Worth paying $150 more for the new M1 model?

    • +1

tahts what im thinking… isnt the m1 so much better?

      • +4

worth, but you barely need that.

        • +6

Given that people generally tend to keep iPads for quite a bit longer than phones, probably worth paying the extra and not regretting it 2 or 3 years down the track.

          • @havequick: Mostly agree and I'll do the same. M1 is 10 times stronger than my phone and even stronger than my ultrabook. The only question is always the support of M1 on iPad. Temp control, bat consumption, and supported software. A few comps are transferring to the apps over the PC versions but most don't.
Ipad user is slightly different to the iPhone users chasing the best techs, it's more about personal preference over a general answer: Genshin impact? Go ahead. web/Netflix/youtube browser? Ipad can do the work.

            • @Toxinor: Yeah, agree for browsing the M1 is likely overkill, even for the next few years. Typing this on an M1 Macbook Air and the thing flies, the only time it slows down is with 11 million chrome tabs open and that's far more likely a RAM limitation. Does require a restart to pick back up, however - closing chrome doesn't seem to rectify it.

I bought my 6 year old a 2018 iPad Pro for Christmas, that I got a really good deal on ($700 with 1st gen apple keyboard cover) and whilst still fast it does 'feel' like it 'chugs' when switching between apps occassionally but that's also pushing significantly more pixels and at 120Hz.

              • @havequick: Whereas for me the 2018 iPad Pro still feels like it's flying through everything I put mine through. So yeah it's all about your needs, what do you want to do with it. I use my M1 Air for real work and I mainly use my iPad for the pencil and handwriting. And some gaming.

Isn't the m1 so much better?

In an ideal world, but its been iPadOS holding the iPad back for years now not the SoC.

        • I think M1 is more efficient isn't it? I.e. more battery life for same performance?

          • @Genepi: Not sure about that, both the A14 and M1 SoCs are built on the same 5nm process and the battery life is the exact same 10hrs as before.

But like other comments said, I would agree that for $150 it'll probably hold that difference in resale value. Plus there are some other benefits like a better GPU on M1 that you could actually take advantage of, and a Centre Stage compatible selfie camera.

Might depend on what you’re using it for. But if it’s anything like the battery life and speed difference between the older intel MacBook Air and the newer M1 versions. Then yes, they are night and day.

And will probably hold that $150 difference when it comes time to upgrade, if that’s in your plans.

It's nothing like that. The M1 is an evolution of the Bionic chips from Apple. Intel were so bad for so long that was a massive revolution in power, performance and battery life for Macs but it's way less so for the iPad.

In saying that, the M1 are more powerful than previous iPad, but it's not a revolution.

    • Definitely worth the $150. iPad's are generally kept a lot longer than phones… and you're getting much more in terms of device and battery life with the extra outlay.
There would have to be a much bigger price difference here to warrant this being a bargain imo.

    • Yes, but not everyone can maximise the M1 on iPad; unless you use it for video editing etc.

      • Efficiency of the chip is as, if not more important than maxing it out for battery life

Imho yes. The main advantage is peace of mind if you intend to keep it for a long time

2020 vs 2022, the 5th gen will get more years of support from Apple.

8gb RAM vs 4GB. You don't have to worry about RAM creep for the life of the device. It's probably still be good in 10 years.

I think saying 899 RRP is misleading when the Air5 is out (although it is 929 now.)

If one was in the market for an Air I think I'd rather try to combine 15% off GC with the RRP on the Air5 for ~790 than pay ~711 for this.

    • May I know which GC you are referring to?

      • +1

They're referring to once-a-year sales at Coles where Ultimate gift cards or TCN gift cards are sold at 15% off, and then you can use some of those gift cards at JB Hi-Fi. You can search OzBargain for the deal posts for 2020 and 2021.

The problem is that the gift cards are extremely hard to find during those sales…

        • +1

Or Apple GC but it remains to be seen if we'll get 15% off those again.

  • Suncorp does 5% off apple GC now. I did that and bought off education store. So paid about $810 for 5th gen Air 64g

    • Any chance to access education score, if you are not in the industry?

      • The Apple Edu store can be accessed by anyone apparently. They don't even check if you do an online order and get it delivered - they may check if you do a pickup. I've done it once with a phone for cashback and Apple sent the phone without any further checks. Didn't even use an edu address. YMMV

    • I thought suncorp stopped selling discounted gift cards in March 22?

      • +1

They've reneged on that now - still running fine.

  • Just picked up my iPad air at Hornsby Apple. No questions asked. Order online and pickup or deliver to your house.

Yes, suncorp are still doing their gift cards.

    • +1

How did you order the 4th gen from Apple online?

  • You can price-match at OW. They will consider delivery factor upon price-match, mine turns out $675. Using 2016 iPad Pro 9.7 till now, so its a good upgrade for me.

  • Any else jump on this deal, I ordered mine on April 4th and aside from the confirmation email i haven't heard a thing from them, no shipping, no update?

Any else having more luck than me?

    • We are in the same boat, ordered the 4th, not heard anything except the confirmation email.

    • Just received an email for cancellation

      • Same, no communication at all, then an email this morning to say I've been refunded. Terrible service.
