  • Why the curved shaft?

  • paid 270 a month ago damn

  • How does it compare to AEG?

  • Which other ones are on special?
What is the duration of this special?
How do you know it is on special, Bunnings never indicates?

      Circular Saw was $312 - https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18v-165mm-brushless-circu…

      Router was $257 https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-18v-brushless-laminate-tr…

      Planer was $330 https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-lxt-18v-82mm-brushless-aw…

Just to mention a few, I tend to check prices regularly and check “Price Hipster”

      • +2

I have all 3 of these and they are awesome tools. One day i will learn how to use them. :)

        • Me too, I got the router at $199 through price matching over a year ago. Probs my favourite and most used tool when building or renovating furniture

          • @JPJ: Good price, and yes the trim router is my favourite out of the three but i use the circular saw a bit more often. Been looking at making a bench top inlay piece for the trim router and have some t-track for a fence so i can use it as a bench router too. It's awesome how far battery and brushless motor tech has come.

            • @LowRange: I gave that a try with my old router using normal alluminium U channels worked well just had to use two clamps to hold the fence. But would definetly like to try again with t tracks. Share a pick if you end up making one.

  • same price at Total tools

  • does anyone know if a petrol speed feed head will fit on this

    • It's M8 1.25 pitch thread. If you find another head with the same thread then it will fit. I know a lot of petrol ones are M10 however.

  • I can't figure out what the differences are between dur189 and dur192 apart from a curved shaft and a some more dollars. Doesn't say much on makita or bunnings website.

    DUR192 —https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-lxt-ope-18v-brushless-line-trimmer-kit_p0255459

    • 4ah op vs 5ah in yours

differences in number of speed settings with yours having a variable speed trigger.

      3.4kg vs 3kg

    • Can someone tell me what's the point of having a curve in the shaft

      • +1

        Probably just ergonomics

      • +2

I think it's about power delivery and ergonomics. The curved shaft models are comfier to use, but the curved shaft necessitates a flexible driveshaft hence a little less power delivered down at the business end. Hence they're better suited for domestic use.
Straight shaft units can use a more rigid / stronger driveshaft, hence more power delivered to the head. So you're moving away from domestic lawn use and heading towards brushcutter territory.
Happy to be corrected on this though.

        • +2

I think the motor sits right at the bottom with these electric trimmers, so no drive shaft

        • Thanks for the insights.

I think I would go for the 192 because it can be "disassembled" for storage.

    • +2

      In addition to the other comment;
      Spindle size: M8 x 1.25RH vs M10 x 1.25 LH
Max Power output: 0.24kW vs 0.46kW
      Rotation: Clockwise vs Counter-clockwise
      Ref: page 6
Edit: 3 +Auto speed selection & reverse button vs 2 speed
So not sure which is a better machine, I would say the 192!

      • Thanks for that reference sheet - really useful. "Not sure which is the better machine" - agree, seems tough to compare. The 192 has a 400g lighter base weight, and but not the ability to take 2.4mm line. Don't know about how useful a variable speed trigger will be as I suspect I will just have it max throttle all the time. The curved shaft is helpful though. The 192's larger capacity battery can be useful for other tools as well… tough call.

        • I know, its a bit confusing the 192 power output is 0.46kw with 2mm line, but the 189 is 0.24kw with 2-2.4mm line, does not make sense? But I think you should be able to put 2.4mm in the192. I have for a while the most basic cordless Makita trimmer and it came with 1.5mm line and it got cut too often, so tried 2mm and it worked fine since.

      • Thanks for posting the reference link. Looks like the 192 is a step up, a bit closer to being a commercial model over the 189.

I think I'll go for the 192, more power, bigger spindle to upgrade heads of need be and a bigger battery for $27, I think it's worth it.

Anyone can compare this and ryoby brushless trimmer ? I'm with ryoby system atm

  • +4

This is also good value, 2 x 5Ahm batteries and dual fast charger for $460 vs $545 at Total Tools.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/makita-lxt-ope-2-x-18v-loop-hand…

    • Good value, comes with redemption of free Makita blower (I got this blower and it's amazing).

    • Tempting! how this trimmer compares to curve shaft one?

    • I just got one. Cheers

    • Thanks, opted for this one too. Nicely balanced and for anyone interested in the ezy-work head upgrade as mentioned in this comment - it comes with a similar one out of the box. According to the manual the head model no is UN-74L

    • Thanks for mentioning this. End up buying this one (DUR368LPT2), a decent Line Trimmer, plus a free powerful blower. I am going to put my Stihl FS38 and BG59 on Gumtree.

  • I'm not in the Makita system (not in Ryobi, Ozito or Aldi either) and would like to get a trimmer such as in this deal. My Bosch electric lawn mower is on its last legs.

Is there a good value cordless Makita lawn mower as well? I would consider my lawn size to be small-medium - about 100m2 - and flat.

    • Makita has offer for selected Mowers, you get by redemption free cordless line trimmer DUR192.
Don't know if Makita is best for gardening tools tho..

    • I have the 460mm 36v mower, it's been fantastic so far. Can do my 360m2 lawn comfortably on a single pair of 5ah batteries

  • +1

I just got the Ego Carbon fibre powerload trimmer for $400 (normally $499) using Zip pay at Sydney Tools online . Comes with two batteries and charger.

    https://sydneytools.com.au/product/ego-st1521eb-56v-25ah-lit…

    • Good buy, they have on sale the mower kit + free blower for $799, so if you get extra discount using Zip pay would be amazing price.. Ego best in class for gardening tools.
How did you get another $100 off using Zip Pay, is that offer expired?

      • Its the 42cm? They have a 47cm and a 52cm as well. Obviously prices go up for the bigger mowers.

Can also use to buy the makita.

      • I only got 1 x $100 off. You pay the full $499 with Zip Pay on Sydney Tools. You then get $20 Reward for each $100 youve spent which you then use to offset the total cost you need to pay on Zip Pay.

It is still available till the end of tomorrow I believe.

Can you rotate the head 90 degrees on this to edge grass

    • I'd like to know this too.
All the pictures show horizontal brush cutting, no edging.
Can this easily work for vertical cutting? My corded trimmer does this perfectly, but a pain in the cord for the naturestrip on a corner block.

    • +1

      Cannot, I read the manual

    • +1

I just flip the trimmer so that the string is perpendicular to the ground when trimming edges.

  • is there a compatible lawn mower. if so is it any good also?

  • anyone tired the redemption? I kept getting some claim number error which i dont have

    • redemption for what? does not mention any..

    • I didn't have any issues with submitting the free redemption blower, i bought from a different site but sent the redemption via Makita's own website. In just a few minutes i got:

Well that escalated, started looking at this deal, then deals with more skins, plus redemption's and wound up $1,189 poorer with this deal which had a bonus whipper snipper head and free brushless blower https://www.makita.com.au/power-garden/category/multi-functi…

  • Are there any bonus redemption for this trimmer or the two brushless drills combo/kit?

  • Thanks, but end up getting the DUR192.

    • Good choice I think, I went for the 192 too

  • Anyone know how these compare to the Ozito PXC 18V Cordless Line Trimmer?

Have had the Ozito for years and although it's got plenty of power and has worked well in the past, the variable speed trigger has been playing up worse and worse and now tends to "jam" quite often during use where it won't reliably press all the way down, limiting the power and causing a whole lot of fatigue as you have to squeeze the everloving crap out of it to get any power at all, and even then it only unjams seemingly at random, incredibly frustrating. Also the safety switch sucks ergonomically as you have to be pushing it up with your thumb at all times while operating, it's really destroying my wrists at this point…

Seems the Makita would be quite a bit better ergonomically even without the variable trigger (don't care too much for that anyway), I would love to hear from anyone who's tried both.

    • +1

Answering my own question as I ended up buying this Makita to replace my worn out Ozito.

The DUR189 is a significant improvement ergonomically. It's super light, and unlike the PXCLTS-0182, the safety switch isn't a medieval torture instrument, so I can get twice the work done in half the time, and without having hurt myself in the process. Should have switched sooner.

  • Is this still on? Price shows $272 now.
