God dammit. I waited for ages and bit the bullet a few weeks back.

    They rarely go on sale.

Really like that. Nice low end.

When I was first buying headphones, I remember that these were really cheap. Around $75 but that was 10 years ago. The HD600 could be found used for $200 as well. Those were the days, some great steals to be had. I guess inflation always has its way.

Do you mean the Hurr Durr 6 hundos?

        From Old Mate Senny.

      • I reckon he's responsible for at least ~25% of the inflation in the last two years on audio stuff haha

If you are planning on wearing these for hours I find they get pretty uncomfortable. I find beyerdynamic headphones to be a better option.

    • Ta. You saved me $134. I've got the ad700 and they suit my needs and have extra head support.

      • +1

This. ad700s - the absolute bomb.

    • These are the default pro use headphones. They're virtually indestructible and have a great flat response for monitoring. bd headphones are great but I wouldn't treat them the same way or use them on set.

Sound guy of 25 years here. Use Beyerdynamics daily for my work (DT770, DT990).

The Beyers last better, sound better, and are a lot more comfortable over time.

Don't get me wrong - the Sonys are good, and they're a standard. However, they got popular because they used to cost about half of what the Beyers did…

        • Are the Beyers 770 worth $45 more though?

          • @Wm: IMO, yes, absolutely.

Really depends on your use case though! For me, sound quality & comfort make that extra $45 well worth it.

EDIT: my first pair of DT770s lasted through 15 years of daily abuse. $45 extra over 15 years - no brainer for me!

Can confirm the DT990's are like oodies for your ears they're just like bruhhhh, so soft.

        • Ok great. Thanks. Yeah need to replace my audio technica mt40x because pads completey worn.

Sounds like Sony's and Beyers are both a decent upgrade. For production anyway.

    • i find the beyerdynamic headphones clamp too much (dt770 especially) dt990 isnt as bad but still not as comfy as my hd58x so i just use that for now

      • I found the same out of the box. I've gave mine a 'stretch' by putting them over my PC case for a few hours - made them a lot comfier.

It's always going to be about compromise though! If you don't like the clamping, you might find AKG or Sennheiser designs suit you better - each of those brands have a distinctive design over most of their range. E.g. Beyer = clampier, circumaural, AKG = looser, circumaural, Sennheiser = supra aural.

Most people will have their own preference!

  • Have had my MDR-V6 (twins for MDR7506) since 2006 atleast. Needed to change ear pads couple times. Impeccable sound.
However, I find the cable too heavy for commutes.

    • same here. The coiled non-detachable cable is a minor problem for me.
Sound Q beats all my Bluetooth headphones.
Other than that, this is a must-to-have headphones, even you would upgrade later.

      • Sound Q beats all my Bluetooth headphones.

That's not much of a boast considering any decent ~$100 dollar circumaural headphones will thrash all BT/ANC headphones that cost 3 or 4 times as much.

  • As others suggest, the 7506 (and its twin the v6) wears more comfortably over long periods with alternative earpads, like the fabric-based ones widely available on ebay or aliexpress. Although using the AudioTechnica m50 and the BD 770, still find the V6 the best for clean, transparent sound, less artificially boosted - and better than any bluetooth alternative. The long coiled cable is annoying when moving around but you'll get used to it given the great sound ;) And after a decade of near daily use, the V6 seems indestructible

Remember when $130 was a lot to pay for a pair of headphones?

    • I'm really glad that Beats convinced consumers that spending $400 on headphones was okay.

It's just a pity they convinced them to buy $400 Beats, when the professional options are SO MUCH better!

Yeah I don't get it, Beats sound is utter garbage, even a $100 set from any of the regular brands sound better. But we do have Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine to thank for blowing up the market. It's a great example of capitalism in action.

        • Style over substance.

    God these are ancient.

As others have said, they come from an era where headphones were nowhere near as comfortable as they are now and the fake leather padding becomes pretty disgusting and peels off after a couple of years, leaving black flakes everywhere.

Back in the day, when they could be had for well under $100 they were no-brainer and the headphone market wasn't nearly as competitive. These days, unless you're a professional genuinely looking for the flattest sound stage possible, there's way better headphones out there in this price range.

  • Would these work for plugging in to an electric guitar amp?

  • is there a wireless version for this? had a pair a while ago and they were the best fitting/sounding pair i've owned/would like to replace but needs/wants are a wireless pair

    • +1

That would defeat the purpose of the 7506s as A) they'd be a lot more expensive and B) sound much, much worse (especially relative to their cost). The 7506s have always been bang-for-your-buck, affordable, entry-level audiophile headphones. Bluetooth headphones are still nowhere near close to the sound quality of wired audiophile headphones.

  • tempted, but i dunno if it's different enough from the v6 which I have already. As I understand the 7506 is even brighter than the v6, which would be fairly painful to use for music. probably excellent for podcasts etc. though?

    • dude it's one of the most popular studio headphones of all time… no need to link some random singer using it lol it is used by so many professionals i see it very often in videos of podcast studios/radio stations
edit: also i think that is the sony mdr cd900st which is 2x the price
