Xiaomi Mix 4 5G (6.67" 120Hz AMOLED, 12GB/512GB, Snapdragon 888+, Widevine L1) $1099 Delivered @ Panmi

1010
MIX4YOU

On sale is this really high end flagship phone packed with features from Xiaomi and local stock. The big bonus with this one is that it comes with a whopping 12GB of RAM, 512GB storage and uses the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ CPU so it'll handle any game thrown at it. The cameras also produce good photos and videos with excellent image stabilisation.

Featuring MIUI 12.5 (Android 11, OTA to Android 12), 6.67" 2400x1080 AMOLED 120Hz 800nits Dolby Vision HDR10+ Display with Gorilla Glass Victus, 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, 512GB UFS 3.1 storage, Widevine L1 DRM for Netflix HD, 4500mAh battery with 120W fast charging & PD3.0/QC4, 50W wireless charging, 108MP+8MP+13MP Rear Camera with OIS, up to 8K video, 20MP Front Under Display Camera, 5G/4G with dual SIM, 2x Harman Kardon Speakers, IR Blaster, Fingerprint reader, WiFi 6E/GPS/BT 5.2 and IP53 water/dust resistance.

This is the Chinese version as Xiaomi never released this officially. Google Play can be sideloaded and 3rd party ROMs like the Xiaomi.eu ROM (Xiaomi's translation team) that translates MIUI CN into MIUI EN with full Google Services are available.

As usual I recommend checking out Techtablets' indepth review to see it in action. A downside in the review was that the phone may give an overheat warning during intense use. As of the Android 12 update this has been resolved and temperatures improved.

Is this really a flagship on same level as pixel/iphone/samsung flagship?

Even if specs are good, I suspect you don't get same level of software development and customer support as with top tier brands?

    • +6

Xiaomi will give you a few years of updates. MIUI based on Android 12 was released last year in November. As for custom ROMs there's already LineageOS (Android 12), Paranoid Android and Xiaomi EU available to name a few.

Given this is coming from Xiaomi Australia you are backed with an Australian warranty.

      • I am on Poco version of MIUI, 12.5 and security patched to Jan 2022. I think this is better than some of the big boys that are more rigorous with pre release testing, but as a result delays to pushing out security patches. It's a 2 edged sword…

        • +4

There's only two manufacturers bigger than xiaomi.. it's samsung and apple and they are not far ahead.

          • +3

@peekabooo: Yes they are far ahead. Every Samsung flagship since 2019 is on at least March security patch, and every S or FE Galaxy from this year onwards will have 4 years Android + 5 years security updates.

            • +3

@Techie4066: I'm talking in terms of market share. If you are talking about updates Mi 8 (phone release in 2018) is getting the latest update. Mi series is their flagship.

            • +3

              @Techie4066: a53 / a73 , gets 4yr OS / 5yr security too

              not sure about a33

            • +1

@Techie4066: The very reason I'm going to Samsung this time. I've been using Xiaomi/Redmi phones for maybe almost 10 years now. Good hardware for the price, but I've only ever seen maybe 2 Android upgrades per phone. I had to resort to flashing so that they gave me about maybe 4 or 5 years of proper use.

I'm getting tired of flashing, so with what Samsung is promising, I'll give them a go again.

              • @BadGiraffe: Flashing can be tiring but always a good workout

How does it help the phone tho?

                • @AussieMark: Extends its life, in terms of Android upgrades. I used my Redmi Note 3 for almost 4 or 5 years, giving it 2 Android upgrades after the last official upgrade.

      • +5

Very clearly says on the product page:

“This is the Chinese version. Panmi Australia will provide 12 months local warranty for any hardware related faults and 30 days DOA replacement.”

    • +2

I think pixel 6pro is better.
Latest processor and long term supports

    • I've had awful experience with a redmi note 5 software.
The high tier products might get more care from xiaomi though, told myself i'd never touch chinese phones again lol

  • is this the phone with full charge in 10 mins ?

    • +7

      15min, peak 120W

      • pretty crazy

    • +3

      no u

    • +1

Just because it is a Chinese brand, doesn't mean it is overpriced. What is your argument against its price?

    • Any phone over $1k is overpriced to me. Unless it's made of gold or can do my laundry and dishes.

  • +2

    120W Wired & 50W Wireless Fast Charging

Awesome feature. I hope it starts to appear in some other phones soon!

    • +6

Having just broken my phone and got a burner Motorola with 30W charging I'm already impressed with the speed. 120W would be unimaginable.

      • Can't believe they managed to pump 50W through wireless charging.

  • +9

The biggest draw card for this are

    1. 888+ at this price
    2. full notch-less display at 120Hz
    3. 120W peak charging
    • -1

The faster the charging, the shorter the battery will last though, so a double edged sword

      • +3

I hear this repeated so often but how certain are you that this is really the case? There are a lot more software and hardware improvements in recent years that allow for rapid charging without compromising battery health

        • +4

Yeah It definitely seems like one of those things people say as a fact, but don't actually know if it's true or not

        • +4

It's important to note that you can't take manufactures or YouTubers words on these topics

A lot of peer reviewed research shows a negative relationship between the two, but the extent of which changes depending on a whole lot of different factors including how the battery is charged over a full cycle, etc.

In short, it's completely correct to say that your battery won't last as long, what isn't clear is by how much

          • @cille745: Fair enough. It is indeed a murky field.

My thinking was prompted by having seen several Android brands over the last few years feature huge leaps in charging speed (Eg: Huawei, Oppo, Oneplus) through more powerful higher wattage chargers while not personally seeing headlines or mass reports of significant battery degradation en masse. Apple is historically conservative with new tech but interestingly Samsung is not at the forefront with charging speeds either.

        • The higher the power the more heat (in watts) is lost into the phone and battery during charging. You'd have to check the temperature it hits, but even my pixel 4 at 18w gets lightly warm to the touch. At 120w, even with slightly more efficient tech…I'd be very surprised if it didn't get noticeably warm.

      • +1

It's not the faster charging. It's the increased temperature that high wattage can generate. If well managed (software based charging control, hardware cooling, t's not a problem). Will last 2 years+ by that time you want a new upgrade anyway.

        • As on OzBargainer i'd certainly hope not! I tend to keep my phone until its unusable.

    • the biggest draw back s are

      1. Chinese ROM (no Google out of box)
      2. Potentially some secure apps won't run (bank apps)
      3. Good luck getting warranty (altho Panmi will help, and I have not had a phone die on me for a decade)
  • +8

In case you don’t know, it’s got an under screen front camera. Some scifi shit. Wish iPhone had it. I can’t deal with Android system but this phone is sexy as hell

  • +6

I would have considered it if they kept the Micro SD and the headphone jack like a true flagship as opposed to just copying iPhone and Samsung.

    • +2

And this is why I include reviews that cover the cameras in my posts ;)

    • +1

with the price difference you could buy a point and shoot camera …

    • -6

I believe only oppo and Vivo have good cameras among Chinese phones

      • +11

Huawei had the best cameras amongst all phones, still better than anything Samsung Or Apple had to offer.

  • +5

"This is the Chinese version. Panmi Australia will provide 12 months local warranty for any hardware related faults and 30 days DOA replacement. Due to limited stock, if we are unable to replace, we will offer a full refund."

With the price of this phone I would expect at least 2 year warranty.

    • +2

Except that iPhones with double the price offers only 1 year warranty as well

        • +2

What company replaced things on the spot? Are you saying if my phone stop working within 1 year I can walk into Apple store and get a replacement on the spot?

          • +1

@HandsomeMonkey: Yes. I've had an iPhone replaced on the spot.

          • @HandsomeMonkey: Apple. I had an iPad Mini I bought in the US replaced on the spot, no trouble!!
But the downvote brigade don't want to hear what doesn't suit their confirmation bias.

      • +2

I’d read the ACCC forced Apple to provide 2 years on iPhones?

They did try it on with 1 originally

    • Does Samsung and Apple provide more than 12 months warranty for their $2000 phones?

      • -2

No one, at least here, buys the top Samsung for $2k. Aside from them Google has always had 2 years.

      • They have to give 2 years warranty under Australian Consumer Law, provided it is Australian stock and you get it repaired in Australia.

  • +3

At first I thought this was an air purifier! 🤣

  • +1

    Chinese version..

    • Yeah the packaging is in Chinese. GPlay likely needs to be installed.

      • Yeah I don't think they made an international ROM for this phone so only Chinese version exists unfortunately. Would be all over it otherwise

        • +1

same…wish they continue to bring global version to Poco

  • Oh wow, tempting. Maybe when it dips to about $800 I'll bite

It looks great though, and no silly hole in the display

  • Comes with International version MIUI or Chinese version?

  • Chinese version means no Google Assistant right?

    • No Google Play Services, so no Assistant, Maps, etc.

  • +1

Wow, I am considering replacing my iPhone 12 Pro for this.

  • +2

    Another great post. Thanks clear.

  • +2

    I'm sticking with my 3210

  • +3

    VoLTE with Telstra?

  • What's real world camera performance? Does it line up with S22 or 12 Pro?

  • +12

I've using Mix 4 as my main driver since December last year (side-graded from a Fold 2 as I finally got tired of the narrow cover screen) with Xiaomi.eu ROM.

It's a great phone provided that:

    • you're comfortable installing a custom ROM (which has a 7-day wait to unlock the bootloader)
    • no OTA updates, at the moment you'll need to use Fastboot to flash ROMs, unless you're sticking with the official Chinese ROM

    Some small gotchas:

    • after migrating the apps, etc from my Fold 2, the notifications were very buggy and most notifications weren't being received, a wipe and reflash resolved it
    • I bought it mainly for the under-display camera, but a lot of apps and games don't take advantage of it therefore you still get a black bar at the top, unless you root your phone
    • with the current MIUI ROM (I'm on the latest 13.0.4 stable), the animation sometimes get cut out, e.g. when opening an app, sometimes the app will just appear without the transition. Not a big deal, but this is something I've never experienced on a Samsung device before.
    • The official Youtube app runs on 60Hz despite setting the phone to 120Hz, but there's a trick via SetEdit to force it to run on 120Hz (in the past I've been using Youtube Vanced which runs on 120Hz)
    • By default, apps don't "auto-start", and are "MIUI battery optimised". For apps that need real time notifications, you'll need to turn both off.

Overall I'm still pretty happy with the phone:

    • it's IMO a good looking phone
    • the screen is great, especially when apps and games do take advantage of the full screen
    • really good battery life
    • the cameras are fantastic (excluding the selfie one which I don't use) for a smartphone - speaking as a photography enthusiast
    • cheaper than many competitions (at the expense of not having good warranty)

Re warranty: AFAIK Xiaomi doesn't have a presence in Australia. In this particular case, Mix 4 only has a Chinese version (therefore, there is currently no official global ROM for Mix 4), but even for Xiaomi phones that do have global versions the warranty will always be provided by the reseller, in this case Panmi. Just something to be aware of.

    • Hey, what case or screen protector do you use with this phone?

      • +1

        I don't use any.

    • +1

Wow, such a long list of issues, that definitely doesn’t make a good phone for a normal user.

      • +1

Yeah, I don't recommend it to average users.

I bought my parents Poco phones (global ROM) they are much better for folks who don't care too much about cutting edge performance or camera.

    • +1

Couldn't edit my list anymore, one more pro to add to the list:

      • The under-display camera, despite it's poor image quality, is hidden extremely well, it's a generation or two ahead of Samsung's implementation in their Fold 3.
      • +3

I dunno if having poor image quality puts it ahead. That's a pretty huge trade off.

        • From what I've seen, all current under-display cameras have poor quality, including the Fold 3 one.

          • +1

@fredwu: ah I see what you mean then.

Personally I'd way rather just have a black circle at the top of the screen than sacrifice camera quality. A circle/notch has never once felt like its ugly or gets in the way.

    • Have you tried LineageOS on the Mix 4? I really wanted a new no-punch hole/notch phone to replace my Poco F2 Pro, but they're so hard to find right now.

    • +1
  • Incredible phone. If I didn't buy my s21 ultra for 1k a year ago this would be amazing to have. Hands down best screen for content consumption on the go

  • -4

gonna stay away as soon as i see at the bottom of their page:
    NOTE:
    Chinese version
    no technical support
    no warranty

    EDIT:
Note: This is the Chinese version. Panmi Australia will provide 12 months local warranty for any hardware related faults and 30 days DOA replacement. Due to limited stock, if we are unable to replace, we will offer a full refund.

even the seller provides their own warranty, dont really trust these seller's warranty especially when it comes to a phone that costs over $1k…..

    • +5

Panmi will provide support and warranty for this phone as it says on the listing like you noticed. Your note about no support or warranty is false ;) Besides they're not your average seller either because they're Xiaomi's Distributor in Australia.

  • +1

Xiaomi warranty its just nothing in Australia. Bought vacuum cleaner from them and no any options to replace or repair faulty product

  • How do you install google app on this phone?

  • Can't see what 4G and 5G bands are utilised??

  • +2

Always a soft spot for the Mix series, the Mix 2S was a superb bit of kit. Really premium feel and look, and had the selfie camera in the chin of the phone, so notchless screen. Mine died about 18 months in, replaced with a Mi 9T Pro (with the pop-up selfie camera).

The Mix 3 was the funky mechanical slider for the selfie, so again no notch.

The Mix 4 looks gorgeous, too late for me with a Pixel 6 Pro.

The other issue - normal VoLTE / VoWiFi warning with Telstra - with most recent Xiaomis (apart from X3?) the carrier settings are missing, and can't be made to work.

    • +1

I've been using a Mi Mix 3 5G for the last couple of years. It's a very solid phone with amazing specs for the price (paid about $400 on release), but for some reason Xiaomi abandoned it almost straight away. It came with the xiaomi.eu ROM which never saw a significant update, meaning it never actually unlocked the 5G radio. I still regularly buy Xiaomi phones for family members who need a cheap reliable phone, but I'd be nervous spending flagship prices on Xiaomi. They seem to be tilting towards the higher end market now, but I feel like they will need to do a lot more in support than they currently do to compete with the big two.

  • Oh I miss the max series and size. Regardless what they say, size does matter :/

  • Would banking apps and Service NSW app work fine on this?

    • some migt not. good point

  • +2

    Bought mine aud $990.79 from

    https://tradingshenzhen.com/en/mi-mix-4/xiaomi-mix-4-8gb128g…

with bootloader unlocked and Xiaomi.eu rom installed

    • +2

they installed the rom for you?

      • yup

  • Becareful it's only USB 2.0 speed on the USB-C port, very skow.

    • Good catch.. wonder why they only have usb2.0 on it. Did they not think we sometimes transfer large files from PC to phone or phone to PC?? Hmm

  • -1

Seriously 4500mAh in a 1000+ phone, ahhh no. That is barely keeping this beast for a mere day if not less. If 699 maybe but not 1000

    • Plenty of more expensive Samsung phones have less capacity 🤣

      • Not top tier is which i am talking about. 4500mAh is ridic, for a top tier in any brand with those specs.

        • Sure they do. Galaxy Flip 3 is only 3300 mAh. S22 is 3700.

  • +1

Used a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 for 4+ years. Definitely rate their flagship quality. The ceramic back still doesn't have a scratch on it, and had no issues with the os cause I just skinned it with nova launcher so it felt like a pixel. I only had to upgrade as the phone was obviously aging and the battery life wasn't what it used to be. Really considered this phone but I'm a tech whore and the z flip 3 turned my head + I only don't like massive phones weighing down my pockets. If they release a small phone again in the future would buy them again.

    • +1 … Flip3 is very underrated .. nice big 6.7" screen and one of the most compact phones around
      .
Definately the ultimate folding form factor!

Tried pixel 6 Pro after using Flip3 for 6 months .. felt ridiculous to carry around such a large brick .. bit like those portable phones from the 80s.

    • hey mate flip turned your head in a good way?

Curious on your thoughts as I am waiting on a S22 Ultra and debating on Fold 3 or Flip or Xiaomi Mix 4
