i miss the days where you can get chromecast for $35

    • +1

Not sure there ever was $35 AUD for one, I think that was the introductory USD price. You can get a 3rd gen model from Officeworks for $47. GCWGTV has come a long way since the first generation Chromecast.

2nd gen Chromecasts have definitely been $35 on sale

It's not the same device though, the remote and apps on the device improve the experience. I replaced my chromecast ultra in the bedroom with one of these last week purely for the convenience of the remote control.

          • @AEKaBeer: Maybe use the phone to change channel and use the existing tv remote to change volume?

That white remote looks pretty primitive? (you want a button for youtube/netflix, or even want a back button but doesnt have up/down/left/right arrows?)

I don't have any 4k content/tv to make this useful

@HK Refugee: But then you're strictly limited to casting media.

The circle is up/down/left/right, the middle is confirm.

The point of this is to add smart functionality to older TVs (or smart TVs that are just too slow), you don't need this if you don't want direct access to YouTube/Netflix/Prime Video etc.

            • @HK Refugee: Using the phone is the reason I switched, the delay gets annoying after a while and it can disconnect forcing me to reconnect. The remote it comes with is actually responsive and feels pretty nice and is less of a drop trap than my shield remote is.

It's like complaining about the Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G price because 7 years ago, you could get Galaxy S4 for $300!

      • I believe that this is actually a fair point. Technology manufacturers (specially CPU & phones) has been incrementing flagship model prices very strategically.
The did it such that older models almost keep their prices at launch of the newer models and inching their way to huge profits margins.

  • If you had to pick, this or the Amazon Fire Stick Max?

    • I've got both, Fire Stick Max is noticeably more powerful, but Google TV has the better user experience. Big difference is Google TV has an Input changer puts it out on top.

      • Have you tried Kodi on both?

      • plus with launcher manager app you can change the launcher with chromecast but cannot with Fire TV as Amazon blocks the app.

I went chromecast for better user experience / compatibility & cast ability even though it's more expensive (I side load)

  • It's an eBay Plus item, but doesn't offer free Express Shipping option. (I'm in Melb inner suburb and have been enjoying free Express shipping)

I saw this occurs on many other ebay plus items. Is this happening to you guys?

  • I have hisense q8 tv and casting is a big problem in that tv. I want to cast videos from iPad and mobile phone to TV. Any recommendation to go with gen2 or 3 Chromecast of amazon fire stick

    • The google TV software is excellent if you have a TV that isn't brilliant in that department. We have an older Sharp TV that now has a new lease of life since adding the chromecast ultra. Regular chromecast is fine if you just need reliable casting.

  • MCPAY10 ($10 off) also works but it has a $80 minimum spend.

Can you power these via USB or does it have to be plugged in?

    • Can you power these via USB or does it have to be plugged in?

If you mean PC or TV USB the answer is NO, not enough power.

      • Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Thanks!

  • Forgive my ignorance. Can you add streaming services such as Britbox?

    • such as Britbox

If app available just download it from appstore if not sideload it.

  • I've still got $7.90 shipping (Melbourne) from Big W ebay. I've not got ebay plus, but the header says it should be delivered free anyway? How do I do that?

    • BIG W have just put a postage cost on the item. It was free postage. Only option for you would be to do a free click and collect order with The Good Guys eBay
