wow … even cheaper than HN at the moment.

  • How much is the replacement cartridge?

    • +2

At this cost, it's $38 each for the standard cartridge ;)

      IIRC it's about $50-55

      • +1

So it's actually cheaper to throw out our current HL-2132 and buy a new one, than it is to just buy a replacement cartridge with more toner?? Crazy

        • +2

No, since the starter cartridges only print 500 pages.

        • The starter toner will not yield the same amount of pages as the replacement toner.

        • Low prices aren't Crazy… they're Strategic.

It's a reliable printer, but you'll pay its full RRP price, & then some, after you've bought enough -full- replacement cartridges, ie, if you keep & use it.

But you're right… the cost of a "starter" cartridge is cheaper, if you buy it the box with a HL-2132.

Keep the printer as a spare or maybe donate it to a school, etc.

      • +2

Low prices are not strategic for the company since a lot of people like myself buy generic toner.

        • It's obviously strategic as many companies do it and it seems to work.

        • Not everyone goes and buys compatible/generic. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of average joes who aren't even aware of compatible/generic, when the printer says I need more ink/toner they'll go down to DSE, OW or whatever retailer they bought their printer from and buy ink.

        • It might be 'strategic' but do Ozbargainers (who will make up for a big purchase of the sale) pay full price for genuine toner? If they did it would be a paradox. It's like me buying a cheap computer that uses HEAPS of electricity.

        • +1

In fact the majority of people I know buy original toners (including at my work) because:
          a) they don't know of the existence of generics
          b) they don't trust them or have heard a third hand horror story about generic cartridges,
          c) think that it voids the warranty of the printer, even years after the warranty has actually expired
          d) they can't be bothered buying a new cheap printer because they are not sure how to set it up.

        • +1

I read somewhere that is it actually illegal for printer companies to void our warranties if we use generic ink. I mean, if the companies are smart enough to sell printers just so they could get their money back from the inks people buy. I can't see why we shouldn't outsmart them and not buy their ink, but buy cheaper, generic inks that do the same thing=PRINT on paper.

  • +4

    $35 from MSY

    • +4

      Sure is.
Cool, that makes it $33.25 @ Officeworks after the price match ;)

    • Slightly different model though?
I can only see the 2130 model on the MSY website for $35.

This is the 2132. Not sure what the differences are.

      • +6

That's what I thought when I posted a similar deal until Trance N Dance posted this:

Since the HL-2132 is just the exclusive version of the HL-2130 to prevent pricematching, the cheaper HL-2130s would actually be the deal. The HL-2132 is the HL-2130, just that OW wanted to prevent pricematching and got Brother to give it a different model number just for them.

      • +2

They are all the same HL-2130 & 2132. The different last digit depends on the retailer. I think Dick Smith and HN is 2130 as well. I think it may just give them excuse not to price match - but I'm sure it worked for other in past as they are identical.

(Doh - too slow on my keyboard, beaten by "k" ;)

  • Brother's website suggests 700 pages for the starter cartridge.

  • +2

If you buy the toner from eBay for $32 you can be printing for 1.2 cents per page. Amazing value.

    • Aftermarket, not genuine, right?

      • +1

        Correct

  • +1

I bought some toner for my Brother HL-2240D which cost me $50 on ebay for around 11,000 pages worth in total (enough to refill cartridge 5 times).. While not as good as the original, it does the job and makes printing on the printer really cost effective. I guess we'll see if I get 11,000 pages or so ..

  • +1

Good price, no need for a printer though.

  • +1

does this printer automatically print double sided? or does it need to be refeed into the new paper tray?

    cheers

    • +2

My friend has one and it is non-duplex, needs to be removed from paper output tray and placed back into paper tray.

      • +1

        oh, shame. thx

        • The similar duplex version is the 2270/2272. That's also wireless

    • If its model number ends in "D" (for duplex), it prints on the back by itself, but you need to tell it to print in duplex mode as you print each document (unless, of course, you make Duplex the Default mode… usually, a very wise thing to do).

    • +1

Duplex printing tip: print all odd, reload paper, print all even. Much faster and less fiddly than trying to load the paper into the manual feed slot.

      • +1

If you live in Sydney for $30 extra you can get a Brother (HL-2240D) that automatically prints duplex @ ARC. It yields 700 pages.

        Brother HL-2240D for $67.99 - http://www.arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23710&pid=40972&p=product

        Bought one just today.

You can also get aftermarket (TN-2250) high yield toner cartridge from them for $33ea, which yields 2 600 pages.

So that equates to just over $100 and you get 3c a page, all automatic duplex, which I thought was pretty neat.

  • +1

Good, as it should be! Was shocked when I looked about a month ago, after they'd been so cheap to discover they were back up to $60+

  • +1

Bought the similar HL-2142 for $140 back in 2009, when I was in uni. After 1100 pages printed, it's still going strong. For $40, these printers are a steal. Even with 500 pages printed, additional toner would be cheap as chips.

    • Tape trick?
I tried like crazy to source a secondhand on for those 2140/2142s and ended up paying $30 for one and now I have to get a new drum, hopefully this one off ebay does a decent job. (if it doesn't I will be very tempted to get a genuine drum for $120~ but for the tape trick, I'm sure it'll pay itself off in toner saved)

      • Nah, the printers came with 1500 page toner cartridges back then. The drum should last longer than 2 or 3 toner cartridges, so that printer must've churned through a lot of pages.
I haven't had to try the tape trick myself.

        • Oh right, I read that as 11000 not 1100. And yeah the drum is good for 12,000 pages supposedly. But the used one I've got has done 14000 and apart from a few specs here and there it's actually doing pretty well, and at 3000 pages per toner that I got from the tape trick that's 4 toner's before I have to change the drum.

Just did some maths on which printer to buy.
At $70 a toner price matched at OW to the cheapest on staticice and $120 for the drum that's $400 for 12000 pages.

          With a 2130/2132 that's 12 toners at $50 each making it $600! Turns out I made a smart move!

Shameful destruction to the environment with these Brother Printers.

Buy a more expensive printer and save the environment. Kyocera are pretty good.

    • +4

How are they destructive? They seem to last.

    • +7

I don't get how buying a Kyocera over a Brother is less destructive to the environment…

      • I've known people who buy a Brother for the cartridge (even knowing they're getting a -starter- cartridge).

There's a printer that may either never be used, or may even get tossed… due to the maker's pricing model.

        • I work for a Brother (and other models) dealer/service centre. Brother make, by far, the most reliable printers, so I doubt these would really get "tossed" if a person bought this because they needed a printer.

    • +1

      +1

I paid a heap for a Kyocera before they dropped prices (ie, in new, economy models), but it's been 100% Reliable. KX-FS1010?

(My only regret -was- that I didn't get a '1020D or later '1030D for Duplex… but now, duplex models are much cheaper from same maker.)

My next printer will be a Kyocera -duplex- …but this one just -won't- wear out, so I can move up to Duplex!!! ;-)

    • +1

If you're talking about throwing it away and buying another of the same model because their dirt cheap, you're totally wrong, because the starter toner (700 page) vs buying a high yield regular toner (~2600pages) outweigh the costs.. and there's also a perfectly good drum capable of atleast 12,000 pages included with the printer.

  • -6

These are worthless. Loud, cheap and nasty, very much to be desired print quality, not enough RAM to dahm well print anything at a high enough resolution and they are pretty much as big as possible.

No LAN, Wifi capability, direct printing, scanning, FAX, colour printing, dvd printing or anything decent.

I've thrown mine in the bin where it belongs.

    • +13

it's 40 bucks. it's not designed to print the mona lisa. It's cheap and cheerful - mine is perfect for printing uni notes and the like.

      • +1

…and reliable! These things are like the old VW beetle of printers.

It's also amazing what you can accomplish with a bit of electrical tape in the right place! ;)

        • Isn't that the 2130 toner not 2030

          edit:
nvm it works on the 2030 as well!
Damn it looks like I'm gonna chuck out my HL-2140 and grab this printer instead of a new drum now… But I've got 1.5 unused 2130 toner :(

        • The tape trick works on quite a few Brother models AFAIK! :)

Check ebay for drums, as well as the usual Chinese dropshippers, and don't forget shopbot either…I found an Aussie mob on there once who were doing generic carts & drums cheaper than anyone! ;)

        • +1

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1x-TN-2030-High-2-6K-Toner-Cartri…

Has anyone found a cheaper compatible toner? Not interested in refills.

        • @Trance N Dance: give the unused toner away on Freecycle, I'm sure there'll be lots of takers.

        • I thought so too. But my Brother 2140 has started to play up, even before the initial toner is run out. I think it picks up more than one paper at a time, which in turn causes a jam and the printer to go totally haywire. Don't know what's really wrong with it, but it's not what I'd call reliable anymore. I expected a bit more, even with the cheap price ($99 a couple of years back).

      • That's the cheapest I see. It looks like you sir will be printing at 0.0093076923076923 cents/page excluding paper and electricity. :D

        • +1

Maths wrong but gold star for trying. You're out by a couple of decimal points

        • Maths is correct as I said ONLY ink. So it's 24.20/2600

    • Not up to your standards again, I see. :P

  • +2

Best printer I have ever bought.

  • Do these laser printer toners expire after time? I rarely print and have a cheapo non-laser printer - the ink expires before I print more than just a few pages. Will buy this if it can sit there for a year or two without expiring.

    • +1

tone will never in a million years expire unless you decide to leave it for a super long time in a sauna room….then maybe the toner inside will get a lil damp since moisture will seep into the tiny tiny tiny gap between the cap and the rim of the toner cart thing.

    • +1

I have had an older model of this printer and after more than 5 years on the same toner it still works perfectly

    • I bought a old toner cartridge off eBay (discontinued model, very expensive for new workalike). Still working fine. Makes sense, the toner power is inert stuff that doesn't decay or dry out, not for years anyway. Also they come packed in sealed plastic bags.

  • FYI the starter toner isn't compatible with the tape over the sensor trick, well it isn't on my starter toner i received from officeworks, the starter toner i have doesn't have a transparent window, nor does it respond to any tape wherever the tape is suppose to go on the videos.

    • -3

Depends on the model, some of them you need to do a bit of work with a gear on the side or something; never done it myself, just heard about it! ;)

    • +1

can anyone confirm that the sensor trick wont work on the starter toner ?

  • Just bought one for my little bro! Anyone know where we can buy cheap toners for this printer?

    • according to most of the comments, eBay seems to be the best place for cheap toners.

  • What would be the laser equivalent of this that does colour as well? Just for comparisons sake. Thanks.

Edit: Cheapest colour laser printer is $129 at Officeworks -> Brother HL3040CN Colour LED Printer.

  • Just bought this. Moving from inkjet to laser.

One very very annoying thing is the noise from this. Inkjets are 100% silent when not in use, however this printer and other lasers i presume, have a very noticeable buzzing/humming sound when they are in sleep mode. I doubt i could fall asleep with this noise - i'll probably have to switch it on and off manually which is quite annoying.

    firstworldproblems

    • +1

Something's wrong with yours then, coz all of the laser printers I use are dead-silent in sleep mode…you would think that they were powered off, except that they spin up on demand!

      • +2

It's only noisy when printing and few minutes after (just like grab_ur_freebies) explained.
In fact at all other times when not in use it is 100% silent and uses only 0.6W (measured myself with good quality Power Meter - not the Aldi cheapie). So no need to flick the ON/OFF switch either to save energy. I use mine connected to QNAP NAS print server.

        • Still a bit annoying when it hums for 10 minutes after printing one page.

        • +1

Still a bit annoying when it hums for 10 minutes after printing one page.

I know. Sometimes it's hard to get that tune out of your head too…like an old Boney M song "Brown girl in the ring. Tra la la la la." :p

    • Noise is when unit is in standby before sleeping. I think the standby duration can be adjusted in the driver settings.

      • I'm looking at the 'brother status monitor' and it says "sleep"

I just changed the setting so it would sleep within 2 minutes of use as per:

        http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/as/au/en/faq…

I can clearly hear and feel the cooling fan still going off.

        • +1

Then it's most likely a cooldown period programmed into the units hardware to prevent overheating (I believe laser printers use applied heat to make the toner stick to paper?). From experience, the time before the sound stops being audible on this model varies between 10-15min depending on no. of pages printed.

        • Right you are! It has stopped, Thanks a lot for that.

  • Went to OfficeWorks Glebe this morning, at it was marked at $68. Asked if it was still available for the $39 price, and the sales guy said "no, that was a one-day only offer". So this deal might have expired … or maybe it was just that store?

    • +1

Still advertised as this price on their website…

      • So does this mean I can pricematch officeworks Glebe store against officeworks online (coz it's the same model number!) and get it for pricematch + 5% of the difference = $36.44 ? ;-)

        • Don't think you can pricematch OW against OW, but certainly you have a strong case for asking for the online price. You could argue that you would get this price by ordering online and having it delivered to Glebe so why not sell it on the spot for that price?

        • Worth a try. I've done at Bunnings before, it really depends on who serves you. It took me 2 attempts at Bunnings, but was worth the effort.

    • +4

Did you take it to the counter to be scanned? I have found that at OW, sometimes there is a discrepancy between the marked price on the floor and what actually gets scanned. Once, I found a product that was more expensive than a catalogue from anther retailer, so I went home, got the catalogue and got the sales person to agree to price match. When I then took it to the counter, it scanned at a price lower than the pricematch. Since then I've learnt to scan it first at the desk (provided you can find someone).

  • I believe this is just the right price it should be because every one or two months there is a discount. Sometimes even cheaper. I believe the lowest price was $28 or somewhere near that price.

  • now even cheaper - reduced by a dollar to $37.94 :)

  • Updated price in title.

  • I just got a Fuji Xerox P205B from Officeworks for $48.94 ($11 more - not even on special). It is bloody fantastic: 64MB memory, 24PPM, smaller size. Something definitely to consider if you are willing to spend that little bit extra. Well worth it IMO.
