Apple Macbook 14" 8-Core CPU/14-Core GPU 16GB/512GB for $2697.
I can't see any stock in Officeworks in Melbourne but it's available for order online.

As per previous posts on Ozbargain it's slightly cheaper at Apple AOC.

    What's the discount here?

    • +9

None, its cheaper at Apple Education Store, so its a negative discount

          im a student when i buy from apple ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

isnt it $2769 at edu store?

        • Yep you're right.

        • +4

          $2658.70, $40 less

The biggest difference with buying from Apple directly vs an authorised reseller is that Apple won't replace authorised reseller MacBooks with a new one regardless of how many repairs has been done on it. While Apple Store purchases will have the device replaced generally after 3 repairs.

          Otherwise $40 isn't that big of a deal on a $2700 purchase.

@brosk1s: Sounds like them breaching consumer law for major failures.

Never forget that since late 2020, two or more minor failures constitute a major failure which entitles you to a choice of the following: refund, swap to identical product (if possible), swap for item of similar value or be compensated with money for loss of value.

Have always found that providing exact quotes of the section of ACL law being referred to in written communication gets them to do it, within reason.

@Anthropomorphised: That's why they replace devices bought from the Apple Store (they are the retailer) after enough repair attempts but not authorised resellers (Apple are not the retailer).

ACL applies for the retailer (Officeworks in this example) you bought the product from, not just any retailer of your choosing. You'd have to go to Officeworks if your device needs a 3rd repair and I don't think they'd be willing to upgrade you to the newest model like Apple does if your laptop is not stocked, without a huge fight.

                Just double checking with you.
If you buy from the AOC store (which is technically an EPP store), they should still treat you the same as if you had bought from their online / EDU store.

@brosk1s: Not quite - ACL applies to the retailer/supplier of goods and manufacturer (page 7).

"- Suppliers and manufacturers automatically provide guarantees about certain goods they sell, hire or lease, and services they provide to consumers. These rights exist regardless of any warranty provided by the supplier or manufacturer.
A supplier includes anyone—such as a trader, a retailer or a service provider—who, in trade or commerce, sells, leases or hires goods or services to a consumer.
                - manufacturer includes a person or business that makes or puts goods together, or has their name or brand on the goods. A manufacturer also includes a person who imports goods into Australia, where the maker of the goods
does not have an office in Australia. In these circumstances, the importer bears the responsibilities of the manufacturer for the purposes of the consumer guarantees regime"

I understand that they likely wouldn't do so in the Apple store, but if contacting Apple support they legally must remedy.

I have worked retail for years and am well versed in the literature. Here's the PDF for your reference: Here's the PDF for your reference: https://consumer.gov.au/sites/consumer/files/2016/05/0553FT_…

  • $2658 at AOC edu store

and about the laptop itself, great laptop. I upgraded from the 13" m1 pro to this. Unnecessary jump but the beautiful 120hz display makes the experience so much better. It is chonkier but the ports are nice. IMO the m1 air 13" for 1285$ is still the absolute best value.

    • m1 pro is enough for me tbh, youtube and word processing

      • yep, plenty of power. I can't even tell the performance difference between the 13" pro's base m1 and 14" pro's m1 pro (confusing words!).

        • +2

17-20 ish battery life is also a plus for me. haven't really charge my mac now thesedays.
however the diff in power can make a difference if ur a professional or sth (which im not lol)

FYI - the only three Officeworks with 1 stock left each are:

    • Cairns
    • MacKay
    • Rockhampton

  • Which model in their range is a sweet spot for 4K GoPro video editing in Final cut

    • +4

does your editing produce income/work requirement? —> 14" m1 pro above

if it's just personal use or the occasional edit (once a week, etc) —> no point on splashing $2700 compared to $1300 for the m1 air.

Both will get the job done, one will probably just save you few minutes on your export, the time it takes to go to the kitchen to eat a snack.

The M1 MacBook Air with 16gb of memory will be all you need and more. I’ve got the 8gb version and editing 4k is a breeze and rendering and exporting. Sure it’s faster with the pro but if you’re not making money from it then the Air taking a little while longer isn’t an issue for me. I edit 4K on mine all the time.

      • -1

It hasn’t got a 16” screen so no it doesn’t have everything I need.

    • +2

I bought a second-hand M1 mac mini base model (8GB) late last year for GoPro 4k editing.

Video editing was butter smooth and I had no problem applying colour grading whatsoever. I only paid $735 so it was great value for a hobby.

I'd recommend you look into the Macbook Air if it's just a hobby. Only other comment I'd make is that the M2 Macbook Air will likely launch soon (expected to have 2 extra graphics cores).

  • This is such a good laptop. So powerful and portable and incredible battery life. My M1 Air does all I need and more though so I still haven’t upgraded though.

  • Massive shortages world wide of the 14 & 16”. Apple are quoting shipping times >July for orders. So if you’re considering and your local store has stock, I’d do it.
    14” is a beast of a machine.

For those comparing to the AOC store, these models are pretty delayed on apple, not in stock for weeks at stores or delivery. Office works might have some ready for immediate dispatch making it worth the extra $40

    • Six weeks ago they seemed to have new stock daily in Melbourne's Apple Store.
