decent price for an entry level TT… hopefully it stops people buying the cheap flea market/crossley/Marley garbage :)

  • Knowing nothing about TTs would you recommend a cartridge upgrade or is the supplied one okay?

I have been using one of these for two or so years now with the original cartridge, I have read that an upgrade will improve things slightly but I have had no complaints so far. I'm not an expert but would the money towards a new cartridge not be better spent on just upgrading to a better overall model?

Are you sure you're not using the LP60?

Most of these have a pretty much as good as it gets cartridge and stylus included, so I'd roll with that if you're going with something like this.

These are kind of a set and forget table, replacing the stylus when it's done of course. But no real upgrades and a good entry level setup, but you're probably going to be limited by the other hardware too.

      • I'd save your money towards a new TT which would take advantage of a better cartridge.

It's more than just the cartridge that goes towards good quality sound - the plinth and how it's braced, tonearm, the motor that drives it, the platter…. I'm not too familiar with audio-technica's range of TT's or cartridges especially at this entry level, I suspect that unless you spend a couple hundred on the VM95EN or above it won't make a difference and even then it's limited by the rest of the machine…and that's if your ears would even tell the difference.

  • Hi All, is it better to cop this or the Pro-Ject Primary E? Available at around $350 rn

I would say the Project is a better turntable overall (even though it is their absolute entry level) but note that you will need a separate phono stage (the AT in this post has a built in phono stage from memory so you can plug it straight into speakers).
