Some of the Aussie retailers charging stupid pricing for 'postage and handling' need to take a page from Amazon.
$8 delivery fee from the USA to AU.

Big plus vote for good deal including delivery.

    • Yeah I bought the 16GB SoDIMMs from Amazon the other day, and Expedited shipping was like $4.

    • +7

Big companies like Amazon get shipping cheaper as they ship so much stuff.

Also shipping in general is cheaper over there.

    • +6

Actually, I'd blame the Aussie couriers esp. Australia Post.

  • Grrr. Warranty. Grrr. :(

    • It's got 2 year warranty. The boxes look exactly the same as the Australian ones but the Serial Number might be different. I have had 2 WD passport 2.5" Drives a 500GB USB2 and a 1TB USB3 neither have had any issues.

      Cheers

      Dave

  • It seems to be a good deal? Anyone know how long it will last?

    • No Idea the prices changed today. The 1TB Went up buy ~$50 and the 2TB went down by ~$100.

    • it has been this price since april 17th so it should stay for a bit.

  • -5

Why not just buy a drive and a USB3 enclosure? Cheaper than this..

    • +2

Oh do please link then. Note that this is a 2.5" drive that doesn't require external power.

    • You can get a WD Bare 1TB 2.5" drive for $132 at MSY, so this is cheap.

    • Show us where you can buy a 2TB 2.5" internal drive anywhere, and we will.

They don't make them bigger than 1TB.

Oooooo nice! I was looking at this HDD last night at JB for $300, I had a look online and found it for $230 and was very tempted. At $208 I can't resist!

    • -1

if you could find one locally for $230, I'd say GO FOR IT, GO F***KING GET IT, NOW NOW NOW, GO GET IT NOW!!!

it's only $22 difference, the warranty would be a lot easier & you support local Australian business.

Last night I was sitting in my lounge and heard a slap and a skidding sound . Went to the front door to see an Australia Post van disappearing out my drive . The noise was my parcel hitting the ground and sliding along the tiles on my porch . $22 doesn't seem like a lot more to me if you can pick it up rather than have it "delivered" by Australia post .

          2 Words: P.O. BOX.

Parcels NEVER get wet, stolen, bent in your mail box, lost, and you can get them a little quicker. I Share one with a mate, costs me $50 a year with our own keys.

    • Yeah nah it was from the US. Sorry I should of specified.

    There's a Seagate 2TB 2.5" drive, for a little less:

    http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/186959/HARD_DRIVE_-EXTERNAL_PORTABLE_DRIVES-_USB_ONLY/Seagate/STAY2000302.asp

    Appears to be bigger though.

  • Is this drive thicker than other Passports?

    • maybe check the dimensions on their website, but I doubt it.

      • +1

If you look at the 3rd and 4th pics they do look thicker, but they didn't give us a side on view.

  • +1

    just ordered one from Amazon….yeeppy

  • Size Specs of the Drive:

    2TB Height 21 mm
    Depth 111 mm
    Width 82.0 mm
    Weight 0.23 kg

    1TB is: Height 19 mm
    Depth 111 mm
    Width 82.0 mm
    Weight 0.194 kg

    • that is the case size, the actual drive inside is 15mm thick

      • Wouldn't it be only 2mm thicker than a 1TB?

  • nice price considering normal prices for 1tbs are usual around $120+

But its a little risky having all 2TB worth of data in one HDD.

    • not bad as a portable video library, I've got a 750gb one I use as that / it's the back up of my media center

    • More like $140+

    • But its a little risky having all 2TB worth of data in one HDD.

Why? Don't you backup your data?

  • Don't like WD as a couple of years ago I lost all my stuff on a WD MyBook. However, will give them another crack. When I purchased said there were 15 left (although they will likely get more). When I checked out there were 13 left? unsure if it means much.

    • +2

ALL DRIVES FAIL, so make sure you have backups

    • +1

FFS not this sob story again.

If the drives fails, it's YOUR fault for not backing up. When will people realise HDD's are disposable products with finite lifespans?

And half the time you can tell it's on it's way out quite clearly by checking the Reallocated Sector Count with an app like HD Tune.

He who laughs last, has the best back-ups.

      • I used to back up everything on dvds, but dvds fail as well, so now im going to have to back up my backups, this could come in handy for that! Also cheers for the HD tune tip.

        • If both your drive and DVD fails, then you have very bad luck.

DVDs shouldn't fail if you just leave them in a spindle and don't use them. Their natural lifespan is quite long.

The more valuable something is, the more backups you should make. People who swear themselves off a brand because of one bad experience are naive. All things fail. You were just unlucky.

        • You have to check the media code of your optical media (the brand is irrelevant as almost none of them manufacture their own discs anymore; sort of like how there are only 4 or 5 LCD panel manufacturers in the world and then they're re-badged as Philips, Panasonic, Samsung, etc).
Chances are you used some cheap CMC Mag media which all end up as coasters after 6 months or so.

Taiyo Yuden & Mitsubishi Chemical Corps are the only DVD+R/CD+R makers you should consider using for archival discs.
In short, if you stick with Verbatim-branded media for DVD+Rs and Sony/TDK for CD+Rs, you should be fine (but nevertheless check the media code with an like Nero DiscSpeed or ImgBurn as even Verbatim/Sony can outsource to sh*tty manufacturers from time to time.)

    Comes to $211 for me

    • Did you pay in AUD or USD? The OP probably paid in USD and then did a conversion on current rate. If you pay in AUD, Amazon takes a cut on the conversion. If you don't, the bank will take a cut but it won't appear on your invoice at amazon.

$208 AUD probably assumed paying in USD.

  • +1

Yes, it is AU$211. Just ordered one

  • Up to $259 now. Was just about to order T_T

  • looks like its done, its at $259 now :(

  • +1

It's 259 as it is no longer sold by Amazon, just check the vendor details. Looks like the ozbargainers have emptied Amazon's warehouse for this.

  • +1

I just marked it as expired, if you missed out, keep watching I'm sure it'll drop again.

BTW, I think it's cheaper to order in USD prices than using Amazon's AUD Price.

    Cheers

    Dave

    P.S.There's a seagate 1.5TB USB3 one for $140 if someone missed out.

  • Amazon seems to be blocking shipping to australia. Are people using mailing proxies to get it sent here?

  • My "My Passport" has arrived from Amazon. No padding in the packaging. Installed the included diagnostic software. The complete check failed. Oops.

  • 2 things I don't like about this drive…

    1) Needs an extra driver installed that does not come with windows as standard. It works without this extra driver but if you don't install it you get errors or prompted every time you plug it in. Makes it awkward when you plug it into other people's PCs.

    2) The internal drive does not have a sata connection. The usb3 is integrated onto the drive itself so the driver issue above can't be fixed by moving it into a different enclosure.
