My allergies (dust, dustmites etc) are absolutely terrible. Is it worth giving this a shot? Considering buying it before the end of the promo

      • +4

Are your allergens bigger than 300 nm?

        • +32

          lemme bust out my ruler

          • @dm02: I would say yes its worth a short ( I only use mine in my bedroom but its helped a tonne )

            • +4

              @TerryJustTerry: helped how?

              • +3

@fredblogs: For me I have asthma and my room would get too dusty in the air for me to breathe comfortably.

I used to live in the mountains and never had an issue but when i got to a single room in the city it got a lot harder to comfortably breathe when relaxing and stuff due to dust and probably pollution.

I bought the older generation of this device (then upgraded after a couple of years) and it has been a massive help in terms of just cleaning the air, reducing dust and other annoying things (it helps i have found with cigarette smoke that comes in the window or bushfire smoke).

TLDR: Helps with cigarette smoke, bushfire smoke, reducing bad odors and DUST (in caps because it helps a tonne).

      • I bought a 3H after the bushfires in 2019/2020 but I've mostly used it for managing hayfever while sleeping at night or working in the home office.

We still need Claratyne etc to manage hayfever. But the 3H reduces my sneezing fits when there's pollen drifting in from outside a closed window.

I'm also using it as white noise for my toddler to go sleep. But now I start to drift off when the aircon fan speed is high while driving on a hot day. 😬

It came in handy the other day when air quality outside was Very Poor 225 µg/m³ PM2.5. It was about 45 µg/m³ PM2.5 inside. 3H helped reduce it to about 3 in a bedroom room.

      • Very doubtful that you'll notice any difference (aside possibly from a placebo effect). I have family members with dust mite allergy and air purifiers made no discernable difference. Immunotherapy drops made a huge difference.

        • Just using the medium air purifier from Kmart, and in about 10min it cleans up the room and I stop sneezing.

I'm allergic to work, would this help?

  • +13

This one works out to be only $203 with voucher PLDTCH (eBAY Plus):

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/373768900561

    • +2

Good find, although it requires having eBay Plus (paid subscription) in the first place. You should post yours though

      • +3

Yes but you can sign up for 1 month of ebay plus to access the deal and still comes out cheaper, and you don't have to deal with afterpay.

        • +4

Fair enough, I edited the original post to show this better deal at the top

        • Only costs like $5 for the monthly too

    • And it’s Xiaomi Global Direct Store. Great find!

    • +1

The coupon was PLUSTEC for me. Same final price of $203.

      • +1

The PLUSTEC code seems to have replaced PLDTCH, when you see the latest T&Cs.

    • +1

Interestingly, for the PLDTCH / PLUSTEC code, the T&Cs simply state the discount range to be from $5 - $100. That seems kind of vague.

  • Do they work in bushfire areas?

    • +4

That’s probably a decent use case. You’d need it on full blast though but worth it in that circumstance.

  • +1

How noisy is it? Hard to sleep with it on?

    • +2

If you set to sleep mode through app timer, it's very quiet. I run in manual mode on a moderate fan speed during the day.

    • +11

There are different settings (Low, Medium, High, Sleep and Auto) so you can adjust it according to noise. I use mine on medium and actually enjoy the white noise while sleeping (also helps drown out noisy upstairs neighbours who seem to be breeding an ever-increasingly large herd of African Wildebeest).

      • +3

also helps drown out noisy upstairs neighbours who seem to be breeding

        =O !

an ever-increasingly large herd of African Wildebeest

        =O ?!

  • The OH has hayfever. Will this help at all?

    • +2

It could and should - any purifier able to filter out pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mould etc should help alleviate hay fever. I have 2 cats and the amount of fur/hair/dander it collects just sitting in one place is quite remarkable. Need to vacuum off the filter every 8 weeks or so to keep it running efficiently.

      • Cheers mate.
I'm getting 'This code can't be applied to your order.' at eBay checout. I've only used AFPYDY once, about 30 mins ago, for the shaver shop. Wonder what gives.

        • +1

          Edit, ignore my stupidity.
I was trying to apply AFPYDY to mini_wombat's PLUSTEC link.
Used the right code and worked like a charm. Shame I couldn't stack 2 to get an addl $16 off on top of the $65 x 2 (if it worked that way).

          • @lordra: Im confused, I'm still getting a message that the code is un avail? I un clicked the after pay discount and changed the payment method? Any advise?

            • @girafficlight: You can only use the AFPYDY code 5 times until midnight tonight (and check out with AfterPay).
If you're using mini_wombat's PLUSTEC link, you can pay with card and use PLUSTEC (NOT AFPYDY).

              • @lordra: Yea, this is what I tried still getting error message about code 😢

                • @girafficlight: Try another browser, incognito or a different network?

                  • +1

@lordra: OK Thank's for the help, I tried everything, and then closed everything and opened edited link, which showed discount PLUSTEC, copied into eBay clipboard and it worked!

                    Thanks!

I haven't bought one yet because I've always wondered HOW these air purifiers can possibly work when your door/windows (to the outside) are OPEN—-I mean, dust, pollen, etc. are continually blowing in throw the open windows, and at a rate that I doubt the air purifier can keep up with. In a closed room—yeah, they would work; but I always like to keep my windows open to get a fresh breeze/fresh air, and keep the temperature down, but I hate that I get exhaust particles, dust, etc. coming in from the open windows.
Do air purifiers still work in open(-window) rooms? Genuine question.

        • If you keep windows open daytime 2-3 times a week for minimum 6 hours a day, it's not for you

        • More useful at times when the window is closed for a long while, or you don’t get good air flow and it’s smoky. Maybe at night for allergies. I sold a different brand air purifier as it wasn’t really useful for me. Bought it during the bushfires, for my situation they’re only useful for events like that.

        • There's no chance an air purifier can keep up with filtering out pollen and pollutants if you keep your windows open 24/7. You'd need to close your windows (e.g. in the evening) and then run the air purifier on max power.

Also note that an air purifier can't do anything about pollen/dust/pollutants that have already settled on surfaces in your room. They can only filter stuff that's floating in the air.

        • +1

Thanks to everyone who replied. You confirmed for me that these machines make sense only for closed rooms. Strange how the advertisements don't mention this. It does have its uses for people with allergies who are in closed rooms a lot, and it will work during winter too, when I close my windows to keep the cold out. In summer, though, I just rely on cross-ventilation from open windows and fans (air conditioning is expensive), so this won't work well, unless I close up the room every now and then.

  • IS High Efficiency Filter same as hepa filter?

    • +1

Yep the 3H comes with a Hepa filter (the Xiaomi Grey one).

  • +1

Afterpay, eBay Plus everywhere. Nothing for everyone else?

    • +2

afterpay is free with no credit check, ebay plus has a free 30 day trial or is $4.99/month

      • -2

        Afterpay is never free.

        • Explain?

        • +1

It is if you pay your debt on time, and dont spend outside your means.

  • Can you turn all the lights off on the unit?

    • +1

Yes, you can set it to Bright, Dim or Off in the App.

  • Any deal for the filter?

  • Useful?

    • +1

I have had 2 running for 2 years now on night mode in corner of lounge room, before that was bedroom.
Pro is they move air around the room silently and make it less dusty.
Hasn't done much for my wifes hayfever, but we are at the end of the first default filter now. Not sure why people need so many filters?

      • Pro is they move air around the room silently and make it less dusty. Hasn't done much for my wifes hayfever

FYI, when on auto/silent mode, air purifiers are almost useless. They work by forcing air through a HEPA filter in order to capture particles, so you need to manually run them at full power or near-full power for them to do their job. This means the machine will be very loud, but that's how you know it's working correctly.

I usually run them at medium power (Level 2, on the Xiaomi 3H) at night, it's not so loud as to be disturbing, and it's a nice kind of white/background noise.

      • I've bought one to try for the OH's hayfever, so will run it on max and see how much it helps.

      • I am running mine in the bedroom from 2019, been through 4 filters already.

  • Seems to be expired now. No code mentioned here works for me.

    • +2

Well, PLUSTEC still works if you have eBay Plus. Says it is good until the 31st.

  • Tossing up between this or a dehumidifier 👀

    • +2

They're a very different use case scenario

    • Do you have moist air or dirty / dusty air haha ?

    • Both!
I don't think they would cancel eachother out, but I'm not sure

      • weird - normally humidity makes it harder for dust particles to linger in the air

    • +2

they are for completely different purposes, what do you need one for?

  • Thanks OP

  • Do these work for hair salons with fumes from hair products such as colouring, bleach etc?

Or am I better off just getting a carbon filter from a grow shop with a fan.

    • +2

The carbon part of the filters in these aren't sized for commercial/hair salon use. Some people add carbon pellets inside the cylindrical filter, but I'd recommend just getting a proper carbon filter from a grow shop

  • thanks OP,
When buying, it say 'ebay' lister has changed things, so im assuming price hikes, it didnt let me buy
i pressed buy again, it just worked lol

  • These are good but is there any way to make the automatic program more sensitive or aggressive?

    • automate it.

    • Auto modes are almost always 100% useless (due to the cheap sensors used in consumer machines), if you want an air purifier to do its job, you'll want to run it at max power, or near max power. The minimum I would use is the medium power setting, if you really have to due to noise reasons (e.g. you need to sleep, or you're watching TV and can't hear the dialogue otherwise).

      Otherwise just leave it off.

  • Just last year Kogan were overstocked and clearing these for not much over $100!

  • Great deal actually bought 2. Need to put separate orders to get the coupon discount.

Having just returned 2 Arovec 'Smart' air purifiers (love amazon return policy) I had been eyeing the Xiaomi units.

    • Having just returned 2 Arovec 'Smart' air purifiers

I'm curious, why did you return the Arovec machines? Interested, as I was looking at potentially getting one of those.

      • +2

The Arovecs I bought were really well built, quite compact and quiet in night,1 & 2 speed settings. If they were advertised as just a purifier without the smart features I would have kept them. The problem was the smart feature itself, the automatic fan speed based on air quality just did not work and I ran them constantly for almost a month until my return window.

I would move them to the kitchen to test while I was cooking or empty out the vacuum next to it and it wouldn't move off the lowest setting even with visible crap floating around it. Both units remained in the blue which indicates good air quality.

        • The problem was the smart feature itself, the automatic fan speed based on air quality just did not work

FYI, this is typical for 99% of consumer air purifiers, because of the cheap particulate sensors they use. It costs hundreds of dollars for a good sensor alone, so you won't find them in consumer machines like this.

A lot of people don't realise this and leave their machines on the auto setting, which means that 99% of the time the machine is not actually filtering anything (which explains why the machine is so "quiet"!).

You simply have to manually run the air purifier at medium or max speed in order for it to do its job. This is 100% true for the Xiaomi series as well (I own two of the Xiaomi 3H machines which I use regularly).

          • +1

@deadpoet: Yep didn't realise this until after I had purchased the Arovecs and did some digging, I don't expect the Xioami air sensor to perform perfectly but I have seen some videos of it actually working and adjusting the fan speed.

With the Arovecs it's the expectations that weren't met, they were advertising this feature and it doesn't work at all with whatever I threw at it. They actually look identical to another purifier that doesn't market itself with a sensor and those are at a lower price point.

    • what was bad about Arovec?

  • So was this at $129 when it was the lowest?

  • Are these effective in neutralising post cooking smells?

    • +2

Yes they are, but you should manually run the air purifier at max power setting, don't leave it on auto mode (as the sensor in almost all consumer machines is cheap and lousy, and doesn't tend to kick in until there's a LOT of particles in the air).

  • +1

Does anyone know if this will come with an AU plug attachment given it's Global Version?

    • +2

It’s figure 8, which I have run out of. Thanks for the reminder to grab some.

      Kogan sent me one separately.

  • +2

How does this compare to the Pro 4 that also is usually going around, apart from being a bit bigger and more expensive. Does the 4 have better features or anything?

    • +1

I think the Pro 4 uses different filters, which don't seem to be on sale as much? This is based on a vague recollection of a comment on a previous deal, so don't take it as gospel, more as something to go research maybe. :)

    • +2

The Pro 4 is bigger and has a higher CADR (clean air delivery rate), so it's suitable for bigger rooms/more coverage. It also uses bigger, more expensive HEPA filters.

      • +2

even for small rooms higher CADR means your air replacement rate is higher so it will get rid of aerosols that linger in the air quicker. if it's for allergies/dust, probably overkill, if it's for covid then the quicker the better. keep in mind the quoted CADR is on max setting which is probably too loud for comfort

  • Awaiting for 4 Pro on sales

  • Bought this last year and it's been great. Now it's in the bedroom and very quiet. Would recommend

  • My order got cancelled due to overstock. Shame!

    • +2

      overstock

They had too much stock, and still cancelled your order?

      • +1

        Doesn't make sense.

  • I just received mine. It looked well and truly sealed. Missing the power cord. Came with the adapter plug though. Very strange.
The actual box was empty, just the two white thermocol pieces. The back of the unit, which houses the air filter, did not have a anything there apart from the filter itself.

    What am I missing folks?
