D-Link DMS-106XT Unmanaged Switch - 1x 10GbE + 5x 2.5GbE - $199 Pickup @ Officeworks

420

6-Port 2.5G Switch

  • 5 x 2.5Gbps Ethernet Ports for high-speed connections such as to your Router or gaming PC
  • 1 x 10Gbps Ethernet port for uplink to a high-speed Server or NAS connection

Local RRP is $399 but it's currently on clearance at Officeworks for half that. Online only, you can just get it delivered to a local OW for free and pick it up from there.

There are some competitive 2.5 GbE routers from QNAP on the market but they have some negative reviews here and there on Amazon. This model has nothing but great reviews that I've seen so far. I bought one and am checking it out now.

My redemption has been approved by D-link!

        • Did you get your switch already?

          • @rainbowyen: yes, received yesterday, have to cut the barcode from the box and taking a photo to upload. Submitted my redemption last night and received the approval email this morning.

Just a warning, that's not a very good router, considering that it cannot route…

Neither are any of the router alternatives suggested in the description links.

I have had many problems with service/warranty with D-Link switches. I wouldn't recommend them at all.

Like having a Raspberry Pi connected is likely the problem. Seriously!!

Damn. Best price I’ve seen so far.
Now to wait for something in a similar tier from UniFi…

  • Have one of these, works just fine. I had some issues listed below initially but turns out I just had a bad cable. Even though cable was cat5e and was passing simple continuity test on all pins. (still wondering what could be wrong with the cable)

    Issues due to bad cable:
    - Turbo mode wouldn't work and it didn't recognize that the cable is connected, regular mode worked fine
    - Speed was capped to 100mbps on the port where the bad cable was connected to

    • Cat 5e cable isn't fast enough for 2.5gb or 10gb…

      • +9

Ehh, part of the reason 2.5 Gb and 5 Gb were made is so you could use them with existing Cat 5e cabling - it's definitely supported. 10 Gb can work over good 5E cabling for shorter distances too.

If the OPs bad cable limited it to 100 mbps it sounds like one of the pairs wasn't connected properly.

        • +3

Cat5e only (officially) supports up to 2.5Gb, 5Gb needs 250MHz rated cable which you'll only find with Cat6 and up. Of course they'll all work to varying degrees at shorter lengths, but 5Gb is a 200MHz signal, and Cat5e is only rated for 100MHz.

      • Had similar problems to you n1x with our NBN. Upgraded to a CAT7 cable and wallah.

        • +1

I had just given up on turbo mode of the switch thinking its a gimmick, bad cable was between router and the switch and I didn't know cable is bad until I had FTTP installed since my PC and my NAS could already transfer data using 2.5gbps rate just fine while my internet speed was below 100mbps anyway (I was on FTTN), with FTTP installed however I could get above 400mbps internet speed on Wifi but only 98mbps on LAN so I realized something is fishy, with different Cat5e I can now get above 900mbps Internet speed. Cat6 or Cat7 wouldn't offer any benefit for me given the distance I'm working with however it might be a good idea for me to replace my cables.

If only we can get at least 1Gbps with NBN (for the majority of users)…

I moved to NZ and we can get 6Gbps here

      • Modern Problems Require Modern Solutions ;)

To bad the cost of computer hardware is even more ludicrous in NZ compared to Australia, even after conversion.

  • I'd love this if it was rackmount

  • OOS anywhere close to Sydney :(

    • It was OOS everywhere except online. You could order it online and ask for it to be delivered to home or a nearby store.

Does seem to be sold out now, even online so the deal has expired.
