  • It's getting harder and harder to resist upgrading my PC to an m.2 SSD over my SATA one

    • +2

Or keep your sata as your secondary drive and the m.2 as boot 🙂

      • +6

For the sweet 0.2 second faster boot times, oh yes!

        • +4

          Yep.. And extra storage 🙂

    • +1

in high capacity not really. if you want 4tb or higher its still more value in sata ssds than nvme but if your just getting low capacity like 500gb then yeah its cheap.

  • +2

Still waiting for a deal on A2000

    • They had it on sale for $115 with free shipping last month, you must have missed it.

  • Hi guys. new to nvme. i have a surface pro 4 (replacing the screen soon) what is the go to 1tb drive with the dram ( i hear this is the ones to get) tia

    • +7

I probably wouldn't sink money into keeping a Surface Pro 4 running.

      • +1

I’m quite liking this tbh. Picked it up out of the electronics bin at the tip last week. Only cost me a charger so far. Good for easy office on the move.

    • just add a 256GB sd card at the back if you really want storage. Also better off upgrading to newer model.

      • +1

I guess. Was just thinking as the screen is off. Might as well

  • +4

Back in the day I wouldn't have thought hard drives would look like ram sticks.

  • Which enclosure would be good for Kingston NV1 1TB SSD that will match the speed provided i have the correct ports available

    • A cpu case with a motherboard inside.

No external adapter/enclosure will come close to nvme speed

      • +1

This Kingston nv1 is only doing 2100/1700, USB 3.2 gen 2 X 2 enclosure can do close to this speed.

  • Can use this for a PS5?

    • Nope, it needs to be PCI-E Gen 4. Even if it was this drive is very entry level and the PS5 demands a mid-high end M.2.

      • +1

        Thanks

  • Kingston NV1 would go well with the $999 3060 laptop the other week.

  • Kingston NV1 1TB vs Samsumg 970 Evo Plus 1TB. Is it worth spending the extra $$ for Win10 OS?

    • -1

Nope, no realistic difference as a boot drive

      • +1

Not true. NV1 is dramless so less durable and suffers large slowdowns with large writes.
You might be getting it confused with the Kingston A2000 which is TLC with dram. For most users, there would be no difference between an A2000 and Samsung 970 EVO Plus

    • +3

yes Samsung 970 is a much better drive, if you intend to install more than just the OS on it.

not sure what you do but a faster drive for file transfer is always better than a slower one. Not sure if you do video editing or photos editing or anything like that but the faster drive is also a benefit. Games like Rust that rely on drive speed to load faster is also something ot consider.

      • +1

Partition and install couple of OS for dev and programming

    • +2

I would definitely pay more for the 970 EVO plus as a boot drive.

      • no issue with heat in a very slim 1kg laptop ?

        • No idea. I only use a 14" MacBook Pro with an integrated SSD.

  • +1

The Kingston NV1 uses DRAMless SSD controllers like the Phison E13T and Silicon Motion SM2263XT, which are both getting a bit old but are still sufficient to offer a step up from SATA performance. The NAND will tend to be TLC on the smaller capacities and QLC for at least the 2TB model, but realistically Kingston could use either type of NAND on any of the capacities depending on market conditions.

  • Would the kingston nv1 work on the 3060 Lenovo ideapad gaming 3 deal for last month?

    • +1

Yes, I opened it up and there was a 2280 M.2 slot next to the boot drive (which was also a 2280 M.2). I haven't actually tried using it though, but I would assume it would be PCI-e gen 3 x4 although it may be bottlenecked depending on the laptop's bandwidth setup.

  • i have been looking at some motherboard with this 10% off storewide. Below is my observation from this site.
If 10% + delivery = no price jack
If 10% + free delivery = yes price jack

  • Finally a 1TB NVMe under $100 delivered again!

  • Good price for the MX100 SATA!

  • Hundo buck SSD's back on the front page eh. Maybe there is hope for us all yet.

    • Not necessarily the one you want though.

  • Which 1tezza should I buy crucial or Kingston

  • Kingston NV1 to E15 gen 4, what do you think? I heard some bad reviews and crucial p2. Good choice or should I spend more for 970evo+.
Laptop will be used by an elderly for very basic stuff (possibly for 10 years lol)

    • +1

970evo might be too hot in a laptop, I would go for sn570.

    • I did some quick research and the NV1 looks like a decent laptop drive. It seems relatively cool only reaching 40-50C in R/W but it does throttle at 60C in sustained writes. In comparison the Kingston A2000 hits 90C+ and even reports it as lower. Performance wise it depends what you're gonna do with it. Boot drive, gaming, general usage? You won't notice a difference between the NV1 and even the highest end M.2 SSDs. Lastly it does have lower lifespan than mid-high end M.2 drives with 240TBW but I had a quick glance at other low end drives such as the WD SN350 which has just 100TBW. On the other hand the A2000 has 600TBW but I wouldn't feel comfortable putting so much heat into my laptop unless it has great cooling, and even then the drive is going to throttle.

      • thanks for your input, looks like nv1 pretty basic. I think I can justify spending bit more for a more durable one. even the warranty of NV1 3yrs vs A2000 5yrs turned me off a bit. a2000 is pretty old model, but yet more durable? I dont know

        • Nv1 is barebones. Older model doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. Kingston have something that is better than the a2000 though and it’s I believe kc2500? Not really much reason to spend extra though the a2000 is good enough for most people.

          • @ATangk: "Older model doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad" exactly, but if 3 years older "entry" level is better than latest entry model, well i wont gamble for 20 dollars.
I think I'll go with the a2000, laptop is 2 weeks away anyway. I'll see if I can grap a good deal. Thank you!

    • +1

I put this drive in a Lenovo e485 lappy - absolutely fine for normal web browsing + office + plus other general apps. Don't worry about the endurance rating, it's very unlikely that a basic user would write 240TB in 10 years.

The 970evo would be wasted money.

  • I got a Latitude 2290 from a deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/701655
It came with 256GB and Win11 installed. I'd love to upgrade put this Kingston NV1 1TB 2280 SSD in it.
How do I reinstall Win11 after I swap over the SSD? Do I have to buy a new copy of Win11 to install, or can I somehow use the same copy of Win11 that was shipped with this laptop?

    • Reinstalling is a pain in the ass. Recommend to clone the disk using something like Macrium Reflect (Free), that way your new SSD will be an exact copy of the old one without needing to mess around with any drivers/reinstalls, etc.

      • Thanks mate, will it still work even if the drives are a different size

        • +1

Yes, you can choose to just eat up the rest of the space when cloning over. Its only an issue going from larger drive to smaller.

    • +1

You absolutely do not need to buy a new copy of windows. Use the Windows Media Creation Tool which installs a fresh bootable copy of Windows 11 on a USB drive.

Then use this guide to install Windows. Your license key will be preinstalled in your BIOS firmware and will automatically be entered during installation.

  • I think the WD green would be a better deal speed wise for $116.10 total for extra 1.1GB/s faster ssd

  • For MX500 1TB, I bought it from their ebay store, worked out to be a bit cheaper if have ebay plus and discounted gift cards!

  • Thanks for this - bought the MX500 as well. However, I ordered it on Monday and only just got the shipping information (Thursday afternoon). Still hasn't actually been shipped yet. The MX500 was in stock when I ordered it. Should have just bought it off Amazon.
