  • These are Australian stock?

    • Says "Ships from Amazon AU" so I would assume that they are.

Not too bad then, the Air with the M1 is a pretty excellent general-purpose laptop. The lack of I/O is always annoying, but not the end of the world.

I'd personally say if you're looking for a midrange ultra portable and don't mind the limitations of the M1 when it comes to running X86/X64 programs, this is a decent pick.

        • +3

Yeah, I use a Macbook Air (8 core GPU, 16gb RAM, 1TB storage) and easily recommend these to most people.

          • @Jaycastle: Hey, where did you get your 16GB and 1TB version?

            • @hoxyz: You can buy it directly from Apple. Unfortunately, AFAIK the 16GB version was not sold from other retailers, so hard to get a discount.

            • @hoxyz: Bought directly from Apple. I don't think you can get them from other retailers in that spec. Managed to get a 9% discount. Came in around ~$2270 from memory.

Been this price at HN for 4 days.
    512 = $1664

    • Officeworks also have for this price, but a lot are out of stock.

      • same as apple education pricing which seems to be based on the honesty system

which works out the best after gift cards/cashback?

  • +1

Very good laptop for general use. Battery life is excellent (easy 12 hours in most cases).

    • +4

General use - been running an entire business off these things from graphics designing in Adobe Illustrator to editing videos, coding, all sorts.

Great little power unit for what it is!

I have been trying to tell people ever since the M1 Airs came out that they are enough for 99% of people, even the base 8GB model. But I keep getting shouted down by the PC brigade that a fanless, ultralight, 8GB laptop is just not enough to do anything heavier than web/email use. I use a 64GB maxed out 16", yet I don't often see where its actually faster to use every day 99% of the time other than 4K video export times and importing/exporting +200 high res RAW files.

      • Anyone got experience with Lightroom Classic performance on 8GB? I'm finding a LOT of conflicting reports about 8gb being fine or not

Let's hope WWDC does show off the M2 MacBook Air. https://twitter.com/mingchikuo/status/1530849357154914304

    • For anyone who's waiting for the new MacBooks, rumours are that the "M2" this year will be rather disappointing due to the chip shortages and lockdowns in China (i.e. Apple will be re-using a lot of existing chips with higher yields, instead of newer ones). So most likely we can expect only a small improvement over the original M1.

      • +1

Its more like the M1.5 rather than the true M2 ;)

        • +2

A good way of describing it, but would still be a pretty high performing ultraportable.

  • Just sold a year old iPad Pro 12.9 M1 and been tossing up for days between the air and pro 13", or the 14", hard decision. ATM for a 16gb air apple refurb have with 1TB but is $2189, or 14" referb can be had for $2699.
The 13" pro is 10% off on Amazon too 256gb $1709.

    • +1

I had both iPad Pro 12.9 M1 and M1 MacBook Air, to be honest, I felt much comfortable working with M1 MacBook Air with the full MacOS experience. Also, for what I am doing, light browsing, and emails, MacBook Air M1 8GB at 512gb storage does what I need. Sold my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 too.

      • +2

It is absolute bullshit that you're forced to choose between one of the best stylus experiences on the market, or a full-fledged OS. Given that the iPad pro has the same silicone as the Mac, and MacOS can run the same apps as the iPad… but you're still forced to choose between an excellent drawing experience coupled to a so-so mobile OS, or a full-fat OS where the only input is the same trackpad they've had for nearly 20 years.

I get why they do it, they want you to literally buy both devices, but it's still bullshit.

        • It’s just comes to personal preference, in the end I chose m1 MacBook Air. The iPad Pro just sitting there 99% of the time not getting used at all, so why not cash in while I can.

          • @cloudie9: That's the thing, it kinda doesn't. It comes down to Apple's preference and whoever is choosing has to compromise their needs or pay twice.

            • -7

@TheRealCJ: I own both. Doesn’t really bother me at all. There are constraints with everything in life. The easy fix is to either do OT or a part time job temporarily to earn enough to pay for what you want. To complain and do nothing simply marks one out as a loser.

        • -2

I guess thats the reason, more money, they could allow both with a little developement effort, but they dont. Fool the iSheeps into buying both.

          • -4

@John Doh: Lucky I’m not poor enough to have to buy ChinaDroids

            • -1

@Icecold5000: Working your ass off doing extra temporary job and buying 2 stuff instead of one to make a RICH milking US company RICHER is not Lucky, its pure dumb iSheepism! Good luck. And your data is not safe either!

              • -2

@John Doh: My last macbook before purchasing the new 16” pro was an early 2015 Macbook Pro which I still use. If you cannot afford quality stop taking your rage out on those who can.

                • @Icecold5000: Its not like I cannot afford, I use a P30 Pro/iPad myself which in itself a decent phone/tablet. And I never had to buy a MBP, because the companies where I work always provided me one. M1 is an ultimate coding machine - I even appreciate it. But trying to justify buying 2 devices by doing extra jobs and asking others to do the same, else categorising them as losers just to make a milking company rich is iSheepism. And its not me taking a rage. Just read your own statements first. I did not even reply to you in the first place. lol.

                  • -2

@John Doh: I said people who complain without trying to find a solution are losers. Big difference and one which you don’t even understand obviously. The way you whine it sounds like you being forced to buy Apple products because there are no other alternatives. There are many things to get angry about like the Ukraine war but for some reason how other people spend the money they earned which has nothing to do with you makes you blind with rage. How does that work?

                    • @Icecold5000: My point was simple, apple making 2 products to make more money. Its true. MS surface made it happen. Its a tablet, its a full fledged windows machine. And iPad with M1 has more capability than a surface if it wants to run both iPadOS like OS and a macOS, but they are not making it happen.

You are the one who started all this trying to say you are lucky you are not poor, but want to make a company rich by doing extra part time job. Doh! Go figure. And I am not even raging or angry if thats what you are thinking and I am not even whineing. I am not a girl to be bitchy at such simple arguments.

And yes, the war between America(Ukraine) and Russia is still going on. Hope it ends soon. Lots of poor civilians are suffering and dying.

                      • -1

@John Doh: The obvious solution is to buy a MS Surface and strike a blow to the heart of Apple which it will definitely feel. Apple wouldn’t be one of the most valuable companies in the world if it didn’t deliver that people wanted. Is Apple forcing people to spend their money on their products? The ‘milking’ you talk about allows people to spend their money on quality electronics which last a lot more than a Poco POS and provides jobs and incomes for hundreds of thousands of people, maybe even millions. I can’t even comprehend what it would be like to be rage triggered by how other people spend their money.

      • Yeah the iPad was just a big touch screen Tv mostly to me, don't draw etc and tried that MGK expensive pos and hated it, so sold it for good money, only really cost me $200 for a year.
Do you find the air screen bright enough? Think I might get that 8/512GB model to match my 24" iMac, I have near 200GB photos/video.

  • Air 256gb or Pro 256gb? Pro is brighter screen, bigger trackpad, Touch Bar, fan, what else?
I also have a 24" iMac in my home office so is for portability.

    • +3

Air, the touch bar imo is annoying

    • +2

The 13" MBP also has better battery life (bigger battery). For the most part, it's not really worth the extra cost over the MBA though.

  • thx. Helpful comparisons.

  • +3

i know they are M1, but almost 2 years now still the same price?

    • -2

      That's apple for you

    • No 10% off lol

  • Had one of those M1 MBA until end of last year and sold it. Now I need mac again and don’t know whether to take the plunge on this or wait for the possible M2 MBA that could come in a week or so at WWDC.

    • -1

WWDC is for developers won’t be any new hardware. Amazon have 30 day returns anyway.

      • The rumour is M2 MBA. Personally if there is hardware at all I reckon it would be the Mac Pro, seeing as the current one is still Intel.

      • They do often announce hardware at WWDC, although the last few years they haven't. Before 2020 they always announced Mac hardware there.

    • waiting for m2 version

      • +1

You like white border and white keyboard?

  • Might as well buy from Apple direct then

    • why's that?

      • only one $ more via edu site

        • +2

wow, TIL you don't need an edu email for that

    • can you get any cashback or use discounted gift cards buying direct from apple?

      • I think 1.5% cashback
