Also $5.00 off at the moment on my eBay

        • Thanks, bought this one with $5 off instead :)

        • How'd you get the $5 off?

      • Nice find. Great for just over $10

  • Showing $21.69 for me

    • Try to add from below the main box. It should be available but as a backorder.

I just use the FOGO kitchen caddy as a knock box. It's not broken yet. Do you east-coasters have those?

    • +1

This knock box is smaller than a Fogo caddy (about half the width of the slim Line versions), so depends how much kitchen counter space you have.

I probably would've used the fogo bin if I thought about it, but you may eventually break the bin

    • Yeah I'm buggered when I break the edge of my FOGO bin

  • +1

do the red boxes go faster ??

  • +10

    The Breville is the go

    • Breville is the best! Love it.

    • +2

Grindenstein owner here - yes the Breville has more capacity, but by crikey it's noisy. The rubberised coating on the bar is brilliant at suppressing the noise from puck removal. Ours is +10 years old, and still looks as good as new.

      • Lol noisey, 6 taps a day, heard a grinder!!

      • We have 2 Grindensteins. The found the larger one got mouldy quickly in summer in SE Qld so we limit it to winter. Still gets mouldy if we get lazy and don't empty it often enough.

        • Hehe mrs w drops her teabags in with my perfect pucks™ from my BES920 - have to empty daily into worm bucket. Yes here in SEQ mould-friendly weather…

    • Had a cheap eBay one for years, got a new coffee machine that came with a Breville one. Couldn't believe how many improvements they made to a simple thing like a knock box haha. So much easier to clean!

  • I knock the used coffee on the edge of my bin and it falls straight in the bin
No knock box and cleaning of the box required.

    • +3

This is how I broke my bin. :|

      • +1

I dunno what bin you have but I've been doing it for years and nothing has broken

        • +4

you really should take a rest. Are you tired?

        • Super bin

        • +1

Might be less about the bin, and more about the the portafilter you own.

Could probably break skulls with mine. I've used it on the edge of a compost bin a bit, but I'm pretty sure I'll crack the rim of it if I keep doing that. It's like hitting it with a hammer.

I do have one of these Avanti bins though. Feels like it will cope with it better.

      • I broke a bin too. When I say "bin", it was a $5 square bucket from Bunnings.

So I got a proper bin with strong lip from Ikea, no worries. Except when the basket falls out with the grounds :-) (don't bang so hard!)
But now the FOGO caddy is on the benchtop, so easier than opening the bin.

    • Yecch… a lovely bin juiced latte?

      • All these people suggesting a bin must be making coffee just for themselves.

      • Knock it to the edge of bin, which is a 0.05sec manoeuvre, and wash the portafilter like usual. I really don't see the need for a knock box, takes up space and another item to wash and rinse.

My bin is hard plastic with bin liner and lid. Just knock it on the edge of the plastic and the coffee drops right out.
But don't leave the coffee into he portafilter too long or it takes more knock force to get it out

    • +2

I did this without any issues too… until my partner saw it and got grossed out haha. Now I knock the puck on the edge of my hand over the bin, no issues

  • I ordered one.. thanks for sharing

These knock boxes made of plastic are bright and cheerful but pretty useless for most people who drink a couple of espressos or more a day. Far too small and far too light.

What you need is a knock box that has decent capacity (so you don't have to empty it every day); high sides (so the grinds go into the box and not spray all over the place); have a decent heft (so that it doesn't move around when you give it a decent whack to remove stubborn grinds) and both the knock bar and the base is well insulated to limit noise and damage.

For the price I reckon you can't go past the Sunbeam EM0100 Bang Bang. It's made of coated metal, will not move around your bench when you use it, has a sturdy rubber base and knock bar that is easily removable for cleaning and has a large capacity so you only need to empty it every few days or so. The only downside is that it is not suitable for the dishwasher as the coating might come off and so needs to be hand cleaned and rinsed.

At around $32 it (and the Breville Knock Box) are the only knock boxes I would consider. Nowhere as pretty as this but a thousand times more serviceable. And its capacity means I can throw small amounts of dry vegetable scraps in it as well when I'm cooking - for the compost bin.

I've got a Grindenstein knock box that costs around the same price which gets high ratings in reviews but that has been sitting in the pantry barely used for all the reasons mentioned above.

      +1 on the sunbeam

    • +3

I don't think you need a big knock box. They take up too much room and if you don't empty them often enough the grounds start to go mouldy at the bottom. I do get that sometimes grounds don't go into the box if you're not careful. My wife complains that I'm messy but somehow she doesn't ever miss. I don't agree with the weight complaint though. We have a small one and don't have any issues with getting stubborn grounds out etc.

    • Yeah I bought this for 40$ and swear by it.

      Looked through all of them.

  • All my friends who make coffee at home have a knock box and they reckon it's a must have. I agree for cafes it's a must have (knock tubes), for home use unless you regularly pull a few shots back to back, why is there a need to have a temporary storage for coffee pucks? Just dispose the puck directly into the bin, wash the basket/portafilter then air dry.

    • +1

Pulling a decent shot leaves a puck that sits pretty tight in the portafilter. You need somewhere to bang it to remove it and a knock box is simply convenient. Makes the clean up so much easier. A matter of convenience and practicality.

      • I just bang it against my hand. Puck falls into the compost bin. One the very rare occasion it wont come out (about once ever 50 times), a fork does the job. Saves having a needless object cluttering up bench space.

All these people needing to save 3 second in their day, having spent 22 minutes warming up their machine, weighing the coffee, grinding it, tamping it down, heating the cups, doing a cleansing purge, frothing their milk…

        • +1

Some of us have delicate hands.

It's not a must have, but it makes getting the puck out a lot easier.

  • +1

I think I'll just keep using an old yogurt container. The knock bar would be nice but not really necessary for me. Maybe if it was $5 I'd get one.

  • You don't need this. Get a compost bin and get an available stick from a fallen tree or something.

    Bang bang boom.

  • +1

I don’t get why these knock boxes are all priced so high.

Seriously $16 for probably the same amount of plastic in a $5 lunchbox?

  • +2

I have had this and it certainly has flaws. For starters its simply not wide enough, half the time the grinds would miss and go all over the kitchen bench. After a few months use the rubber had worn away on the sides of the bar, which caused the plastic ends to call off. Also, the rubber underneath is appallingly thin, it made my kitchen bench shake violently.

I took a punt on this and have not looked back. Nice large size and amazing shock absorbency. Can't comment on comparison to the Sunbeam mentioned further up in thread.

  • I was using a Dreamfarm Grindenstein knock box - similar concept to the one in this post - and moved away to a knock box drawer.

Sits beneath my Niche grinder - one less footprint at my coffee station - and pucks are hidden too. Certainly a different price point though.

  • Now on back order

Usually dispatched within 2 to 4 weeks.

  • Knock three times….

  • +1

You had me at Knock Box!

  • I recommend getting a pale with lid from bunnings. Much more effective and you can seal the lid so you don't get fruit flies and its solid enough to knock it against.
