  • Whats the lifespan for this? Especially if you have kids who open and close it often or drop it once a while.

200,000 enough for ten times per day per life.
But it's soft screen: kids like cracking things…

    • +3

My Z Fold 2 is still going strong after almost a year of use. Kept it in a small case and it has survived multiple drops - I've not once worried about its durability both inside and out.

    • +1

Their awful for drops. Cracked outside screen on a Fold 2 myself, never have damaged a phone before.

Always felt I had to baby the phone.

      • +1

I've dropped mine many times from pocket height. The pocket in my shorts tore through and I kept forgetting that day so I kept putting it in my pocket and it kept falling straight to the ground. Nothing broke. The aramid case and spine did get some scratches though.

        • +3

Same. I've dropped both the 2 and 3 and it was fine. It's pretty heavy so you always feel it's going to smash but, thankfully, it's always been fine.

I dropped my 3 from a tall pub stool onto a concrete floor and only had a nick in the corner of it.

      • +1

If you have the original case, it won't. Mine fell out of my pocket (thanks work pants), out of my car —> door step —> ground and only the case cracked/snapped. But the thing is, it falls out of my work pants all the bloody time.

        • +3

I tried using a variety of cases. Anything that protected the outside screen prevented swipes and was horribly bulky.

I was stuck using it naked for months thanks to the odd lack of cases on launch, it slipped out daily just putting shoes on…. Incredibly slippery.

When I did break it, it had a grippy back half case.

My main issue was that I rarely ever opened it so I was just limiting myself to a narrow screen instead. Having said that, that outside screen on the 2 was 100000 times better than the first model which I would have never bought.

      • +1

I've dropped mine several times onto pretty tough surfaces, and it's only scuffed the edges.

      • Drop mine almost weekly on tiles and not even a scratch. The fold 3 was made much more durable than the 2

    • +3

Don't buy your kid an expensive fragile folding phone. Just get a regular phone for them.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/697556

    • i have this and my kids use it all the time , nil issues so far but my fold 2 died becuase of this

    • -1

Second that! Fold 3 is either too narrow or too big

    • +5

I on the other hand like the fold.

Been using Fold 3 since it was launched.

The folded phone is very convenient for calls, msgs etc.
Once you get used to the big screen there is no going back. Wonderful gaming experience as well.

Each person's regular use is different.

    • +2

I came from 13 Pro Max to a Z Flip 3, best thing I've ever done. You can't go back.

And durability is great. I have a 5 and 1 yo. I've dropped it as have they, aramid case no issues.

I don't use it on a construction sites or anything but it has been very robust so far.

    • +2

I write articles on the go for Medium and review spreadsheets for freelance work and make money from it on the go. Not possible on a non folding phone.

    • -2

Samsung staff came to downvote lol - folding things probably are 'the future' but many of us will see them as gimmicks for a while longer because they are more fragile and breaking screens is probably the biggest problem with regular phones. I think all of us will agree if you have all the extra cash required to buy them then you are helping to test and improve the next generation so they can become mainstream ;)

      • folding things probably are 'the future' but many of us will see them as gimmicks for a while longer

So you're agreeing that folding phones are the future then. :)

The mate xs 2 looks like it's much better folding system. Front screen is also the large screen. I hope samsung changes its ways.

    • +2

Yes, but no local stock and no google apps unless you side load with risk of battery life

    • +6

Nah screen on the outside is going to get ESPECIALLY destroyed.

    • The mate xs 2 looks like it's much better folding system. Front screen is also the large screen.

I don't think I would ever get a folding phone where the screen is on the outside until there's a way to protect the soft screen from scratches.

      • Yer it is bit crap but It better then this skinny long screen that's hardly usable.

I wouldn't mind a case for the phone covering that screen that I take off when I want to use it, this would be better over the fold 3.

        • Yer it is bit crap but It better then this skinny long screen that's hardly usable.

To put it into perspective, the outside screen on the Fold 3 is wider and taller than an iPhone 5's screen. I don't think the iPhone 5 screen was considered "hardly usable".

          • @eug: But human eyes and hands have evolved in the last 10 years to require larger screens. Didn't you know?

          • @eug: Lmao iPhone 5. Who remembers or would use something of that size.

            • @Jklaro: Was the iPhone 5 "hardly usable"?

              • @eug: Today yes hardly usable. If I got this I'd probably only use the front screen like 10% of the time.

                • @Jklaro: What changed over the past few years that makes it hardly usable today?

The current iPhone SE is 6mm wider than the Fold 3's front screen. Is 6mm the difference between 30 million sales and "hardly usable"?

                  • +1

@eug: he said if i got this meaning he is not owning yet, just assuming and guessing

  • +7

Been using this for 6 months now and is my favourite phone i've used. Downsides: battery life and it's thick/heavy.

    • agreed , battery life sucks

      • How bad? Like not lasting a day?

        • If you use the inner (big) screen and play movies on it, will probably last 4-5 hours max. If you use the outer (small) screen it will last like a normal Samsung flagship. I haven't actually tested it's max because I'm never far from a charger. Have charges at home, car, office.

          • @Xastros: wow 5 hours straight thats it, very bad

            • @CyberMurning: That's why I wanted to highlight battery life as a negative! Doesn't make much difference for someone like me who is always near a charger but for others it could be a deal breaker.

  • +4

Is an awesome phone, I have had the Fold3 for nearly 5 months now, picked it up for just less than this price from EPP. Love the phone, front screen takes some adjusting but the unfolded experience is excellent. Phone is durable as I have dripped many times using the standard Samsung two piece cover and has had no issues. The phone is a little thick and heavy but easily managed.

    • 100% agree. The Fold3 is awesome.

  • +2

Got this phone recently. Best decision i've made switching to this phone. Regret not getting it earlier!

    • Agree no way I can go back normal phones now.

    • I'm just waiting for an integrated pen!

      • im waiting for triple screens !

  • +2

Heads up - The Fold 4 should be releasing within 3-4 months if you're willing to wait it out

  • I do really like my fold 3 . Do you guys have a slight raise in the inside creases at the top and bottom?

    • +1

Does it look like the screen protector is lifting at the crease? Mine was, I got it replaced for free at a Samsung service centre. Got them to replace the front one too as the oleophobic coating was wearing out.

    • Yes, those are the caps . There are meant to stop letting the dust going inside. It's the improvement they made from gen 1.

I liked my fold, but hadn't to be very careful ask the time is a bummer

  • *saw

    • Noted.

  • +1

So tempted, but I'm sure fold 4 might be around the corner, hence the price.

I can afford a good phone change ever 2yrs so you reckon I wait?

    • +1

If you can wait, then next gen is better choice.

  • +1

Some preliminary info on Fold 4 and Flip 4:

    https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_z_flip4_and_z_fold4_…

  • +1

Love my Fold3 but when shit gets inside the hinge it makes a crunchy noise when opened, which goes away completely after a few opens but is pretty concerning.

That's my biggest concern about longevity with this phone, not how many folds the inner display is rated for. It's not rated for any dust resistance, only water resistance, so you have to take more care that you have zero pocket lint.

    • +1

I've never even thought about checking for pocket lint and have had no problems since day 1.
I don't use it at the beach, but have had it around when I drill holes in wood and gyprock. I haven't heard any noises so far.

  • +2

    $850 per fold

  • How much with the trade in offer few months ago?

    • $1299 minus the trade in value of your phone 5 months ago ($500 off the $2499 MSRP + $700 bonus trade in value)

      • Then we shouldnt buy at this price

  • Someone sent me a message on here saying Frame 2022 65" is 50% off on the EPP is that true?

    • +1

      No, the 2021 is $1349
      2022 is $1949

  • they need to get the aspect ratio right when used in closed/folded form, that and make it less bulky.

  • Beware of buying anything from the Samsung store directly. Takes ages (or never) get delivered. Search their Facebook page to look at the complaints

    • +3

I've ordered over 20 phones and tablets from the Samsung store directly over the past few years. They all arrived on time with the exception of the Tab S8 Ultra which took a month longer than the "Ships by" date which was expected due to the worldwide stock shortages. On the other hand, the S21 arrived a week before the official release date.

However I ordered a fridge which was delayed by a few weeks. I couldn't wait so I cancelled it.

Search their Facebook page to look at the complaints

One needs to keep in mind that people often only go looking for a website to write a comment when they're annoyed. Shipping has been really quick for me for years and it never crossed my mind to go to Samsung's Facebook page just to write a comment saying "The phone I ordered arrived on time", as there's not much to say. You might only be hearing from the few percent who had delivery problems.

      • YMMV but it took 4 months for my TV to arrive so i'm staying away but to each their own

        • same. I created a thread earlier, my phone didn't even arrive. still no refund. and i'm not alone in the complaint.

    • I ordered my flip bespoke edition. Got told 5 weeks. Came in 2.5.

  • +1

+1 for folding phones. Can't go back from this format now (currently have the Fold3). And to think they will only get better from here.. I've not touched my tablet (Tab s7) since buying this phone.. and I was a heavy user of it for meeting notes and consuming media when I didn't want to pull out my laptop.. For me (as each person is different obviously), I can't think of when I'd want to use a tablet anymore (it's either laptop or folding phone for me..). Will likely jump to the Fold4 when it comes out -> hoping the 2nd hand trade-in value on the 3 is decent..

  • thanks man got one

  • Awesome phone. I put a Samsung Aramid case on it and have dropped it a couple of times with no issues except a small scratch on the spine. I never leave it open when it's lying around as I have two small kids who love to destroy expensive things, but other than that it's been a great experience. I think I would struggle to go back to a standard phone after having had this for a few months.
