Corsair 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SODIMM Memory Kit (CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9) for $98 + $7 postage to Brisbane.

I'm upgrading my MacBook Pro and was looking for more RAM and found this to be a fantastic price compared to the lowest on staticice ($185). Single sticks of 8GB start at around $60+postage so $105 for the kit posted was good enough for me.

I also wanted to get a SSD and remove/replace the OD with a HDD, but amazon won't post them to oz anymore :( I'll just have to set up a RAID for now.

since when do you need 16gb for a macbook pro? i hardly noticed the different from 4gb to 8gb on my i7 model

    • +2

That's because you're not doing anything memory intensive. I have friends who use upwards of 5GB with theorem proving environments for uni.

      • Shakes fist Bloody mods, ruin a good gag! :)

      • I run some really heavey load music, photo and video editing programs tho. I push it harder than any pc Ive owned (16gb) on these memory intence programs and still don't seem to use it

        • Editing large panoramic stitches in Photoshop CS5 my iMac will happily use 9-10GB of RAM if it's available.

Final Cut Pro X will also use 13GB+ while working with 1080P video files from my 5DMkII.

If I had the money available I'd bump my iMac to 32GB, FCPX would love me for it.

  • Awesome price but I too wouldn't know what to do with 16GB in a notebook. I rarely push my i7 desktop to its 8GB capacity. For those who need it this looks like a great deal though.

  • I run virtual machine (Parallels) on my Mac Pro and I easily run out of memory :(
This damn kernel takes more than 1Gb of memory for itself, Itune 200mb, Chrome ~500mb.. there goes your 8gb :)

This is a really good deal, thanks for posting!!

    • +2

      1.x + .2 + .5 ≠ 8…

      • +1

Erm.. which part of virtual machine did you not get? :)

        • There is no mention of how many ;) But I do agree that VMs chew up ram.

  • +7

    thanks just got 2 16gb kits. ( 32gb ) I need a bigger ep33n

  • Shame that a Lenovo T410 only supports up to 8GB and I've filled the RAM slots already with that capacity :(

  • Sweet, just bought some! Had actually been looking just this week at OWC 16Gb kit for my MacMini…saved around $100!

  • I've seen some higher-end ASUS gaming laptops that -include- 16 GB of RAM, but other than the OVERPRICED (IMO) MacBooks already mentioned (above), I don't know where I'd be able to use these. Any non-Apple suggestions? (specific makes & models, please)

Q: Does the low (per GB) cost of this RAM bring the extreme prices of any MacBooks down into line with, say ASUS laptops, ie, when combined (ie, buy an OVERPRICED MacBook & this (or similar) "cheap" RAM; do you get a system that approaches the price of, say, an ASUS gaming laptop, equipped with 16 GB of RAM?)

  • Would this be recommended to use with the NL40 HP server?

    • -2

would be overkill on a NL40

    • +1

16gb ram is not overkill on n40l server depending on usage patterns, I have 4gb and it's too little, 8gb would do me. The issue here is the ram is for a notebook, not desktop, and it is not ecc, so not as reliable in a server.

      • +1

The other issue is that HP Microserver N40L does not support more than 8Gb RAM.

        • thanks for the replies!
Is it worth getting ECC ram?

        • Depends what you're using the server for. If it's going to be used as an actual (small enterprise level) server; where uptime, data integrity & reliability are fairly critical; then yes ECC RAM might be a worthwhile investment.

OTOH, if like myself it's pretty much going to be a HTPC/NAS/Media Server; or even if it was just going to be be a workstation; then non-ECC should be just fine!

FWIW, the N40L is capable of running either ECC or non-ECC, so the choice is entirely up to you! :)

    • I have reason the believe the NL40 HP requires ECC RAM.

You have done just that with your comments.

That is a great deal Obake! Thank you for the post.

I was considering purchasing an Apple laptop to run multiple Virtual Machines under VMWare workstation. I gave up on the idea once I realised I can only install two sticks of RAM. At the time, 8Gb RAM was $400/stick (last year). I ended up buying a Lenovo W520 laptop and 4 sticks of 4Gb RAM. With this deal, I can now have 32Gb!

Maybe he doesn't understand that the internals are exactly the same components…
I +'d him after reading the first line and then regretted it after the second!

  • What other Virtual Machines should I run…hmm

    • What have you got?

  • would these work on a mid 2010 MBP?

  • I also wanted to get a SSD and remove/replace the OD with a HDD, but amazon won't post them to oz anymore :( I'll just have to set up a RAID for now. >>>>>>> http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68869 ??

  • Will these be okay for a 2011 iMac?

  • This kit is great, I bought mine from PC Case Gear for $159 a while ago, which is great if you want local warranty and quick delivery: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

They do work in the iMacs as well, so you can get 2 kits for 32GB of RAM in your new iMac. The PC Case Gear site has a list of supported Apple products, including the Mac Minis. For some reason they don't have the latest iMac i7 listed, but I believe that it was on the packaging.

  • Can you use this with a pc??

    • It's DDR3 SODIMM which you can only use it in a laptop.

    • Although it is for Macbook but I assume it can still be used for laptops that take ddr3?

      • Most laptops will use SO-DIMMs — these are smaller modules than desktop DIMMs. Just check the website for your model laptop, should have all the info you need.

    • Hey eljuwenbur. I am keen on get only one also I dont mind Share :)

  • Amazon says cannot ship to Australia?

  • Ram arrived this morning. Running fine in Early 2011 17" Macbook Pro. Excellent price, happy as.

  • Thanks very much to the OP for bringing this to our attention. I have a Thinkpad L420 (that I purchased via OzBargain last year) and the specs say that it supports a max of 8GB RAM. I purchased this 16GB kit from amazon and took a gamble … fortunately it paid off, it works perfectly. Now I can do some decent VMware training on it.
