    Das ist fantastisch!

This is cool, but not for long distance buses and trains.

I hope to see an ozbargainer post about how they travelled around Germany for 9 Euro by interconnecting local busses and trains.

    • +3

I would gladly read this. Love the roughing it on the cheap stories!

      • +1

Even better if they get a super discounted flight on a budget airline there. Would be a great read actually.

        • +10

Bamboo to Vietnam, Scoot to Singapore, Scoot to Athens, RyanAir to Berlin, and start from there ;)

          • +7

@beatthatflight: Someone needs to do this. Not me though, I’m far to old and into my comforts.

            • +1

@morse: I'll do it and vlog the whole trip if OzBargain sponsors me

          • @beatthatflight: How much does this actually cost roughly?

            • @HecticCrunt: I mean you can get return from SYD to BER from 1190 or so, depending on dates and that's just a normal return flight. Doing it on the cheap hack style would take more investigation

          • +2

@beatthatflight: Scoot fly direct to Berlin from Singapore!

            • +2

@bondiben: I know, but I was actually running the flights earlier and they're a lot more expensive than they used to be. So I'd go to ATH and then get a budget airline like RyanAir up from there.

              • @beatthatflight: Oh wow they have changed - those $999 business class Sydney to Berlin flights are gone - mostly double the price now!

          • +3

@beatthatflight: There are victims of torture who've suffered less than that.

    • +1

You definitely can!! For a backpacker this is perfect. Travel city to city 1-4 hours each trip.

    • +3

not to mention the inevitable delays from DB.

i missed a flight out from Munich (my own fault) and no kidding, the first question asked by the customer service rep: "was the S-bahn late?"

  • +2

is it compatible with nsw metro

  • -4

    Lol.

  • +3

The Rb and re trains often go fairly long distances between major cities. The difference between them and the ic and ice is that they will stop at every town and village along the way.

    • +4

It's definitely possible to travel across Germany with regional trains only. There is even a search function to search for regional train connections only on bahn.de.
RE are regional express trains and stop at less stations than RB.

    • +3

sometimes it's worth a splurge on the IC/ICE trains….their seats are pretty damn nice

    • +1

They are slower and less comfortable, but soccer fans for example usually use them to travel to away games around the country with cheap tickets.

  • +1

Wunderbach! It seems too nice to be true, normally this kind of deals are available for a limited time but, apparently, not in this case; seems like I can buy the ticket for August on the 31st of July. Possible?

    • +2

Wunderbar please. A bach is either a very talented musician (and then in upper case) or a small river…

      • Bach is the former composer, bachab means it is going to waste. (literally downriver)

    • +1

While not all details are known yet. You will be able to buy tickets for each month from May 23 onwards via multiple sales channels. A ticket will be valid for a full calendar month that you need to choose in advance.

    • Yes it’s 9€ a month, and you can buy them for June July and August

  • I would like to post in German but cant find the umlaut key

    • versuchen sie mit google translate :-)

    • +2

Meanwhile in Switzerland 9 euros will pay for a city bus pass for 1 whole day.

    • +7

      Cheaper than NSW!

    • Can Euros be used in Switzerland?

      • -1

Nope swiss francs only. But conversion rate is round about 1 for 1.

      • +2

EVERY single retail place will accept Euros with many giving you the option to receive change in Euros or Francs. Of course tap and go is ever-present but some have a 30Fr pin requirement, others 50 or 100. Pop into Gibraltar and the Pound is enforced like in the UK!

    • Sometimes they sell train day passes for Fr14. Well worth it.

  • Wunderbar. Dank!

    • You got the wunderbar right so better than the guy further up. But it's Danke. Danke.

  • +1

how much would it normally cost

    • +1

Normally it's per trip like it is here. There are other passes for discounts but usually there's no flat rate. And a single trip would mostly be more than this.

    • +1

Up to 90€ depending on city.

  • Excellent heading over in August

  • -1

    Ahh.. IWantThatFlight.. Now !!

  • +1

Paid for by the German tax payer / federal government. Nice to include non citizens/residents.

    • +3

And the general taxpayer will benefit directly and indirectly from the added tourism it will bring to Germany.

    • +1

you can always return the favour by not claiming back the 19% MwSt on goods/souvenirs you bought

    • Does DE still do free university for all? A while back I think they did for anyone, regardless of where they were from.

    • +2

Here's another one with absolutely no understanding of basic economics.

  • Super Spitzenklasse!

    Better than a Schönes-Wochenende!

  • +1

Created an account so I could say Thank You

  • Dann ziehe ich die die klamotten aus und werde ich dir das fleisch von die knochen runterpfeitzen!

Time to bring the leder hosen down from the attic.

  • +3

You can even travel to beautiful Sylt island with this ticket. Just make sure you bring a lot of beer from the mainland because Sylt is expensive. The locals would love to meet some drunk Aussies on their beaches!

  • +1

For a moment I thought there's a new state called Germany.

  • This will come in very handy, spending a month in July staying with meine Schwiegermutter : )

  • +2

Can we use this in Australia now that sky news has declared us little Germany?

  • +3

Also should mention https://www.seat61.com/ for general train travel through Europe. Highly recommended if you're planning a trip through Europe and are going to be using trains. It lists a lot of discounted routes, often it's cheaper to buy ad hoc tickets rather than the EU rail pass.

  • Not giving me the option to buy it??

    • +1

yes same. can't find an actual buy link

    • +1

It's only 6am on the 23rd in Germany. Maybe it will activate at 9am or something? I'll check later

  • Alles Gute!!! Perfect for my upcoming month in Berlin. Thanks OP. Would be nice if it was easy to find the link though ?

  • Purchase link is live, but i think it's overloaded right now.

    • just bought successfully. 7.39am SYD time

  • -1

How do you bloody book after purchasing this pass?? DB is fürken ridiculous 🤯

  • -1

Their fürkin system is idiotic! German ingenuity my aärse! U can’t book a tix from Munich to Stuttgart. One has to split via augsburd

    • you can't use this ticket on IC or ICE trains bear in mind
