I'm seeing a lot of zombie apocalypse bargains here lately.

      what is zombie apocalypse ?

      • +3

Don't worry. You're safe. What you don't know, can't hurt you.

      • A hypothetical scenario whereby an apocalypse is brought about by an infection or curse that turns affected humans into zombies - mindless beings whose only ambition is to eat human brains. The scenario would necessitate that uninfected humans arm themselves as best they can in order to survive inevitable attacks by undead or infected aggressors.

There are two kinds of people: those who have zombie apocalypse survival plans, and those who don't. We call the second kind dinner

I purchased a $2 zombie apocalypse survival kit at SuperCheap the other day! :)

For reference: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/69418 - it could save a brain from being eaten one day! Oh, don't forget…keep your cardio up, the fatties get eaten first!!! ;)

At first I wondered what I would do with a speargun but then thought what wouldn't I do with a speargun?

Once you've bought one for yourself, get another for a perfect mother's day present.

If you're the sort of family/workplace that buy an anonymous Kringle gift for Xmas and it fits your budget, this would be the most talked about Kringle gift for years.

I can imagine Chevy Chase (from the Griswald family) getting one and saying "Well then, let's test it out. I mean, what would go wrong?"

  • On a more serious level, is this a decent speargun for a beginner?

    • -1

      isn't every speargunner a beginner?

  • I'm so cheap I've already calculated the benefits of buying a spear gun. It'll save me from having to buy fish at the shops and it'll save me from having to buy fishing tackle and bait.

So in all seriousness, I'd like to know if the 75cm model is accurate and powerful enough for me to hunt salmon, tuna, tailor and trevalley as I plan to enjoy fresh sashimi

    • Get yourself a good handspear first, your dive-buddies will thank me for that advice! ;)

  • hand spears at $30. I'd rather pay an additional $25 or so and get a gun. C'mon stew! I'm on ozbargain for a reason! lol

If you're already reasonably skilled in freediving & spearfishing; yeah, by all means this is a good price & 75cm is a good intermediate size speargun to start with if you're working off the coast…big game in deep water might be a different story! If you're not experienced at all, you could be punching above your weight for a while starting with a gun, which might end up costing you more in the long run. Physics & optics are different underwater, even choosing an appropriate target is a challenge in the beginning, misses or poor shot placement can be costly.

I've been spearfishing for 30+ years, I've used a range of rubber band & pneumatic guns in the past; but I still prefer a handspear. It's stalking skill that gets you the fish, not the spear. My friends are all the same, and we won't dive with someone we don't know really well who uses a gun. Your dive buddies might be braver than us, but I've seen what an errant spear can do to the human body, I don't want a noob with that kind of power floundering around above me in the water!
