What Ruins OzBargain for You?

So I have a love/hate relationship with ozbargain.com.au. I really enjoy the principle of sharing great deals, saving sums money and getting everyone's shared experiences and reviews.

At the same time the humour is pretty solid. There are some witty commentators among you.

That said. Some things turn me right off! What grinds your gears the most?

I'd like to think the ozbargain.com.au gods are reading this and might take our views into consideration.

Update: Thanks to the mods for providing some advice to some concerns/comments.

I know this may have set off some negative comments but I hope the ozbargain.com.au gods take it as constructive. It was good of them to allow this forum run at the risk of complaints.

I still ❤️ you ozbargain.com.au

Nothing. I’m capable of not clicking or closing pages of troll-baiting people that annoy me and thus able to move on. Try it.

You can’t expect the world to conform to your preferences and likes/dislikes.

      • +9

Pretty sure I didn't suggest the world should.

I'd like to think the ozbargain.com.au gods are reading this and might take our views into consideration.

Hmm. If you say so. Sounds to me like you want things changed to what you want there.

Blood pressure A-ok, thanks for the concern though. Much appreciated. ☺️

Maybe we should have included people who get a little touchy

        Like you?

This is an opt-in forum. No-one is forcing you to comment, view or contribute to it.

      • +1

Where does this post fit into your poll?

      • +1

You're definitely the touchy one here. So have you gone to the chemist for your medication?

    • +1

Why say "try it"? Why couldn't you just give your opinion instead of trying to tell someone else what to do? OP isn't looking for your advice and you just started a conversation off in a way nobody would face to face… because it'd be considered rude.

  • +69

Apparently you missed “overly negative people who complain about people’s posts wasting their time but feel compelled to waste more time responding to the post”.

That is the one I would put in.

  • +17

Many OzBargainers believe that people aren't allowed or capable of forming their own opinion. Last month 25 people agreed with me that "you can have your own opinion" and 60 people disagreed.

So perhaps what annoys me is stupid people in the OzBargain community?

  • +2

    Bikies

  • +22

    What ruins Ozbargin for you?

    By not calling it OzBargain.

  • +6

It's OzBargain. Can you provide evidence of these things annoying you? What's your betting tips for tomorrow?

  • +72

It’s the general hostility in a lot of the responses to a bargain. First time posters seem worried they are going to post incorrectly somehow and beg for forgiveness ahead of time. I wish we could all just get along

    • +19

I wonder how many people don't post due to this? We could be missing out on some terrific deal on a product we didn't know we even needed!

    • +2

I actually hate the "first post, please be gentle" disclaimer itself…haha

Similar to people saying, "Can I ask you a question?"

      Just ask the question, dammit.

      • +2

can't blame them. everything is a bad deal in the eyes of jv

        • +2

In the eyes of jv has there ever been a bargain posted?
You’ll all miss him when he’s gone.

          • @cashless: When he's gone? Do you know something we don't? Has someone put out a contract on him? They'd better have got a good price for it or it would totally go against the site's ethos

          • +1

            @cashless: No we won't

    • +3

Yes and not just posting, commenting too - you give what you think is a constructive piece of commentary then people react like you kicked their dog or something and attack and neg you and just be generally hostile if they have even a slightly different point of view - often is not even that different (i.e. you may not disagree with them but add another consideration) and still get a negative attack.

It's getting to the point I'm considering de-registering and not participating.

  • +16

The fact that neg voting a deal basically puts a target on your mandatory comment needed to neg vote the deal regardless if your neg vote is perfectly valid.

    • +12

I don’t like that you can have a totally valid point for placing your neg on a deal and then the community who don’t agree can just have it removed by downvoting your comment.

This door should swing both ways. If someone upvotes it, as a community, we should be able to downvote that comment to remove the positive votes in the same was as they remove the negs.

  • +18

    For me:

    1) General entitlement - many people comment as if everyone else around here owes them without having contributed jack shit to the community. Nothing grinds my gears more than entitled assholes who have posted zero deals complaining about stuff other people have posted.

I've always been of the belief that the community works best when there's some incentive to participate. For example, users have to post X deals with X upvotes every 6 months to be able to comment, access forums…etc., or there should be some time delay on people who are not contributing any deals (e.g. if you've not posted any deals with at least X upvotes in the last 6 months, any posted deals come with a 1 hour time delay or something to that effect).

    2) Forums turning into a shit show of people complaining about various things that have nothing to do with bargain hunting. I've never understood why the whole "help, I've received a parking fine", or "my neighbour is an (profanity)" belong on a bargain hunting forum. FWIW, it doesn't harm anyone, but I can't help but feel that a lot of people are making accounts just to complain or seek validation and delete their accounts when they're not getting what they want, or they will never come back and contribute to the community again.

    3) Seeing politics everywhere - again, not something that is hugely annoying, but just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I already dislike how I see politics everywhere and even on a bargain hunting forum, where I just want to banter about the latest deals, what cool tech there is and whatever, that I always have crazies ranting and raving about whatever the latest conspiracies are (e.g. how we're all going to die because of vaccine mandates seem to be the latest one).

There's a blanket ban on discussing religious topics, which I feel is to prevent similar ranting from getting out of hand.

    • +6

Yeah I know an old chap who says never discuss politics or religion. Too many people get upset.

    • +4

      1) General entitlement

The thing I hate seeing in forums is "Any deals going for X". People expecting other members to go looking for them.

For example, users have to post X deals with X upvotes every 6 months to be able to comment, access forums…etc

I do see the benefit in this, it would mean that some particular users would actually have to contribute positively for once and not just stir the pot every other day.

However it would also lead to an abundance of poor quality deals just so they can continue being active in the community.

      • +3

The thing I hate seeing in forums is "Any deals going for X". People expecting other members to go looking for them.

They need to remove the "find me a bargain" section then? Or clarify that you should only post in there if you've already made a valid attempt to search yourself first?

  • Gm fam,

I'm here to comment on everything.

    Don't you just 😡 that?

  • +35

the constant smart arse comments from the same few on almost every single post.

sometimes it just feels like the lite version of whingepool.

there is also a certain hostility here, especially towards new members. i've seen multiple threads where people could have simply ignored the thread altogether (i know i ignore a few threads which i don't like), but they feel the need to click on the thread and comment "google it" or something dumb like that, as if that hasn't already been done. sometimes, google does not have the answer, which is when people end up here or on other forums.

    • +1

the need to click on the thread and comment "google it" or something dumb like that, as if that hasn't already been done

There has been some post like "is xx store open on yyy day?", which yes, can be googled but they clearly didn't.

I guess some like to be spoon-fed, some like to spoon feed and some wish for growth.

    • +1

sometimes, google does not have the answer

Most of the time, it does though.

Some people are just lazy, like there's some secret to finding a good price on XYZ.

      • +4

You could literally google every single forum topic but that's not the point of the forums. There's always new things to discuss and OzBargainer's always have a unique perspective.

        • Would you like you discuss about "2+2=4", or what time does Woolworth open on Saturday?

          • +3

@Ughhh: Literally nobody has posted that. Feel free to start your own topic.

            • +1

@Savas: They could if they wanted to though, right?

            • +1

@Savas: Maybe not for the former, but I would still like to discuss it with you. Then next post maybe "where abouts is new York on the map?", what's your perspective?

  • +20

The self righteous holier than thou types.

    The Oz bargain super braggers.

People who have been renting for 20+ years complaining about not being able to afford a house, even though they were working adults at a time when houses were affordable.

People who blame others for their own mistakes (often related to the above)

Complaints about petty things like a temporary sign being placed on some grass they never use.

    • +3

Renters are the worst. All renters in the country should be drafted into the front line of a war already.

      • +19

Nah, all landlords are arseholes, especially the fat, rich, 20+ house owning ones that want to withhold rental bonds because there was 3 specks of dirt on top of a door frame and then want to get their brother’s cleaning company in to clean it for more than the bond is worth.

        • nah all those who aint renters or landlords who post about renters and landlords are the worst

done we have the complete set!

  • +11

Unnecessary forum posts about COVID or the vaccine…

Users who just post very controversial polls/forum posts just to get a reaction from OzBargainers.

  • +5

Asking investment advice when they start to work at Big4. Get a goddamn high yield investment vehicle. Case closed.

    • +1

There's another one, stupid OzBargain jokes that get beaten to death on every forum post!

  • +9

    Where is the

Incorrect use of advise and advice

    option in the poll?

    • +3

      or lose and loose.

    • +2

      There their they're.

      • +2

        Where wheir whey're?

  • The dumb questions instead of googling, but that is also every facebook group. I have had to leave quite a few facebook groups as I couldn't stand all the stupid questions, why people couldn't work out the simplest thing for themselves. People in a huge panic and angry all because of their own user error/stupidity/refusal to learn or research themselves and blaming the product/company/game/whatever.

  • +4

    Not enough pointless polls
    Cudos 👍

    • Cudos

      It's kudos, oh no wait…

      • Nah, it's Kang and Kodos

  • +3

I hate it when you go to comment on a thread and it has been closed by mods simply because the OP requested it.

  • +2

Mostly people who create a new account, ask poorly phrased question and then ghost without clarifying.

Then the occasional "no one here has provided a decent answer to OPs question" then proceed to provide an useless response.

  • +3

Default title casing and the mod that enforces it.

The fact someone has a trademark but doesn't use it consistently.

  • This sort of post ruins OZ bargain as there is no bargain info in it. Yet another complaint post…..

    • +2

People who complain about people not posting deals, but have not contributed anything useful themselves…

  • +2

Not mentioning the state they live in pertaining to tenancy or driving related queries.

  • +6

Came here for the Jv and OzSlav remarks… disappointed people!

    • +8

      add rektrading in that mix

    • +1

People who bold words that don't need emphasis

    • +4

      its SlavOz

      get your spelling correct please…

i hate wasting my time correcting spelling mistakes…

      ;-)

  • +2

Forum posts created to trap me into spreading hate about my OzBargain family…..Love you guys and girls

Does love heart thing with my hands like a tosser

  • +3

Omg, heaven forbid if some random, bullshit spouting, right wing conspiracy theory nut job should be asked to “provide evidence.” Nope, you’re right, I don’t think anyone should have to provide any evidence and we should just accept anything that anyone types out as “fact”.

What grinds my gears is stupid opinion polls that only reinforce the OP’s bias agenda.

  • +6

    reading rektradings comments

Bitcoin is the way of the future, and the way to win is to quit your job and buy low sell high

People from NSW/Sydney who post a suburb and expect the rest of us in Australia to know what state it is in. Especially in the title of deals and forums. It's OzBargain, not NSWBargain. Add an extra level of aggravation if they don't mention their state in their profile.

    • +4

There is a world outside of Sydney?¿

      • +9

        Yep.. 3rd world

        • +5

Where wages are the same but real estate is cheaper and traffic is better.

          • @Peace Maker: Obviously grass is greener on the other side..sometimes it's just so hard to see past the smog …

    • It's worse on the Facebook page Markdown Addicts Australia, where people don't even tell you where they get their bargains from - only posting pictures of expired food or $2 shoes.
I don't think many of them did well in school because the posts are shocking in grammar too.
It's not hard to post the price, store, suburb, state and postcode it's from but hey. Too hard for most.

  • +8

The ratio of givers vs takers, seems to have shifted.

We need more givers than takers.

  • +2

Nothing ruins it for me. We have some truly artful master trolls (most inadvertent) that genuinely give me such joy

  • +2

People that don't know which AMG to buy, so come here for advice

  • +4

Reps with no understanding of the rules, or who use the site as 'OzAdvertising' rather than promoting genuinely good deals.

  • +4

None of the above. The only thing that comes close to ruining it is when someone negs a deal because it's not worth it to them. Thankfully those get sorted pretty quick.

  • +3

    What Ruins OzBargain for You?

    Posts like this

    • +1

Thanks for commenting all the same.

  • +1

I'd like everyone to have a profile picture up but hey.

  • +6

OPs who disappear into the void after posting their topic and don’t reply to questions or engage in the running commentary.
    .

    • True, that.

    • +7

I feel the pressure to respond.

      • You're succeeding

  • +1

The people who say, 'profile checks out'

  • +2

So many coffee posts. I hide one and another pops up in a few days. Sometimes it seems like the store isn't hidden and I continue to see deals from them.

  • +1

Lack of "New Discussions" on the mobile app. Or am I looking in the wrong place?

  • +16

The number of upvoted posts for cheap junk that will be landfill within days of purchasing. Yet…. who cares is the mantra because this is a bargain site.

    • +3

Or when you comment or neg the post as being plastic crap landfill fodder, there is always the inevitable "If iT iSnT fOr YoU JuSt LeAvE. WhY CoMMeNt?"
