  • Looks like a good price, and good unit.

Got these as part of a deal late last year or earlier this year. Seems to work well, has gone off once when the steak I was cooking got very smoky so definitely works. I got the interconnectivity and remote, which allows you to silence them all and test them together etc.

Really wanted the NEST system, but was too expensive. This is a good alternative

These are good. Also got them on a previous deal.
Have 1 of the hardwired modes installed and 5 battery ones. “Tested” them when “cooking” steak and all went off, the remote silenced them all as well.

  • Can multiple controllers be connected to the system?

  • Nice, was just researching interconnected 10yr battery smoke alarms so nice timing! Ordered ^_^

FYI I ordered 6x + remote controller and they arrived today. Installed them fine they're ceiling only mount and you can either setup wireless master on one alarm and make everything else slave or setup remote controller as master and all alarms as slave.

I decided to make remote controller as master and alarm as slave because the manual states while slaves can be reset, the master can not be reset.

      • I just received mine.

Just curious where it states the master can't be reset? I can't see it mentioned anywhere.

I plan on making the controller the master like you did.

Also I take it the controller either doesn't ship with a battery or it's flat. Do you know how you open it to check/replace?

I undid the 2 small screws on the back of it but I still can't seem to get it to open.

UPDATE: I missed the part in the instructions telling you to hold the 'silence' button down for 5 seconds to activate it. Still curious how you change the battery though. Will eventually need to figure it out.

I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually

          Non-Removable Lithium 10 Year Battery

          • @OzBragain: The battery in the controller, not the smoke alarm.

It says in the user manual it has a coin battery (CR2450) that will need replacing after3 years.

My remote arrived with flat batteries also. After undoing the screws and prying it open, I realised that a simple twist will make the 2 halves fall away so that you can get access to the battery.

They are hard to source at the moment though!

The holding down the button for 5 seconds step wasn't relevant to mine. I had to put the smoke detector in "search" mode and then hit the silence button on the remote 3 times to get it to pair.

  • Any advantages of wireless interconnectivity for residential with only two smoke alarms?

    • QLD require them to be interconnected. Other states may differ

  • Looking at these just last week. Bought a place late last year that hardly has any (before QLD compliance rules came into effect). Thanks for the post OP.

Perfect timing - our smoke alarms are all due for replacement and I started looking online yesterday at what I should buy.

We currently have 2x 240v hardwired & 3x battery smoke alarms and I'm looking to replace them all with 7x of the 240v hardwired smoke alarms - getting an electrician to do it of course.

    I'm looking to get 7 of these - https://homewatchsecurity.com.au/product/emerald-planet-240-…

Can someone please clarify a couple of things for me.

The link I put to the smoke alarm above states it's "supplied with RF". Is this what interconnects all the smoke alarms to allow you test / silence them together? Looking on the manufacturers website I assume it's this module and it's connected to the underside of the master smoke alarm (in the roof)? https://emeraldplanet.com.au/product/rf-module-vulcan-series…

And if I want to test / silence them all without reaching up to them I need this, the smoke alarm controller? https://emeraldplanet.com.au/product/smoke-alarm-controller/

      1. The RF component simply clips into the back of the each alarm unit to be linked (similar to the battery)

      2. You pair all units to a master/first unit including the remote.

      3. Correct, the remote can be placed within hands reach, say next to the cooktop. I previously ordered this configuration, I couldn't workout how to pair the remote before realizing the battery shipped was already flat and needed replacing 😅

      • Thanks for the info - much appreciated

      • What's involved in accessing / replacing the battery in the controller?

  • Anyone able to say how well they compare against this?

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/quell-240v-mains-photoelectric-l…

    • Battery vs Mains..

      One doesn't require an electrician..

I think that's the biggest difference between these..

Plus these are interconnected between multiple units while the Bunnings unit is standalone.

Cheaper on eBay at $39.95 however the 97.2% feedback rating is a bit iffy.

    • +4

      Hardwired and not interconnectable….

      Big difference!

      • Good point! I saw the 10yr battery and assumed it wasn't hardwired when I'd saved it a couple of weeks ago.

  • Smoke alarm company just charged me $88 each to install these. Ouch

    • If you find the other posts about these units… Others were charged like $150ish (from memory) to get someone to install the 240v …

I bought 7 for different rooms and the garage etc last time…

Decent company to deal with… They were out of stock… but flicked them a message asking if they were going to get more. And when they did, they let me know … Might not seem like much, but thought that was nice follow up..

    • This post is for the battery ones, no electrician needed. Unless you're referring to hardwired?

      • We had to get the smoke alarm certificates so had the expired wired ones changed and extra wireless ones installed, all charged at the same price of 88 each.

        • Also in Qld selling house soon - why was smoke alarm certificate required?

Answer from installation company - may be required on rental properties:
"The real estate may request a "certificate of compliance" from these companies as proof of service. This is not a legal requirement but may be part of the real estate agent's internal process."

  • If only that wireless component was something useful, like Zigbee or WiFi.

  • So I need to replace 4 hardwired smoke detectors. Can I just get one of them hardwired and 3 as wireless ? Trying to save cost on sparky installing 4 Vs 1. Any suggestions?

Go to the companies website and email or call them for info…

Find out direct from the source

Company as in home watch security

@sp297 might be able to advise further

This one from Amazon seems to be cheaper considering $12 postage. Anyone uses one? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B099MN4HZ1/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_Y…

    • -1

It is a standalone unit that doesn't connect with others…

  • Funnily enough, the Mrs mentioned our smoke alarms over the weekend… And the fact that we've never heard a peep from them. (Probably a good thing though.)
    Purchased 3 & 3, plus the controller. 👍

  • can you set these up as a set of battery only alarms or do you need a wired one as a base first ?

    • +1

I'm no expert, but from what I gather, the RF (wireless) signal just operates the same way an interconnect wire between units would.
There is no base unit as such, just a connected group that all get triggered by the one.

    • Although this comment seems to refute my previous one.

  • +1

Just installed… Flat battery in remote was a pain. Especially as coin batteries are now harder to purchase here than what a gun is in the States!
There goes over an hour finding someone that stocked them and racing down to get it!!! 😡
