  • who can help install it?

    • +9

No need to install it, just leave your door open… it’ll have the same effect.

In all seriousness it’s a fairly easy task and should slot into most existing cutouts.

If you need to pay anyone the $60 saving would be lost and I’d invest in a lock wood.

FWIW I have used the Lockwood T-lock zigbee and pin code lock that’s available for around $109 and it’s great

      • +3

Yeah, I too got Lockwood T-Lock from the last deal and it's been great

        • I’ve got the same, combined with the iM1 module it’s fantastic (if your an Apple drone like unfortunately myself) I can open via my watch verbally, via home app etc, only issue I can’t disable the lock overnight but I’ve additional door security when I’m home.

          • +1

@revmacca: I got a sonoff zigbee usb hub (off a deal here) ,combined with Homebridge to get it into Homekit

        • @ItsBatman I had an older version Lockwood electronic deadbolt. It had a key slot on the outside. The main reason for having it was the wind would blow the door closed and lock us out. One day we came home. They was no flat battery warning on screen but there was not enough power to activate the bolt. The warning came up after using the key. We had a key so there was no problem getting inside.
I can't find a model number on the website linked to the previous deal. What does the manual say to do for emergency access if the T-Lock battery goes flat while the doors is locked?

BTW After the no warning fail, we changed the battery annually (at Easter), recycling the removed battery to a less critical device.

          • @RogerLoger: It has connection points for a 9v battery. Newer models have a usb charger inlet.

I leave a 9v battery in the meter box.

            • @bargaino: @ItsBatman Thank you.

That leaves mechanical failure to deal with (including electronics). The risk of failure is substantially higher than well maintained key lock (or even a not quite so well maintained key lock) but worth it IMO.

              • @RogerLoger: Meh. I can always walk around to the back door.
Apartments with a single point-of-entry/exit have always been a problem for multiple reasons, not least fire safety.

2nd this. $109 on eBay and if you have a screwdriver you can install it (if you have deadlock already).

        • +4

They are still on liquidate-it for about 106$ delivered. It's a rebranded Yale assure which sells for almost $400, very well built and works well with home assistant over ZigBee 👍

Anyone know how susceptible this would be to a neodymium magnet? For the price I'm keen to give it a go

“ Not going to lie this lock probably could be defeated by someone who has a pocket on their singlet or an ashtray on their motorbike.”

    What does this mean?

    • Oh dear…

    • +1

ahhahaha, yeah definitely would not bother as a main lock, rather a garage door entry, or any outside door, im tihnking about it as our laundry is outside, and i wanna do another smart lock for fun.

  • yeah ok, bought it, installed 2 locks already, will not be comparable to the samsung lock, but its for a random room.

    Uses the TTLock App
    TTLock connects to home assistant
    🤔

    • But how? It's a Bluetooth lock not wifi

Quick search on Amazon and found “Schlage Touch Camelot Lock with Flair Lever (Satin Chrome) FE695 CAM 626 FLA” for $50.93, seems to be a bargain! Only this particular colour and Lever style is at this price and everything else seems to be over $130.

    • +1

Good find but I'm not sold on the design . Might suit an older style house?

      Edit -

Read the 1 star reviews. If the lock dies you get locked out and have to break the lock off because there is no backup key

      • +1

Read the reviews after posting, agree Schlage Touch is not ideal for a main door lock. My main door lock is a Schlage Encode (with key) and wifi connectivity, that’s one solid lock! but at a different price point. I was looking for a smart lock for the garage service door and at this price point, it’s a steal (compared to OP). Schlage Century design looks modern, yet not on special.

Possibly the greatest internet comment ever.

i laugh when people talk about how easy it is to defeat a lock, as the last 5 houses i have lived in have had a glass window next to the door which requires a low skill brick attack to defeat.

The magnet defeat that lpl always talks about is usually all in one access control with external feed, e.g. a key pad that has an output for a door strike, not saying a deadbolt is immune but its less likely to have traditional relay. Its worth noting the linked yale/lockwood video above he focuses on how crap the lock itself is as the trend seems to be most 'smart' locks they focus on the features and packaging more then the backup key lock.

I used a yale/lockwood with out a key back up for 3ish years, and changed the battery every 12, it was amazing. We are living in a house that we are going to demolish and i have thrown a cheap tuya keypad & thumprint on the front door, the thumb print is a little hit and miss and i assume the key bypass doesn't offer much resistance but again i am more afraid of smackies with bricks than lpl making a trip down under.

    • Yeah my sentiment exactly. If a crook wants to get in, they will .

Unless you have bars on every door and window, chances are the brick attack will be quick and easy.

I'm probably going to get these locks from Jaycar and hope that good lighting and my visible security cameras and house alarm system will be enough to deter the crooks enough to visit someone else's house instead.

    • Totally right.

Although there are many locks that would be easy to pick for somebody who has the knowledge and the right tools, it's a truism that locks are only there to prtect you from the honest crooks.

Opportunists who want a quick rob or prfessionals who know the lurks will get into most houses - either by stealthy tricks or by smashing windows with bricks.

I wonder if the AU police forces publish records of breakins that were achieved through lock-picking verses other means?

The only place that was burgled where I've lived had a deadlock that was wrenched open by a Stilson. The bite-marks from the wrench around the rim of the lock were a dead giveaway to the detectives who came around to investigate (it was back in the day when they bothered).

    • this is what i tell my wife, i have all this tech in the house to make her feel safe, that feeling is just deterant, if they wnat in your are F@#K'd!

Door frame often fails before lock.
    Kick door > wood frame

  • Got the last one from the Melbourne CBD store

  • I got one and there's another one remaining at Perth Jandakot Store.
