confirm this 3 years ago since I did flew Singapore Airlines in economy on my birthday and they did give me a slice of cake, a glass of apple juice and a card.

If your a Solitaire PPS which can only be achieved by booking business and first class flights on Singapore Airlines I believe this is auto loaded. But I mean if you can drop SGD $50,000 you should be able to expect a decent birthday cake.

For those who have status with Velocity Gold. Be warned Singapore Airline has two lounges in Singapore and you only get to the "Gold Lounge". No shower. Saying that I believe the Gold Lounge is closed right now. The lounge you want access to is the Silver Kris Lounge. Don't ask me why Silver is better than gold here.

    • +1

These redemptions are good for Christmas flights but of course Qantas also knows this so they don't release any award seats for Christmas.

    • +1

The business reward flight availability is really bad, and even then it doesn't seem to be the value I expected. I'm surprised people were paying 1.2c per point before covid, seems to be barely worth that for redeeming business reward flights and I was under the impression that's the best value redemption and hard to score.

      • There are still some good value redemption routes out there, just a bit harder to find and usually with one world partner airlines.

Traditionally flying Qantas out of Australia is both hard to find reward flights and relatively high surcharges.

Unfortunately Emirates has recently destroyed their redemption value with a 300% increase on fees.

    • Can you book that with Singapore air during peak season and school holidays? This sale might suit families with kids that can only travel during holiday periods. I was able to book one way to Singapore in Jan for 17k points and $162 ADL>SIN compared to $700 via Singapore air.

  • +2

Looks like it's just Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney domestically

  • +1

    No London, boooo

  • Does anyone know whether we can cancel a classic reward flight (international) without penalty?

  • Can you upgrade to a business rewards flight after booking an economy fare?

  • nothing for Japan :(

    • +1

Japan's not even open to tourist.

  • +12

Not that this is a bad deal, but I am negging because I booked classic rewards business class flights to Bangkok and just last week my outbound flight got cancelled with no alternative flights available with classic rewards, forcing me to pay full price out of pocket for the same flight in economy. Very dodgy practice by Qantas.

    • Sorry to hear that mate, I booked my flight just now then I saw your comment, do you mind tell me your original flight No.? Thanks

      • +1

QF412 MEL to SYD and connecting flight QF23 SYD to BKK.

        • +1

Oh damn, I got the same one, the confirm email came as QF23 6PM - 6AM flight, but on the itinerary and the original booking page, it was a QF23 9am-6pm flight, Dodgy as heck…

They must have fired tons of IT when Covid hit, can’t explain such poor operates system

    • +2

I've been having the same issues with an NZ trip, Qantas seem to put ghost bookings before they actually figure out the flight roadmap and then cancel flights randomly when they figure out the demand doesn't exist and hardly factor in the customer's needs. It takes them a few days after the flight is removed from the schedule to even cancel it within bookings themselves.

One of my rewards flights was cancelled with no alternative option on the same day offered although there were plenty of cash flights available, luckily could just move it to the day after.

Hard to have much trust in their system currently while quite a few of the flights are effectively placeholders.

      • +1

On the flip side I too had a flight cancelled for an upcoming trip during Easter.

I had booked Cairns > Brisbane > Melb.. as it was almost 1/2 the price of a direct from Cairns > Melb - during Easter.

This morning I had a strange message suggesting one of my flight legs has been cancelled and a new option would be available soon.. I jump into the app and the double price Cairns > Melb flight was an option to change to… so naturally I took that up.. didn't charge me more and I basically got upgraded (in my mind) to a better flight without a stop. Winning!

So I guess it can work both ways in certain situations.

      • Wow this is treating customers like complete scum

    • please get some help

      • -1

Tell that to an Aussie who was stuck overseas for two years

You are so naive. There would be a completely different response if covid was handled by health rather than politicians

        • -3

I have a feeling there would be far greater restrictions if covid policies were 100% based on health outcomes and easing the burden on hospitals vs being a combination of health/economics/politics. Of course the politicians love saying it's only based on health advice but realistically that wouldn't be ideal.

    • This is a thing of the past, there be riots if they did this again

      • -1

They? We did this. We let them . It will happen again. We just do what we are told.

  • +3

$297 + 35k points for a nice getaway to Bangkok, thank you OP.

  • Need to update the description it’s only specific pairs of cities and doesn’t include coast to coast

    • I've found some coast to coast flights discounted. Weirdly only ones that connect e.g. Perth to Brisbane via Sydney for 14200 + charges (would have been 20300 without discount I believe?).

  • Appalling customer service from Qantas recently, so it'll be a while before I use them again. Operator cancelled our flights in December, and we are still trying to get a refund on from them. Takes 2+ hours to get anyone on the call center, and everyone we've spoken with was rude or unhelpful.

  • Similarly had a very negative experience with Qantas classic reward redemptions. Two negative experiences in separate comments.

Booked SYD - NAN (Fiji) a few weeks in advance, got to the airport and they told me my ticket hadn’t been issued because my payment was never made. They allege that I paid via PayPal and the money never came through on their side so they never issued a ticket. (See more re PayPal in following comment).

This is notwithstanding that: 1) the trip appeared in my Qantas app and the QFF points were deducted from my account with the booking reference noted; 2) Qantas made no effort to either ask for the money again or inform me that the ticket had not been issued.
Thankfully at the airport - it appeared that a seat had been reserved - all I had to do was pay the taxes and they issued a ticket on the spot. (And this is ignoring the fact that they refused to acknowledge our RAT test declarations which were compliant with Fijian law).

They made a half arsed effort to call me once the day before my flight to address the issue, and left a generic voicemail asking I call back urgently on 131313 (general number), but I couldn’t get through due to excessive wait times - and I was flying from PER - SYD on Virgin the day before.

    • +1

Second experience is similar. I booked a classic rewards redemption from NAN - MEL to come home and the ticket was never issued. After dealing with the above, I tried to be prophylactic (and thank god I did) because they said the booking was not paid, the reservation was cancelled, and now there are no more seats and I couldn’t book. The lady on the phone maintained it was my fault for not making payment, even though she acknowledged that she could see my credit card details on their system (last four digits) and my card is not saved to my account. This indicates I paid directly with my card - there is no way I could have put my card details in and not hit a pay button. Or put in the wrong card details (which she alleges) as I import them directly from BitWarden. They didn’t try and blame PayPal this time - just me.

Since there were no more economy (or any) classic rewards tickets available, the only remedy they could offer me were to: book again on a different day, book and pay the full commercial fare, or fly in via Sydney on a connecting flight with Jetstar which would kill 6-8 hours of valuable time on a 1.5 day trip to Melbourne.

Thankfully a business classic rewards seat became available over the next couple of days and I reluctantly parted with 3x the number of points to book a seat on the original flight. 24 hours later a ticket still hadn’t been issued and I had to spend another few hours on hold chasing them to issue the ticket. When I paid this fare - I noted there was no PayPal portal available when paying the taxes. Not sure if Qantas has been gaslighting me, or if they pulled PayPal from their system because they were having repeat issues.

Something is seriously wrong with their automated systems and no one is taking responsibility. Be warned.

      • -1

there is no way I could have put my card details in and not hit a pay button.

How hard is it to check if your card was charged or not. Pending transaction is shown straight away, or your available credit goes down by the transaction amount. I’d suggest doing it at the very least when international booking is involved.

      • Hey there - have you managed to fix this? I have this issue for the last 12 months with every classic reward flight that I book, regardless of the payment method used. Discussed at length with customer service over the phone but have never got anywhere. Got caught off guard when it first started happening, but now I just get my partner to book all my flights…

        • No clue. The most recent flight I booked they accepted payment but there was at least a 12 hour delay in having the ticket issued so I called them to chase to make sure it landed in my inbox. Seems weird that they have to prompt their ticketing team to issue the ticket.
To be safe - just triple check the ticket gets issued or otherwise, check availability online and book over the phone. DM me for a useful phone number to call….

  • The taxes kill it. Cheaper to pay directly.

  • Booked MXP-HEL-SIN-SYD last night. The SIN-SYD flight was BA economy. Reckon it's worth cancelling and rebooking with SIN-SYD on QF? Would save 12,000 points all up, times are the same.

    • Sounds like a lot of fuss and potential for issues for only 12000 points to me.

      • +1

Yeah good point, I wanted to fly BA too. I'll keep the booking.

        • +1

Why the hell would you want to fly BA?

          • @madreece: Never flown them before, just thought I'd try them out for something different.

All the other legs on my itinerary are Business while the BA flight is Economy, which isn't going to be too fun.

            • @jeppetto367: I would find it hard to believe that their economy class could in anyway be worse than their business class!
The worst business class I have flown on any airline.

  • Do you need a valid passport to book one of these flights. All our passports are expired but am confident I can get them all renewed by September. Or do you need to sort out the passport validity before you can book?

    • +2

You don't need a valid passport to book a flight.

Source: just booked an international flight the other week with an expired passport.

  • SYD - AMS - SYD (AUG) 130400 points and $721 ~ with Singapore the other week it was $1100 all up, the points are near worthless.

  • Has anybody been able to use the $20 jab voucher they gave out?

  • seeing SYD -> HNL for 22k pts + $227, is that cheaper than normal? seems about the same

  • Hawaii doesn’t look too bad actually, 44k of points for a return flight. Now the resort fees for the hotels over there though…
