TomTom GPS 3 Years Free Maps and 2 Years Free Hd Traffic

140

Tomtom is offering 3 years free maps and 2 years HD (normally only 1year) live traffic on the "live" series gps. big saving considering maps cost $99 for 1 year of maps and HD traffic cost $69

If you want to see how HD live traffic works…

http://www.tomtom.com/livetraffic/?Lid=8

ps HD live traffic works great in sydney, makes driving in peak hour a breeze. lol and will only get better with the higher uptake to the "live" gps'.

Not sure if the battery will last 3 years though (by that I mean reasonable level of battery power, not one that holds for only 30 minutes).

    • +1

Wow, you get 30 minutes? Mine turns off when I stop the car.

      • That happened on ours after a recent update. It's easy enough to stop it turning itself off though if you don't want it to.

    • i bought a GO series 1.5 years ago. The battery lasted just a year then deteriorated rapidly to it's present state of only holding charge for 5-10 minutes regardless of length of charge.

    • I've had a tomtom Go 710 since 2006 and the battery still lasts around 4 hours.
I'd say that 95% of the time it's run on battery alone (and recharged via pc/usb) as opposed to being constantly connected to the in-car charger, which only gets used for long interstate road trips twice a year.

Get a new battery on ebay. I got one for $14 (of course it may not last). Post above is right - it's probably having it permanently plugged in that kills it. Need to give a full discharge/charge cycle occasionally.

Good offer but please be aware TomTom uses and abuses your gps data
resells it to other groups, major privacy breach for some a no worry for others
its under a long tos agreement

      Goodbye Tomtom

      • who cares. register your tomtom with fake name if your really worried. in anycase would make great sence for local goverments to find out where bottlenecks are and what effect say a bus lane does to traffic.

        • fake name = there go your warranty when you need it…

        • You don't need to register a device to claim warranty, and I'm sure legally that while it may break the EULA for the services, the name you supply for the online site probably has no baring on whether you are entitled to repairs for physical failures.

    • thanks for the heads up

I thought it's for everyone regardless of purchase date. but I was wrong. that's for anyone who buys Tomtom between 28th Apr to 30th Sep 2012.

  • Good stuff

I wouldn't waste my money. Tomtom maps are hopelessly inaccurate these days. They are a complete waste of money, especially given their premium price and the fact their competitors all do lifetime free now. I also can't make any sense out of this offer, it's written in double-dutch.

What would you recommend then? I have a Tom Tom, while it's not 100% perfect it is light years ahead of the joke known as Navman.

      • Use a phone with GPS…most come with unlimited free map updates!

        • agreed, iphone or anything else with Googlemaps is 100% better. Ive had the top of the range Tom Toms for years, poor quality, battery fails and unit failures at least 3 times per unit, Ill never buy another, my iphone does the job and its just as accurate if not better plus its free

        • i got galaxy nexus and u use it in conjunction with a dedicated gps. use google maps for here and there navigation. but if your a serios driver to many unknown address then a dedicated gps is the way to go….

"iphone or anything else with Googlemaps is 100% better."

Google maps on the iPhone doesn't even have spoken turn by turn navigation. It isn't even close to comparable to a dedicated unit. Android is another matter, but there is still issues if you are prone to be in areas without data connections. For the iPhone, if you need the functionality that a dedicated unit provides then you are better off looking at the TomTom app, metroview or similar apps.

        • I beg to differ. Google maps have countless errors and is often out of date. I've sent in countless corrections to google over the years, something that TomTom never seem to have an issue with.

        Garmin Nuvi's are awesome.

(and buy them at the right time you get lifetime map updates)

Navman's suck because they are the only ones to not use Whereis for map data (both Garmin and TomTom use Whereis, and Navman uses Navteq).

Only issue with TomTom's is that map updates will always cost you money. You might get 1 or 2 years free (if you're lucky), but then its going to cost you. Buy Garmin during their promo's and you get lifetime free updates. I've had my Nuvi for a few years now, and still going strong. And lifetime is REAL lifetime btw. As long as unit is working, you get updates.

Choice did a market review in November last year.
Top 5 units were TomTom and Garmin with only 2 points in it from 1st to 5th (so very close scores).

Garmin scored better on "verbal instructions", and "ease of use", while TomTom scored a little higher on "points of interest" and "city driving test score". But virtually identical scoring in all fields. The TomTom's are ready to navigate faster than the Garmin's however (again, it's a few seconds… but still).

The highest Navman scored equal 10'th… with very poor rural coverage and screen quality.

not that Choice is the be all and end all, did it take into account Live traffic? This TT HD traffic is invaluable in peak hour. If you ever travel the M4 u would know, great if no traffic , a nightmare otherwise.

TT's traffic blows the competion out of water from what i read.

        • Garmin all series are not good..I ended up buying Garmin.Check the reviews before you buy.

        • "Only issue with TomTom's is that map updates will always cost you money. You might get 1 or 2 years free (if you're lucky), but then its going to cost you."

You realise this is a post for 3 years of free updates right?

Garmins "lifetime" is really just the lifetime of the device. It isn't indefinite so either way at some point you will want to look at a new device.

        • I have a TomTom and got a Garmin for the lifetime maps offer, but found it awful so sold it. Dim screen and bad GUI. So it's very subjective which is best.

      • What would you recommend then? I have a Tom Tom, while it's not 100% perfect it is light years ahead of the joke known as Navman

Absolutely! Went and got our TomTom after the stupid Navman got me hopelessly lost in a city that I'd never driven in.

Sadly, ours isn't included in the eligible models for this offer.

    • Cant make sense of it? Really? 3yrs free map updates and 2 years of live traffic updates, if you buy one, which is just what the title says. Simple enough?

  • Would help though if the OP had edited the orignal post to say that you need to purchase one by Sep 30. Thanks for mentioning later though.

  • The claims for purchases of a GPS ends on the 14th of October not the 16th of June. The 16th of June is the cut off date for people who got a GPS from Rheem by buying some their stuff.
